How about RC, does the same rule apply? Insisting on original?

One of my cars has a paper RC so I prefer to keep it neatly in a file at home rather than in my car glove compartment.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Extortion season has begun.
I was stopped in front of my office randomly, asked to show documents. I had original DL and RC, but insurance was a copy. Cop insisted that i had to have original Insurance papers, and threatened to seize DL and RC. Then asked for money and asked me to leave without any sort of receipt.

My understanding is that
1. cops can't ask for documents randomly, only if stopped for specific offences
2. Only a certain rank and above can ask
3. Insurance original is not needed, copy is sufficient.
I have been stopped plenty for specific offences, and have been given a receipt every time. First time something like this has happened. Governance seems to be be on the wane.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

They are drilling to lay cables near my home. This Apollo A400 machine makes quite a bit of noise. It needs a support retinue - water lorry, a tractor to power the pneumatic drill for pilot hole and a multiwheel truck to carry the unit.
This directional drilling machine weighs nearly 9 tons and can insert a 10 feet pipe at a time.
I was curious to see this machine and searched online to know about this machine.

Coach, on the wrong side of the Chamiers Rd/Senotaph Road flyover this evening. It looked as if it had come from the river end and mounted the flyover facing oncoming traffic.

How? What happened? Anybody know?

Fantastic rains!

Glad I had to go out this morning and not later.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

As usual, rains have stopped post announcing leaves for School/Colleges. Wonder when this tradition would be broken.

On a serious note, believe Chennai is not yet ready for another flood. Roads are all shambles with recent digging one followed by another. When will the administration (if exists) wake up?

Question- Are you a parent ?
Would you rather have your kid go to school with risk of them getting struck there or have them stay home ?
No offence, but I do hope the tradition continues and administration always err's on side of caution.

Yes, but I wont wait for a formal announcement to be made for not sending my son to school. Infact, he bunked his classes for a light drizzle yesterday.

Chennai needs rain (not flood), to replenish the ground water and hence my first sentence on above post.

Ok. I stand corrected in my judgement.

Meeting so many parents who think sending their kids to school everyday is mission critical and they think if school doesn't function for a day their kid's career is at peril. Irritating...

Apologize for placing you in that category. Timing of ur post triggered something... 😀

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

I was nearly front ended by a tata minivan yesteday.
The roads were waterlogged, and it was pretty dark with low visibility because of hte heavy rains even at 5 30, so i was driving with pure engine braking level speeds.
This guy tried to overtake me from the left, and then aquaplaned, with him turning almost 360. his front came around and almost hit me in front! Thankfully was going slowly so escaped. Two bikers on the left side got struck down by his rear end!

Drive safe. make sure you have new wipers, good tyres, and make good use of engine braking

December 2015 was a wake-up call. Nobody woke up.

Nobody ever wakes up, this is India :(

I am concerned since my child is in SRM University Kattankulathur, and they went through a horror in 2015, when Chennai was totally cut-off from the rest of South, including roads and mobile communication.

Its been 2 years now there are no changes whatsoever. Roads not laid, and even laid ones give up in a month.

Proper administration is the need of hour, but people at the top are still fighting for the leaves

OT: Read a meme yesterday which translates to - Last week i was fined for a small pool of water in front of my house (Dengue effect), but now Chennai itself is waterlogged. Whom to fine?

2015 was an exceptional year. 1 low pressure system + 3 weeks of monsoon rain already in surplus + 380 mm on 1st December alone.

Apart from Monday's downpour, its been a start-stop rain from yesterday. For now I'd not worry, just wait and watch how things pan out.
