Road caves in at Chennai (Madhya Kailash junction)

Quote:
A large crater appeared on the road at the busy Madhya Kailash junction in Chennai on Thursday morning. While traffic police officials barricaded the spot, vehicular movement is slow as a result of the crater.

According to reports, the sinkhole, which is around six-feet deep, appeared at the tri-junction of Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and Sardar Patel Road in the early hours of Thursday.

Officials say the road caved-in due to the impact of the underground drainage works that were being carried out close to the sinkhole.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Why do some of the local buses have the colorful lighting around the boundaries? This used to be common on the intercity buses within the state in the past, especially the overnight ones to Trichy, Madurai and so. But now the city has a lot of them; across slow, express and other options.

The stretch between the Burkit Road signal till Anna Salai has been opened for traffic. One can go straight towards Chamiers road at the Nandanam signal. Consequently, one does not have to take detour via Burkit road, Mooparappan street to get to the Nandanam signal. This was long overdue after the Metro work was complete at the Nandanam area.

Is this the Venkatnarayana Road that leads to Nandanam signal directly?

Yes, that's the one. It was closed while the metro work was going on.

Darn! You beat me to it Looks like there's very less awareness, most were going through Mooparappan Street anyway. Its not open from Chamiers Road side towards VN Road though.

Every night that stretch is closed both ways for the Phase 2 metro work. Saw it every night in July while returning home.

Had been waiting for long to have it open.
Yes, too get from Chamiers road, one has to go up to the Nexa showroom.

Yes, Google maps still suggests the detour. I have sent in a correction to Google maps. Hopefully it should effect the change soon.

Can one turn right onto Anna Salai from Cenotaph Road (again) yet?

No. That right isn't open. It is still a forced left from Cenatoph road onto Anna Salai.

It was open for a week and closed again. Caused more jams than solve any.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

All these rains in Chennai have turned the broader medians in the city's roads lush and green with grass and shrubs. Cows are attracted to this space and frequently dart to and fro across the roads. In just 40 Km from Chenglepet to Tambaram, I saw 3 separate instances where darting cows nearly caused massive highway pileups. I'll be damned if these unusually high bovine activities haven't taken some human lives by now.

IMO that section of KB Dasan road and Cenotaph road is one big mess! I try to avoid it whenever possible.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

This picture shows a "no right turn" with a signal that permits a right turn at this T-Junction. This is the Bharathidasan Road - Anna salai T-Junction. The "no right turn" was in effect when the Teynampet metro work was in progress. However, after it was complete, the" no right turn" sign board remains. It may give the cops an opportunity to penalize at their convenience.

re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Hi All,

I plan to park my car in metro station at Chennai airport for a day and pick it up next day (approximately 28 Hrs) and wanted to know if Chennai airport metro station has covered parking or not. Or should I use directly airport parking which has only open parking. Would prefer covered parking.

Airport Parking : 600 (for 24 Hrs - 300 and anything above it full day charge)
Metro Parking: 700 for 24 Hrs and beyond

Share me any details if possible.
