Hi delhi2009, looks like you had a good trip there! I visited Rohtang way back in July 1998, in a Maruti Omni taxi. The snow had receded quite a bit from the roads in July then. We did Chandigarh-Mandi-Kullu-Manali-Rohtang. We reached the highest point of Rohtang (last 1 km stretch, I think) on a pony.

The road from Marhi to Rohtang was very narrow and treacherous. How is the road now ?

Please post a detailed travelogue

A Baleno, sounds exciting, but how many times did you seriously scrapped the underbody? DId you take any precaution like putting some underbody protector and spacer to increase ground clearance.

This was in 1st Week of Dec. 2009 . Luckily i was able to drive all the way to Rohtang . It was a late Start for us from Hotel Ambassador (Some call it Manu-Alya etc.) and we started off at 11.30am . The roads were not very good and we saw 2 Indicas returning because they had their Tanks Punctured and made me and my wife scared ! But i had to go there and we decided to do so !

Now it so happened enroute that just few KM Back from Rohtang (There was some heavy snow and a bus had passed over it creating tracks. There was a huge pileup of cars and i decided to play dangerous, i drove over the snow and just before it was left by about 50 Meters, the car started slipping on the snow !) To make things worse, the chamber being hot, the snow underneath was melting and making the car feel go low. I asked my wife to get down and I tried a few times more. At one point, the ODO reached 100KM mark too ! but was all in vain with tyres slipping. Somehow i realized how dangerous it was and how close i had been to a disaster had the tyres moved the car ahead with that odo reading !!!! (Well i did loose myself for a couple of seconds when i tried to race myself out !) Then finally a local driver without any damn help, reversed the car 20 meters or so and then, raced it out !

You may notice the wet tyre patches on road in pic 3 and thats because of the same reason and for other cars passing through that snow part too ! Well the roads were pretty bad and i'll add some more photographs and videos soon in my next post !

As for denting the underside of the car, No, it did not happen because i drive on 14" Radials from Nankang and till date (TouchWood !!!) the car has never scrapped the underside.

Here are some more shots we took enroute. All of the shots are taken between 11.30 am and 2.30pm but due to heavy clouds, it may seem its late in afternoon.

Wow. I feel so bad seeing this pics.

I had also been to Rohtang, after stopping over at Manali and Shimla for almost a week. It was one of the best experiences I ever had and will never forget the drive, the place or the scenary

I was at Rohtang in Dec 2008. I was a ride of lifetime.
We hired a Maruti Van and the driver was a champ.
An unforgettable journey.

wow, really excellent pics, delhi2009, I am envying you now, I had visited Shimla/Manali/Rohtang in Jun 2008 in my NHC and it was indeed a wonderful and thrilling experience,

Your pics reminded me of the same fun/frolic that I had at that time.

All I can say is one has to really visit the beautiful Himalayas to enjoy their beauty. Now, being in Bangalore, I really miss the beauty of these beautiful and enchanting Himalayas.

Well, I will try to dig some pics from my home PC and post them.

This is the dirty, crowded & highly commercialised Rohtang La that I witnessed while on my way back from Leh in June '09.
