Firstly Congratulations to TBHP and its members on its 6th Birthday.Wish TBHP in its endeavour to educate,inform,share,entertain and enlighten on everything about Automobiles and everything else around it!:thumbs up

Its a birthday for some and a bad day for others.
The latter one came about yesterday to a young uneducated drunkard who was trying to cross the road on a hot dry afternoon in Hyderabad.

Place and Time: Kukatpally Housing board,1300 hrs.
The Scene: Just before the left turn at KPHB Kaman on the Ameerpet - KPHB road,exactly opp.Swagath hotel (which is on the right side of road).
The car : Fiat Palio MJD

The car was at 30kmph slowly giving way to others trying to take the left turn ahead.As the car moved towards the divider ,I notice a young drunkard trying to step onto the divider just ahead of me.I further slow to 1st gear,momentarily stop and move on keeping a slight left turn in order to avoid the guy.As the car just passed him ,suddenly he slips and crashes onto the rear right door of the car and is knocked unconscious!:Shockked:

I stop with a loud, short screech ( this noise actually gave me further trouble).I just couldnt get it since I was just in 1 st gear and the speed was not even 10kmph!?

My Father and Mom were with me in the car.Dad got down followed by me and went up to the guy.Called 108 and people started gathering around .
Blood was slowly oozzing from his right lip.everyone checked him.He was fine,in a deep sleep with a pungent odor of 'Sarai'.
Now,everyone began his own version of the accident!
A guy said I hit him head on,others simply passed me off ,while some others began the analysis in their own intelligent way -
1.I slowdown,he crashes and I tried to flee!!
2.I hit him,he crashes on the divider!.
3.He simply slumps on my car,I turn left and he's dragged on between the car and divider!!!

We ignored them with a laugh,saying they dint actually see what happened.
As the Ambulance arrived ,Dad got into it with the patient and headed off to Kondapur Area Hospital.The paramedic who was in the ambulance appeared to dictate terms to us by saying they will take him to a private hospital first!
But Dad simply said 'Govt hospital first,then ,if serious case,shift him to Private'.Dad then went on to explain the Standard rules of 108 service.The paramedic agreed grudgingly.
There was no ID or phone with the guy.Just some crumbled pieces of paper.
We couldnt identify him to inform his near ones.Someone had an idea to inform the vendors on the road to convey his whereabouts in case someone came looking for him.
At the hospital,the Doc confirmed him as Drunk with No external or Internal injuries.His bleeding lip was the only casualty.He did not even need Stitches!!
They said they would keep him under observation till Conscious and discharge him if he's OK.
The Case was taken in as 'Unknown vehicle hit' by both the Paramedic and Doc.
It was a Blessing for us,since nobody at the scene actually pointed towards us or infact atleast Accused us and also maybe since Dad simply got in the Ambulance without anyone asking ,must have saved us from being cornered further.In fact everyone who were there simply vanished once the Ambulance came!!!
We gave our contact details to the Doc on duty and after his assurances, left the place.
Hope the guy is fine and safe .
There was no dent or scratch on the car.The situation has ended well.

My Lesson on this: Be patient in an Accident scene,dont react to others comments,dont show any signs of worry.Be a good listener and give short answers.You dont have to explain if its not your fault.And be the first to offer help.Not money.

You are bit lucky in the sense that that guy didn't get hurt badly.Or else these mobs would have beaten you or shouted at you until you gave the money.But good thing is that you called an ambulance took him to the hospital.

I'm just curious to understand about the case being booked under "Unknown vehicle hit". What would happen now? Will the cops starts searching for the unknown vehicle? Were there any FIR filed or something?

Good that you & your family is safe & I would still call it a good day for you that you didn't have to undergo much pain & here with us to share your experience. Thanks for that though.

Alton, good that this got over with no major hassles with the crowd or with the police.

I saw a drunk guy a couple of evenings ago, at about 7 pm who could hardly walk. He was struggling to start his scooter and keep upright while raising a foot to kickstart it. I went to him and suggested he should call someone or at least wait for some time before leaving. He grinned at me, shook his head, started the scooter and rode off on the wrong side.

Full marks to your father for handling the situation very well.

I guess I too had a similar experience a long time ago. It was not a drunk it was a little child who just came running in front of my two wheeler (speed 30 kmh) as she suddenly thought it unwise to hold hands of her elder sibling who was calling her to stop.
It was 15th of August that day and people were there by the dozen. Of course I fell down from my 2 wheeler due to instant braking. I was sure to be thrashed by the mob although it was not my fault. One of the onlookers a school peon came to my aid. He had seen what had happened and he told me to quickly take her to the hospital. I took here there abandoning my 2 wheeler.I was quite panicky and called my Dad who came in 15 mins. He handled the situation in a similar manner. In my case the girl was not even bleeding. I mean she just had a sore shoulder. Still her parents (whom I assume were from a nearby slum) created a ruckus and cursed me. The doctor shooed them away and her father started demanding money from me. I had already paid the doctor for his treatment. My father calmly gave him the address of a specialist who was my friend and assured him that he would get free treatment. At this the child and her parents disappeared never to be seen.
Well summary is "All Fathers are more experienced , calm and have tons of patience and I hope I inculcate some of that in me :) "

You did the right thing Alton. Most people would just curse the bloke and drive on.

Christ, these roads are getting crazier and crazier, as if we did'nt have to bother about hitting pedestrians, now we have to watch out for pedestrians hitting us too. Oooh, time to get myself a driver now.

Hey but ur driver is human too. He too can face the same problems you would face while driving. Come to think of it , just an interesting quote I heard the other day from a friend. The richer the people grow the more expensive wheels they buy. But then they never get to enjoy them as they are always chauffered around. So the driver has all the fun driving the Mercs and the Beemers and the Audis :uncontrol

Aargee,yes it was a Day for all of us.Thanks.Well,the Unknown Vehicle report would not actually lead to FIR as is this case.But it does lead to FIR if there was a major injury or death.Actually it was the Doc who suggested it aftr hearing my father's version.Even the Ambulance paramedic suggested this.Infact they appreciated my father for his humane service saying others would simply speed off.Thanks to them.

Thanks for the good words,Straightdrive.I too see many people who cannot even get up from their seats in the bar.Imagine what they would do outside on their way home!

Forget the incident, and thank your lucky stars nothing else happened.Had the drunkard come under the wheels of your car, things would have been absolutely different.Good that nothing like that happened.

An update :
I really wanted to know what happened to the guy.So,casually called up the Doc and enquired about the guy.
Well,apparently he had been identified as Mr.Shakeel from Bihar, on his DL inside his trouser inner pocket.He came to his senses around 1am,weak and nauseated.He was discharged the next morning by the Doc after giving him some Gyan on what happened to him,how he was brought and treated.He profusely thanked the doc and left in a jiffy.
All's ended Well.

Good that you kept your cool and took him to hospital.

We had a similar experience in 2003 near Malleshwaram(BLR), but we were 25% of responsibile for the accident. Damage - Rs.1500 and 3 hours in hospital.
