EVO X, let the modifications begin

Hi

Most of us love the Evolution series from Mitsubishi , the MR editions were downright wicked.

When Mitsubishi launched the Evo X in India it was a fantastic moment.

However Mitsubishi India needs some members from Team BHP in their management, they launched the EVO X for sure but only with the Auto transmission option.

We were approached by a EVO X owner , his wish list was as follows

1) Transmission warning pops up occasionally on the instrument cluster the and gear changes become jerky
2) Performance enhancement with option of using unleaded non premium petrol.

1) Transmission:

The EVO X automatic transmission is a Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST) which utilizes wet multiplate clutches.

Having worked on the GTR R35 dual clutch transmission and lessons learned from that we dived to solve the problems with the SST transmission.

The transmission was checked for any faults, there were no faults and inspite of the transmission working as designed in the factory it was giving an error.

We drained the original transmission fluid and decided to replace it with better oil.

Instantaneously the transmisison sounded less clunky, gear shifts felt more positive

We test drove the car in peak city traffic and highway for over 150kms with outside temperatures over 35deg celcius, the result : No transmission error.

We are still testing the car , it has done over 235kms under very aggresive driving and no transmission error.

2) Performance :

The owner wants to use his car everyday and everywhere, the car should not be dependant on 97 octane fuel.

After detailed discusions with the owner and loads of car talks we decided on the following.

Intake : There are load of options in intake for the EVO X , we decided for the OTA series of full carbon fibre airboxes from BMC airfilters Italy, for those who are technical minded more information can be
found here O.T.A. - Oval Trumpet Airbox by BMC | Tech Specifics

The Carbon Airbox from BMC replaces the stock airbox , the BMC OTA gives a bump of ~10HP.

We also added a Blow off Valve, the owner loves the sound of one ,we call it the LOL valve.

a video to give you guys a gist

Exhaust:

Our goal was to get the max performance without doing an ecu re-calibration along with keeping in-cabin drone to a minimum as this would be a daily driver.

We decided to get rid of the secondary catalytic converters and oem mufflers, the new exhaust system is lighter and sounds simply fantastic.

It is louder than the average exhaust but its just what the owner wanted, drone is a bare minimum and the sound rises as the boost kicks in.

A short video of what a EVO should really sound

We will be testing the transmission and have kept it under observation to make sure it is 100% reliable under Indian driving conditions before we move in and start modding the hell out of the EVO X

You guys did a good job on the car. What exhaust is that? The Evo is such an amazing car. The only thing that stopped me from buying one is the transmission. Love the manual in this car

Loved the earlier EVOs, but found the EVO X to be quite a dud in terms of driving experience. It's too soft & docile.

I'm curious to know of the brilliant answers that the HM Service Station would have given him. After all, his car is in warranty, right? I shudder at the thought of those guys working on an EVO or a Montero.

The factory oil was the culprit then? Did the heat & stop-go driving conditions of India play a part in this?

What exactly was done to make sure that the car runs fine on regular octane petrol?

The car is in warranty, I dont think he even tried heading to the workshop, Its a worldwide problem the evo x gearbox faces , its more in India though.

Yes the factory oil is one of the reasons, the rate in which the temp rise with the stock oil is quite high.

The stop-go not so much, the high ambient temps played a big role

We made sure the knock sums are within safety , the ecu detunes the car for unleaded fuel.

Awesome work! But why is it not sounding all that great? The BMC to blame?

Hi Quarter ,

The sound is subjective to the owner of the car, we only try and make sure the sound complements the marque of the car, a Porsche sounding like a GTR is what we don't do .

When you say not sounding great , not sounding great compared to which car ?

Also the BMC has enhanced the induction sound which was non-existent in the stock setup.

With all due respect to your work its just my opinion and anything wrong would be due to lack of knowledge.... Yes the sound is subjective to the owner but what I meant to say was that it sounds a bit rough compared to a stock exhaust or after market ones...

We really appreciate your inputs , the stock system has a secondary catalytic converter and the rear mufflers. These smoothen out the sound but also in the process reduce the DB and increase back pressure.

In a naturally aspirated engine the exhaust sound is "smoother" compared to a turbocharged car where you will hear pops and gnarls.

That is why you will notice the 911 carrera sound much smoother compared to a 911 turbo .

Same case with the Nissan 350/370 Z engines compared to the GTR R35 engines.

@Racetech Thanks for sharing the information
So the reason for the rough sound in the case of the Evo ere is bypassing the secondary catalytic converter... Does the turbo whistle also become more prominent with this?

Hey, so how did the test go? Is the car still performing as tested(after so many months on-road) under dusty/stop-go humid conditions? Can you share some dyno readings for us regarding the bump/improved BHP? So how much of a back-pressure does the secondary muffler create? Is this only with india specific Evo X or is it a common thing to all evo X's world wide?

Re: EVO X, let the modifications begin

I am not sure but there have been some parts changed when Mitsubishi built the evo x fq 400. That cars puts out a bit over 400 bhp.

If you could source those parts and do similar work, there is nothing like that for mods to the evo
