re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

A colleague of mine says, according to an auto driver known to him, patronage has increased after the meters were revised, so they actually earn more than they did before!

Trying to stop the Auto wala for some traffic violation I guess. You can see another Cop rushing to his help from the LHS.

He must have been a Soccer player in his childhood

BTW... Looks like few electric meters are not calibrated properly. Here's a snippet from the CCTP FB Page:

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

The new Active(a) trend in Chennai ? After seeing tonnes of white/off-white Scorpios/Innovas/Fortuners plastered with the photos of various political leaders,
I thought nothing could surprise me any more, but was zapped when I saw this latest trend. Later I saw another white Activa with Stalin's picture plastered on it.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Hope that he will not be stopped by cops i guess. But what if he is stopped by party workers demanding money for their evening sip

I wish there is a forward thinking leader who says no to flags in cars and posters in roads. That day the country is moving forward.

Let me add a couple of items. I'm sure others can think of more...

  • Party-flag vehicles bullying other drivers
  • VIP convoys delaying traffic

On a different subject: what is it with 2-wheeler drivers? I've just spent a couple of weeks in Singapore, that land of strict rules, discipline and adherence to law. The traffic moves in lanes, signals and road markings are strictly observed and, apart from the international evil of tailgating, very safe driving is the order of the day ---except for the bikers, who, with the exception of universal helmet wearing and not using the bike as family transport, drive like they are here!

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Noticed a alarming trend in Chennai and down south these days.

Kids of super rich parents, in their late teens or early 20's are gifted with BMW, Mercs, Jags, Audis etc.,

These kids, without any sense of responsibility do very high speeds (250Kmph and upwards), breaching the legal limits on public roads. They take a snap of the speedo and post it on FB to show off, followed by multiple likes and nonsensical comments.

The situation gets worse when they combine all this with Alcohol. Just wish that these kids are disciplined by the parents before some mishap takes place.

They dont have to be super rich. Most of the school kids are riding in geared and non geared motorcycles in school uniform.

Thats simply bad parenting. Lazy and bad to me.

For most of the parents its sheer convenience but the day they lose one of their kid to such an accident is when they wake up but thats too late.

Chennai gets its own minibus fleet. Hope the share Auto menace is controlled to some extent!

Looks like a good initiative - esp the Rs5 min fare sounds reasonable. Regarding menace, once the autos were a menace and we thought the share-autos would help counter them, which they did, but then they inturn became the menace. Hope the mini-bus does not also turn out to be a menace. Would be happy if they atleast don't turn killers on the road in a bid to make money, like the moron private-bus drivers on Kerala roads.

P.S.: BTW, couple decades ago, between the electric-trains (no MRTS then) and the PTC buses, most of the city was covered as far as reach was concerned. Interior roads used to have the mini-buses like the one that plied from Saligramam to Aminjikarai or Loyola College via Anna Nedumpathai Choolaimedu (on which today negotiating a bike/car is a pain).

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

I chatted up the conductor of the Minibus (It carries the name of "Small Bus" at the rear!) as there was not much crowd. Many people were not aware of the service. He said they were inaugurated after 12.00 PM yesterday. There are two routes introduced from Chromepet railway station; one service to Madambakkam via the interiors of Chtlapakam, Raja Kilpakkam etc. Another two services to Medavakkam - one through interiors of Hastinapuram, Tirumalai Nagar etc. and another through radha Nagar, Nemilichery, Nanmangalam.

The bottom line is, wherever they are introduced, for the most part they have to ply through interior/ back roads and areas through which no buses run presently.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

How true!! A little bit of self realization will also help ease the traffic situation in the city apart from saving the precious fuel!

Road quality assessment in Chennai for newly laid roads

I don't understand why should newly laid roads be subject to this test? Has the corporation compromised on the quality of roads laid? Are they gonna re-lay the roads if the road quality doesn't meet the benchmark?

IMO, all this should have happened before the new roads were laid. This postmortem exercise could have been avoided if proper quality checks were in place.

Everything in this city happens in a haphazard manner. Roads are freshly laid and immediately dug up for underground cable/ drainage works. Roads are laid and then quality is checked. Wish the administrators act more responsibly!
