re: Bangalore Elevated Tollway

I was waiting at toll gate to pay the toll today around noon...bang!! one Suzuki dezire rear ended my Spark.

Result: Dislocated rear bumper hope there is no major damage

Dezir was driven by a lady who was not even wearing seat belt.

CAREFUL IF YOU SEE THIS DEZIRE IN YOUR REAR VIEW MIRROR

re: Bangalore Elevated Tollway

Due to the BMTC strike on Thursday and Friday, I noticed a lot of non-regular people driving on the elevated road.

Also, a lot of non-regular private cabbies were operating on the elevated road.

All these factors led to several accidents on the BETL in the last 2 days, apart from the usual breakdowns.

The weirdest thing happened yesterday morning. I saw a BETL rescue vehicle, which itself had broken down on BETL, obstructing one lane. I was driving, hence couldn't take a photo.

I wonder if they sent another rescue vehicle to rescue the first rescue vehicle which had broken down on BETL.

re: Bangalore Elevated Tollway

When coming towards EC on the fly-over in the afternoon (around 1:30) I saw a huge column of smoke from the left side. It was crazy when everyone stopped around there to have a look! I don't know what it is with us to watch a spectacle like that - forgetting everything else. Traffic was blocked and even buses were slowing down to watch what was going on!

Anyone know what happened?

re: Bangalore Elevated Tollway

The berger paints warehouse seems to have been burnt. I drove past it. Not sure about the casualties because of fire, but there was a good chance of curious onlookers causing road causalities. People who live nearby seems to feel they were supermen/wonderwomen running to nearby terraces and taking snaps from cell phone. If some kind of explosion took place they would definitely have been in the casualty list. The fire engine was behind me for a while on the road. No one seemed to give it way. The BETL folks and cops themselves seemed to be causing more confusion rather than making way for the engine.

re: Bangalore Elevated Tollway

There was a huge queue on the electronic city toll(Exit towards hosur) this morning at 7:00 AM. Is this normal for so early in the morning?

I guess the traffic is of this scale more due to the fact that today is the beginning of another long weekend - a good proportion of people would be heading out of Bangalore today.

re: Bangalore Elevated Tollway

I was stuck in that queue, it was not a regular traffic block, either the main exit booths on Hosur road were not working or some mishap, as the BETL guys started moving vehicles towards Phase-II exit well before the queue reached the trisection point, and at phase-II exit it was real blunder as those who were diverted, mostly unaware that it had only one normal exit, started queuing up in 3 lanes and only at the collection point they came to know the side lanes were for OBU and bikes, I reached the trisection point at 7:03am, and was out of toll booth at 7:57

re: Bangalore Elevated Tollway

I always feel that if we are made to wait at the toll for more than a certain amount of time then the toll amount should be waived off (OR) a status of the queue should be displayed at the entry point. Even OBU is not going to help in this kind of traffic. What is the point in waiting for 45-60mins to pay toll for a 10mins drive?!

True! You don't end up saving time in the end - which is why a TOLL road is there in the first place! But try implementing this and we'll have to wait for our kids to get this waiver!

re: Bangalore Elevated Tollway

Accident on the BETL (towards Hosur) backed up traffic on both sides!! last night. Not sure why the lanes were blocked on the lane towards Silk Board - probably due to rubber neckers. We were forced to take the road "downstairs".

This could be the reason, Bus(SRM travels, Bangalore-Trivandrum) slams median on Hosur Road expressway, leans over parapet. The electric pole crashed on to Hosur Road 56 ft below and hit motorcycle rider who was injured. The driver was speeding to avoid traffic in Trivandrum(Probably the Nagercoil - Trivandrum stretch)

BANGALORE: About 24 passengers and the three-member crew of private bus had a miraculous escape after the vehicle rammed an electric pole on the Hosur Road Elevated Expressway around 9pm Tuesday. It careened along the parapet wall before grinding to a halt, dangerously leaning over the flyover.

The electric pole crashed on to Hosur Road 56 ft below and hit motorcycle rider Varadaraju Suresh who was going with his wife. He suffered a shoulder injury and his condition is said to be stable.

The passengers escaped with minor bruises. The SRM Agency bus was headed to Thiruvananthapuram from Bangalore. "There were 24 passengers, two drivers and one cleaner in the bus. It was being driven at high speed. On reaching Phase II of the flyover, the bus swung to the right," traffic police said.

The driver struggled to control the bus which rammed the median and tilted to the left. "The bus knocked down an electric pole before resting on the parapet. Luckily, the wall withstood the collision and prevented the bus from toppling over," a senior traffic police officer said.

SN Srinivas, a cable TV businessman from Chennakeshava Car, told TOI: "I was driving my Hyundai Verna behind the bus. Suddenly, the bus swerved to the right, hit the median and rammed the left parapet before leaning over the flyover. I stopped the car, ran to the bus, smashed the front glass and pulled passengers out," he said.

Srinivas said he'd been following the bus for over 3 km and it was being driven rashly. The driver even overtook a BMTC bus from the left, minutes before the accident, he added.

As the bus was leaning on the side doors, rescuers had a tough time getting passengers out. Passersby had to use pots placed on the median to smash the windowpanes and extricating passengers.

Driver Shiju told police he was speeding as he was behind schedule. "We're supposed to reach Thiruvananthapuram before 4.30am to avoid a huge traffic jam," he said. Police subjected Shiju to a breathalyzer test for alcohol level and it was negative.

Speed the bane on tallest flyover

The expressway is the tallest flyover in the city -- it's 56 feet from the ground and passes over another flyover of the NICE peripheral ring road. Over 20,000 four-wheelers and 5,000 two-wheelers use it daily.

Overspeeding is the bane here. Less than a week after it was inaugurated in 2010, a car and a two-wheeler hit the median on the same day. No one was injured in the two accidents which took place within minutes of each other. Another accident was reported in 2011. Luckily, there haven't been any fatalities so far.

That was the reason and heard that the motorcyclist died of injuries.
