Re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

Has everybody noticed that our LED traffic signals are being replaced yet again, and that the red lights are now heart shaped?

I fondly remember the old ones that had the word "Relax" on them. Unless I'm really on the way to a train or a plane, I think that is by far the best thing to do at a red light. Gear in neutral, handbrake on, and relax!

Haha looks like it has been implemented at a lot of signals? Here’s one near Ramapuram:

Noticed them in all the signals from Anna Nagar to Redhills, cute little ones arent they

This could be part of MGM healthcare campaign, as per reddit;

Aha! Good detective work! It may not be permanent, then. Seeing the photo, I guess it is just a mask over the existing signal light, not a new light at all.

Technically, it might be a bad idea: cutting down the light output of the most important signal we have!

Actually no, it's not by MGM. It's done by the cops as part of the Zero Accident day initiative.

Light output will be hundred times better if they remove the old traffic light posts which hinder the new ones in many places. TBH, it does feel a bit calming to see the heart which was not something I expected.

Re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

I somehow overlooked this thread.

As everyone knows, many traffic signals on major arterial roads have been changed to allow for free U-turns to prevent traffic congestion. This has proven to be quite effective in several areas, particularly between Teynampet and Saidapet, where the road is wider.

The stretch between Teynampet and Saidapet has become considerably quicker, (due to free U turns) and a flyover plan initiated in 2010 has now been put into action. In this context, sent an email (which I occasionally do) to the all the depts , arguing that the current U-turn system is effective and there's no need for a flyover. Assumed this would go unnoticed, but unexpectedly, received a reply from the Traffic Inspector (J1) in Saidapet, whom I know, requesting a face-to-face meeting for clarification. During our conversation, explained that the flyover wouldn't be beneficial and that the existing U-turn was adequate for managing traffic. He responded by stating, "sir, it is the government's decision and we cannot influence it. The purpose of the meeting was simply to gather your opinions.". I told him, the life is going to be miserable for another 2 - 3 years for motorists and benefit is going to be limited".

Last year, suggested an improved traffic plan for Chennai Central station and shared few ideas with the relevant departments, including the Railways. Received a response and had a meeting with few officers at the Pookadai traffic. As anticipated, they indicated that the proposal was agreeable, but it would require acquiring land from Southern Railways, and recommended that I communicate with the SR representatives.

The city is currently witnessing numerous high-rise developments. Trucks, (concrete mixers, debris collectors) leave the sites with muddy tires. Asked the concerned authorities, suggesting that they advise construction companies to wash the tyres at the workspot to prevent wet debris from falling on the roads, which poses a danger to drivers and pedestrians. So far no action taken .

These matters provide individual contentment but yield little benefit for the society .

Chennai hosted South Asia's 1st formula 4 Racing on 31st August 2024.

[Mods: Please move this to wherever appropriate]
I am surprised that I can't find any mention of this event here or I have missed it. They didn't publicize this seminal event earlier. The people who saw this firsthand spoke highly about this - especially the roar of the engines bringing on goose pimples.

The Chess Olympiad was well promoted from the beginning while this event hardly made it to the headlines.

I was somewhat taken aback to notice this on the OMR when entering from Madhya Kailash. The U-turn ROB is entirely out of alignment and ends up in the left lane of the OMR. What process did the highway department follow to obtain safety approval for this ?

Yes, there is no slip road for smooth and safe merge . Additionally, it impacts drivers in the left lane, who must cautiously move to the right if they fail to see the bridge blocking their lane. There is also a larger pillar built in the left lane of OMR (with the accompanying photo omitted), and such structures pose significant hazards.

PS: I meant Road Over Bridge as Flyover here.

Re: Traffic and life on the roads in Chennai

What is "ROB?"

But I think I know where you mean. Even though I live close to it, I try to avoid OMR in recent years. It has become as bas as the Airport road.

I haven't really looked. Do you mean it comes down on to OMR without any joining lane or slip road? That sounds crazy indeed.

Monsoon approaches, and there is supposed to be no road digging. Does that stop anyone?

Around here, they are digging big holes and burying these:

But... What are they? Storm drain? Sewage (there aren't any sewers here yet)? Or what?

Looks like it is for the Rain water harvesting. GCC installs about 6 ft deep pit with concrete rings in residential areas.

Hmmm... Yes, it does! Thank you.

But I don't think they will do much good here. The ground is waterlogged just a couple of feet below the surface. I was hoping that they would be installing a main sewage system. People here either have their own tanks or it goes to the storm drain and then adds to the stink of the nearby Buckingham Canal

Is anyone planning to attend the airshow on Sunday? How do we get to the loop road parking from Guindy?
