re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

The much awaited pedestrian crossing is finally here:

Quote:
Acceding to the demands of pedestrians in Tambaram, the traffic police have created a pedestrian crossing on Grand Southern Trunk Road.

Pedestrians, especially senior citizens, have been demanding an alternative to the subway to reach the West Tambaram bus terminus from the railway station.

=====

Something really horrific I read on the newspaper today!

A gruesome accident near the light house, Kamarajar Salai, claims 3 lives.

Quote:
A speeding car ran over three persons, including a policeman on duty, near Light House on Kamarajar Salai in the early hours of Saturday.

Police have registered a case against the driver, a college student, and have charged him with drunk driving.

Police have impounded the white sedan that the 21-year-old was driving in its mangled state as evidence. Two other occupants, including his sister, have been booked for abetment to drunk driving.

Although this pedestrian crossing is good for senior citizens, this increases the risk of accidents as we all have seen how many vehicles do noy respect the traffic lights , especially in non peak hours.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Prior to the existence of pedestrian crossing, people used to jump over the median at this spot to reach the other side of the place as the subway there was not usable. It was a nightmare to drive thru' this stretch. Hope this crossing eases the situation a bit.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

The stretch is still a nightmare as those who dont want to use the facility continue to play be drunken monkey climbing all over the median.

And they have also installed traffic lights. Someone did think while doing this i guess.

Regarding the accident killing 3, i want the driver to be charged and punished under homicide and he spends his rest of his life in prison.

Here's something that would make you look for a superlative expletive

^^ I don't think it is for real! They are either bluffing or vandalising someone else's car!

Doesn't seem to be real one. Me thinks its just a 'just-for-laughs' photo.
The match stick is not ignited and the guy wearing blue-shirt looks to be just posing for the cam with the match stick on the cracker.

Just out of curiosity: What would be the result if this was actually real ?

Most probable damage would be to the exterior of the car. Will the car catch fire? Improbable I think

Uncanny coincidence. In 1997-98 I lived in that area and once found a bunch of youngsters who got stuck in their Sierra in soft sand on that beach.

Using my old 4WD Gypsy and a strong rope I helped pull them out!

Really brainless idiots, to mess about in an expensive vehicle in conditions like this especially during the North East monsoon when the seas near Chennai are at their most dangerous. They are clearly untrained in off road work and are not even bothered with having a backup vehicle etc available.

Most of these creatures have far more money than sense.

Seriously!! This trend is fast catching up in chennai.

Rich Parents + Irresponsible young kids + High powered cars, has become a common sight on the city roads. They have zero knowledge about the machines they drive and care a damn about the fellow road users.

Just wondering how the fishermen folks pulled the 2 tonne monster by just using ropes and cables.

The owner of the car should be really grateful to the fishermen folks for risking their lives to salvage the car.

Chennai roads are becoming increasingly unsafe.

This accident took place today morning near IIT Madras. Very unfortunate. RIP.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

^^^ Sorry to hear about the sad loss of life. Biking is not safe anymore as I learnt. Have been using a friend's bike in Chennai for the last week or so after 3 years (after selling my 1995 CD100 in 2010) and it has been a revelation.

It was really scary to ride on our roads, to say the least - inspite of my sticking to 40-45 kmph max and staying on the left-most lane. The ride was between Sholinganallur (OMR) and Choolaimedu and it seemed like MTC/staff/college buses have only a 1-point agenda of running down bikers (and bullying cars), while cars are all around you. I assumed that staying on the left-most lane would be safe, but no, your local hero in his Fortuner wants to circle round you from left where there is no road (trying out the Alltime 4WD?) and then come in front of you, almost running over your front tyre in the process.

Today reverted back to my Baleno and it feels like I am ensconced in the safety of an armoured battle tank.
