Choolaimedu had no signs of rains! It remained dry despite heavy downpour.
Gill nagar was okayish, Gandhi road & Sivananda Salai got hit BAD! I was stuck there with water entering the ground floor of my apartment & had to wade through thigh deep water to get out of my street!

As this latest calamity is hopefully slowing down, what we really need to understand and appreciate is just how much havoc the elements, esp. water can cause if left unchecked.

We've had flooding somewhere or the other on a regular basis, but severity levels seem to be getting worse as the years go by, while the administration does little more than make empty claims of being 'prepared' each time, then get caught unawares when nature strikes. I don't blame them entirely either, they probably don't have the know-how required to protect entire cities or larger areas from such calamities at all, even if they wanted to.

We need to plan our cities better, and most importantly be active participants of the process rather than being mute spectators on the pretext of "I've paid my taxes, let the administration do their jobs", which they've repeatedly demonstrated themselves unwilling to, or incapable of, probably both. See Bombay for one example, is the city any better prepared if events of a decade ago recur? Look at the Uttarakhand disaster for a more extreme example, from what's apparent on the ground, the same mistakes are being repeated again.

I have friends, family and colleagues who have lost a lot (thankfully not their lives) in the ongoing Chennai deluge, and I draw no satisfaction from being safe myself for now, knowing full well my own city will probably fare no better if something similar occurs. Heck, just the knock-on effect of what hit Chennai threw public life and traffic out of gear for a couple weeks here.

We'll have to learn to live with the elements and respect them, because if it comes down to it, it's not even a contest, and sooner we learn our lessons, the less painful it'll be.

My thoughts are with everyone in Chennai, stay strong folks and ask for help, whenever you need. T-BHP is a community, and everyone will surely be glad to assist however they best can. To everyone already on the ground volunteering their time and effort to help fellow citizens, RESPECT.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Dear Friends,

My In laws car Alto and Scooty Pep got fully submerged in the floods. It has not been started yet. They had to leave it as such and go to a relatives place. The exhaust pipes were not closed and he was not aware of the process too.

Things are normal in his place now and he is planning to go back to his house (T Nagar). I have asked him, not to start any of the vehicles until I get back.

Please help us with next steps. Thanks

That's sad. Would be an expensive affair or a total write-off.

We have a live thread on the subject with pointers on the suggested steps:

Sorry to hear the news! Good that it has not be cranked, call up the insurance guys to have a look and also inform your service center before you even move the vehicles out. if it is fully submerged it might declared total loss, anyways get the opinions from Insurance and service center guys

The insurance industry is usually well-prepared for natural disasters and consequential burst in claims:

A recent forward:

Anyone coming towards Adyar, Besantnagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Tidel Park, OMR from Mount Road, Teynampet, T.Nagar.... please avoid Kotturpuram bridge. Vehicles are being diverted as the bridge has developed cracks.

This is pure BS. I went on the bridge today.

If you cannot verify that these are facts, please do not post them.

Are you sure that you are talking about the bridge that is near Anna Library in Kotturpuram?

I was crossing the Cancer Institute bridge today morning and saw that the traffic was being diverted and no vehicles were seen plying towards kotturpuram from guindy.

Yup. I passed through it in the morning. Kotturpuram is one way from nandanam to IIT.

I will have to pass through it tomorrow again during my commute - I will update the status here.
