drunken accident and rowdy mob :(

one hell of a night(30th dec)......it all started on a trip to meet some friends in khan market in new delhi for dinner. I left my house in my 1984 mercedes 240d (123) on the way to khan market from anand niketan where i live...i had to stop for refuelling so as i was about to turn into the company owned fuel station at shanti path(the all womens pump) a speeding motorcycle coming from the wrong side hit my left front fender and there was a huge thud!! leaving me experience some sort of a mild shock, i switch off the car and get out to see this guy lying at the side of the road moaning with the bike flown off somewhere and my car headlight, indicator, beading, fender, bonnet all smashed :( anyways this wasnt as bad as it got.....soon after within 2 mins there was an angry mob of the dudes friends who all apparently lived around somewhere and were all really reaking of alcohol....these guys had been having a party earlier pre 31 kinds!! so i basically got beaten up by the mob evn after not being in the wrong and even after being a big guy if a mob of 40+ppl start attacking you really cant do anything but pray so.......later ofcourse i took the guy to the hospital(where they found out he was drunk tooo!!!!) i am just writing this so that all you fellow bhpians drive safely and carefully 'cos this world does have a lot of nuts around.

to sum it all up......DONT drink and DRive !!!! a

Why didn't you consider filing a police complaint against the mob of xx people? I wouldn't have paid a penny if I was beaten up, leave apart paying for hospital bills.

frankly, i think india is such an unsafe country that we should be taking the law in our own hands. One who kills to protect himself, should never be charged of anything, but should be medaled for his bravery! unfortunately for me, dad's the reason i am sticking my a** here if not, wud be having a lovely life back in Melb.!

things like these keep happening around .

around 6 months ago, i was coming from the outskirts of hyderabad, and at nite a few ppl - DRUNK, in bikes were trying to stop me, they were parked there on the road, bottles in hand, and one of them came directly in front of my SCORPIO, imagine! drinkin really takes the sense outta one!

i knew they were up to some sh*t, so i jus veered a lil bit, so that i dont totally knock down the guy, but then, i saw to it that my front Crash Guard hit the fellow solid and he fell rocking down somewhere, i could see in the rear mirror as i flew ahead. I think this is the way they are to be dealt, and i usually never stop for anyone who comes right in front of the vehicle, "FORCING" me to stop. again, u can easily make out how the person is, he looks bad, i run around him

Similar thing happened around the same time, i was over a flyover in hyd, and was returning with family from a party, was around 1am. and there were 2 ppl on a bike, totally drunk, and they were "zigzaging" and not letting me overtake, seeing family inside, they were not at all moving aside... well, i finally had to take my own decission, and as he moved to a side a lil bit, i flew past, and unfortunate for him, he bent towards my Scorpio, and his bike fell on the back of my car and then fell down the other side. he was coming at a good speed, around 50-60, so all i cud see in the rear view mirror was they rolling round n round on the road, bike flew somewhere! and idiots put a lil dent on my scorpio! before me was a Call Centre Indica with 4 gals in it, and those guys started misbehaving with them too, but somehow the indica driver managed to sneak past them. well, saare "paap" mere haathon hi kyun! now i gotta convince God not to take these incidents as black mark against me! uff!

Well. I had almost the same incident - tho the mob wasn't drunk but they all had the 70's hangover against the guy-in-the-car - who cares if the guy on the scooter was dead drunk and hit a stationary car ? I did take him to the hosp, and then go to the cops (huge dent and side impact beam bent) but they were dyed in the same ink and the FIR was filed against me!
As for this happening in India - one of my classmates died when his Civic was crushed under a pickup coming down the wrong side of a freeway - drunk guy again. Of course he might have gotten charged etc, but **** happens.
Its more imp to get organized to clean up this mess and get some sense into traffic laws enforcement and fairness.

Any ideas how we can make this saner ? Maybe a team of volunteer-lawyers, ppl with contacts - essentially a network across the big cities to ensure at the least the carowners in black n white cases are not victimized. Can't do much about the grey ones - else too many people will just use that as an excuse to drive carelessly.

Parallely - we need to inculcate defensive driving. An NGO for these alone may be worth it.

What do the cops plan to do about these "I am poor so no law applies to me" people/mob. These guys need to understand that they are not Amitabh Bachchan from Zanjeer or Deewar. You know where the accident happened, you have seen all those ba****s who roughed you up which means you can easily identify them. So when and more importantly what action are these cops going to take? Keep pressurizing the cops to move on this. Remember, you were in the right and you still got roughed up. Those guys need to understand that they and their beloved friend were in the wrong.

Also, you said the cops filed a case against you for negligent driving but the doctors found alcohol in the biker so now the case needs to be withdrawn against you and filed against that biker. Also, he should pay for your damages. Speak to a good lawyer and take these guys to the cleaners. It will be fun to watch his eyes burst when he is handed over the repair bill for a Mercedes. Show no mercy, buddy because they showed none towards you.

Its India. and we have to realise it while driving too.
It always happens that the person who looks to be rich is on the receiving end even when its not his fault.!

Its now only upto us to drive safely while passing through these areas.

Frankly this is a very sad state of affairs in India. Part of this is a hangover from our socialist roots when being rich was considered being evil. Once I saw a ram into the back of a Santro that was stationary and the crowd that gathered dragged the couple that was in the Santro and beat them up. My son (then about 3) also witnessed this.

About 15 years back I stopped to help a girl knocked down by a Honda Accord (one of those imported ones) and almost got my self lynched by the mob in the process (I was driving a Maruti 800). Weird. That was my first and last expererince with trying to help someone knocked down. A few months back i witnessed an accident near the Santa Cruz police station and drove to the Station to report it. I was scolded for disturbing them.

Hey, I know how this feels but I hope u will sill stop if u see a TEAM-BHP sticker on a car thats involved in a crash !!! Though the law enforcers here suck big time and I feel that the best bet is to just drive off ... specially if this happens at night though during the day it depends as to which part of the country it happens in. If its a civilised area then one can stop ...else BYE BYE !!

Cheers

In india if you knock someone down the best policy is to run away. If they note down your number(if anybody does) then you can always site mob fury.
Incident 1. Outer ring road this huge threewheeler, brand new(those minidors), going at 50-60 kmph, not letting me overtake. I overtake from left and that guy due to high speed loses control or something and hits rear of my car. In my rearview I see that autorick loosing control and hitting the divider bouncing etc., but did not overturn,
I swiftched off my headlights and raced ahead for few seconds so that nobody can note the number.
2. Travelling on highway this dude who has had too much "afeem" comes in front. I brake hard at 90kmph, skid and hit his bike. The guy flies off, but is quite unhurt. even if he is hurt he will feel it the next day when the effects of drug wears. I decide to run away, but right behind me is the NHAI van who see what has happened. they abuse they guy who is hollering about the police and asking me for compensation. the NHAI guys ask me to go and say that they will handle the guy. If there had been nobody around I would not have bothered stopping too.

These idiots who drive like mad under drug influence need no sympathy. Hit and run. you can always deny you were there or say you ran fearing police. Unless the person dies nobody in police will bother investigating, and even in that case unless there is a strong witness or the dead dude is influential.

That won't happen. Remember the Rtech Skoda incident? You may have obeyed all rules and laws, but, if the other chap gets hurt, you're at fault. In other words, if you buy a nice, safe car, you suck!
Take some time and read my signature. It'll make sense now.

Very sorry to hear the incident.

In India, if you riding a car - you're rich.. so most "non-privileged" people are jealous of you!

In most accidents in India, local people first try to loot the victims instead of trying to rescue them first!!!

It can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime......
