“You don’t need to sell your house to buy a sports car”

IAB can reveal that this is the tag line Audi’s picked to market the S4 in India. The German company will start a campaign soon featuring Bollywood actress Gul Panag asking you to vote for Audi to bring the S4 to India.

The Audi S4 is to the Audi A4 what BMW M3 is to the 3 Series or what the C63 AMG is to the C-Class. You can argue that the RS4 is the right contemporary to the C63 or the M3, but the RS4 does not come in the sedan body style and is only available as an estate model.

Sedan or not, the S4 is a rival to the 335i , NOT the M3.
The price is correspondingly less in line with the deficit in performance vis a vis the other 2.
The price difference between this and the a4 3.0 T wont be a great deal which might end up making the 3.0 T quite redundant.

Looking at its pricing, I think the RS5 is the direct competitor to M3 & C63 AMG.

The new RS4 and RS5 boasts around 450 horses which the next M3 will be sitting on! M6 is in the range of 560 horses and that sits well in range with RS5 and RS6 both.

I think price and body styles comparisons are different aspects of the equation.

Actually, Audi discontinued the sales of the RS4 and replaced it altogether with the RS5. The A5 is nothing but a coupe-like version of the A4.

The 6-Series is more of a touring car rather than an outright sports-car, whereas the RS5 is a proper sports-car. The M6 is a powerful car alright, but it's still a grand-tourer. The Mercedes SL63 AMG would be the appropriate car to compare the M6 with, while Audi has no touring-car in their portfolio.

Although Audi doesn't sell the RS4 Sedan anymore, they still sell the RS4 Avant version in Europe. How I wish they sold the RS4 Avant in North America...

There is a huge market for Estates/Station Wagons in Europe. Audi stopped with the S when they introduced the B8. The B8 never came with the RS moniker. Except for the Avant, of course. Production of the B8 RS4 began only recently.

When the facelift B8 RS4 Avant was launched , Audi announced that a sedan version could be launched and am not ruling it out at all.
As far as comparing goes , the RS5 has only been compared to the M3 and C63 because as mentioned before , the b8 RS4 has not been launched yet.
There is no difference in the engine of the RS 5 and RS 4 Avant.
The M6 which has absolutely nothing in common with the above discussed segment, will take on the Audi RS-7 and the CLS 63 AMG.

Actually here's what the BMW: Audi: Merc comparison looks like, though there's no hard and fast rules as to what you can compare to what. Also some models from each manufacturer are currently out of production.

335i : S4 : C350
M3 sedan : RS4 : C63 sedan
M3 coupe : RS5 : C63 coupe
M5 sedan : RS6 : E63
M6 conv : R8 conv : SL63

I would agree to all but the last. I don't think R8 is the same type of car as the M6 and SL63. M6 and SL63 are high performance GT cars, I think the R8 is more in the sports car mold.

You're right, but till such time as they have an RS7, it's the only car Audi has in that segment. No doubt the R8 is smaller and more focused a sports car than an M6 or SL63.

4.0L Biturbo TFSI engine from the Audi S8 & the Bentley Conti GT.
Should be a cracker in the lighter RS-7 albeit in a lower state of tune im sure.
