Hi everybody,

I have started this thread to share some strange and unusual sightings on Indian roads.

Recently on my way back to Chennai from Chidambaram, I saw a train locomotive being transported on a truck. I have see a lot of trucks on trains, but this blew me away.

Has anyone seen something weird like this.

That's a WDM-2B locomotive, (16 cylinder, 2,600 hp) with a total weight of approx 112 tonnes!

As far as i know, the weight capacity of new generation multi axles trucks is 75 tonnes (correct me if i'm wrong). How safe is this old trailer carrying this mammoth? Unless ofcourse the diesel engine of the locomotive has been removed!

I have seen these engines being transported on a goods train. I remember reading some news about the fully-refurbished metre-gauge locomotives being sent to an African country. The refurbishing was done at the Golden Rock locomotive/engine workshop at Trichy.

That is a YDM-4 loco (metre gauge).

May be your guess about engine is correct.
Here is another picture of the same loco which supports the guess.

Next picture shows even the wheels and axles removed. But, sure Engine and traction motor must have been removed.

Oops... yes you are correct. That gets the weight down to 88 tonnes. And with the wheels removed, i guess it's safe after all.

YDM is written on the loco itself. It's traveling short-hood! :D

I saw a couple of them at Ranebennur. That part of NH4 is pathetic and goes through villages. The two trucks held up traffic for a long time. The thought that came to my mind about these locos were this. Anyway, the locos will be pressed in to service on rails again. Why don't they attach it to some goods train and transport it over rails to the destination?

Guess now it makes sense that these may be refurbished for exports.

Guess thats the fastest Diesel vehivle on the road :-)

many MG sections in TN recently underwent GC didnt they? perhaps this freed up some YDM4's which may be reassigned to other MG lines ex lucknow or in Gujarat.

This is a Coonoor shed loco doing service with the NMR. Except for possibly going to the Railway museum in Chennai, I can't figure out a reason why it seem to be coming towards Chennai.

Wow, you guys are able to recognise train engines too.

How's this? Found it on Bangalore - Madurai highway. Looks like this guy is carrying a battle tank. Any other guesses?
