A group of students of SRM Univ. Tamil Nadu are setting out on a trip to cover the GQ (Chennai-Kolkata-Delhi-Mumbai) in 72 hours. They are using a Honda CRV 2.0.

72 hours? Hmm..they needs to keep on driving for 3 days continuously. Not sure about will they be able to make it? Anyways, all the best for them.

May be, they should let take SRM Volvo instead! (I believe SRM University is in the same group as SRM Transports?) I've seen them attain 120kmph+ in Chennai- Trivandrum route!

(One of the better services operating in that route though!)

These high-speed cross- country runs are getting rather popular!

If you do a non-stopper (with relays), you can do it this way:
Bombay-Delhi, 18 hrs
Delhi-Calcutta, 20 hrs
Calcutta-Madras, 20 hrs
Madras-Bombay, 18 hrs
or 76 hours, they will have to drive hard to save those 4 hours

Total length of GQ is about 5800 kms. To do it in 72 hrs, they need to maintain avg speed of 80kmph.

Add to the points mentioned by phamilyman, encouraging/supporting an effort that involves breaking the speed limit of the roads and hence putting these students and other road users at risk.

Certainly not appreciated!

+1!! To sensitize people on global warming on a gas guzzling SUV? I wonder who the VC is trying to fool. Possibly NDTV who published this news, who are fools anyway. They can as well say they target the record and if they achieve it, bravo, else, well tried atleast.

BTW, to maintain an average speed of 80kmph one has to drive constantly at 120-130 kmph because one needs to account for breaks, slow downs, jams etc..

I dont think stunts like these should be entertained. Driving 5800kms at an average of 80kmph on public roads in not a joke.

Everytime they halt they will have to hit pretty high speeds to makeup for lost time.

apparently breaking the speed limit is a sport now

To sensitise people about global warming they should ride cycles not drive an air conditioned CRV!

I think this is one of the best timings a well experienced driver like HVK can do on a very long stretch.

Trying to get a better timing is risking their and other's lives as we don't know how experienced they are.

If the intention of this trip is to to sensitise the public about issues such as terrorism, global warming, corruption and pollution, they should go for a road show; not a flying show.

this is what comes in my mind when i heard about 5800km run against global warming and bla..bla.As correctly pointed out in an earlier post ,they should take cycles for this not suv.Any way if they are trying to break that 75hrs record then it sounds ok because India is a democratic country so each and every man can break the speed limit

These guys will have to break a LOT of speed limits if they have any chance of making their target. And they advertise that fact?

I do not know which is sadder
- that the college is supporting them in this
- that the police will let them do this knowing fully well they will be breaking atleast 1 traffic rule (overspeeding)
- that they have announced this with the confidence that the law will not haul them up
- that this nonsense is being attempted in the name of sensitising the public about issues such as terrorism, global warming, corruption and pollution - on a fuel guzzling machine at that.

Just a bunch of people on a joy ride and getting sponsorship and PR too.

They will supposedly be getting help from the highway patrol vehicles and police vehicles , and there is also going to be a pilot vehicle(s) going a few hours ahead of them, in order to warn them of traffic jams/road blocks etc. This may help, i guess.

Yes, what could be argued is why the authorities are supporting this speeding - where the counter argument could be that the authorities will ensure the speeding is done under a controlled environment.

And so I ramble along .. don't bother, let the discussion continue. Was just thinking aloud !
