Re: Audi launches the new R8 @ Rs 1.35-1.74 Cr

Major differences from the outgoing model;

Exterior –

1.New all-LED headlights and dynamic turn signals in the rear on all models. Their configuration is new – a special control unit transforms the strip-like daytime running lights into turn signals. The LEDs for the high and low beams are located above and below the daytime running lights. The headlights also include a static turning light.
2.The bumper has been redesigned. In all Audi R8 models, the black air intakes that direct air to the radiator and the brakes have three crossbars.
3.The new single frame grille has tapered top corners. The four rings are not on the grille, but on the hood.
4.18 or 19 inch wheels are stylized with a new rim design.

Interior –

1.Controls and trim variants get chrome rings and strips.
2.Needles of the instrument cluster have been redesigned.
3.Endowed with an aluminium finish, the paddles are larger.

Powertrain –

1.With the all-new seven-speed S tronic gearbox, all versions of the Audi R8 accelerate from zero to 100 km/h three-tenths of a second faster than the previous models.
2.Engines are 4.2L V8 and 5.2 L V10 with dry sump lubrication.
3.Better fuel economy is claimed too.

Chassis –

1.Lightweight, yet extremely stiff aluminium ASF body that weighs approximately 45kg lighter than its predecessor.
2.The R8 Spyder comes with a lightweight, electrohydraulically activated soft top.

Re: Audi launches the new R8 @ Rs 1.35-1.74 Cr

I always wondered why they have detuned the 4.2 V8 engine in the R8 to produce 20bhp less than the RS5. They haven't even rectified that in the facelift.

Glad it made it to our shores this early in it's launch. Audi seems to be focusing more on the high end category to build their brand image here. Whereas BMW and MB are moving focus to mass market.

The R8 is much lighter and hence even with lesser power it manages to be slightly quicker than the Rs5 with the same engine.
Having said that , identical power wouldn't have hurt and could've added to the performance albeit marginally. Nothing explains the 20hp variation when its the same block.
I am infact surprized the 4.2 V8 made it to the facelift. With the 4.0 TFSI V8 which is a brand new and much lighter block, going into most new Audi cars i expected it to find its way into the facelifted RS-5 & R8 v8.
Anyway am pretty sure this is the last we will see of the good old 4.2 V8. Its done its job pretty well

I guess Audi is taking advantage of influx of demand for the otherwise dying breed of NA V8 engines. They can be matched in power output by the turbo/supercharged engines but not in raw power feel. Almost all other rivals - AMG and BMW M have ditched the NA engines already.
I heard the last few production models of the current M3 have been selling at a premium due to this factor.

Re: Audi launches the new R8 @ Rs 1.35-1.74 Cr

Why is the 5.2 V10 called as "lamborghini sourced" engine in all auto media?

Afaik when Audi took over Lamborghini they revamped the bizarrini 6.5 V12 and added the 5.0 L V10 and then upgraded it with the 5.2 V10 in the gallardo.

So isn't the 5.2 the bigger version of the 4.2 V8 ?

Always wondered about this too. Maybe the engine block is the same for the V10s ? But then if volume is different how can the block be the same ?

The 5.2 and the 4.2 engines aren't really related.
The engine for the V10 R8(518bhp) and the new Gallardo(551bhp) is basically the same except in a different state of tune. The R8 V8 however has the same engine as the older RS4 , the B7 IIRC.
Please correct me if I'm wrong

At 1.58 crore for R8 V10. It has to be one of the best deals. What would the OTR figures be? I dont think anything besides the XKR is priced at a similar range?!

Lambo's and Ferrari's go beyond the 2.5 crore mark don't they?!

That's right. The v10 is an engine from Automobili Lamborghini which Audi made changes in where as the 4.2 V8 is an engine from the local Audi stables previously used on the RS4 just that over the years its been lightened an awful lot keeping in line with the emission, weight saving measures etc.

@fullrevs -
Yep. A gallardo with the same engine & more importantly same state of tune (550-2) is almost double the price IIRC. Cant think of a better car than the R8 at the price. Its simply astounding, the R8 v10.

Posting the below pics from Overdrive. Haven't come across any other pics of the 2013 R8 V10 on our roads. Prefer the headlamp setup of the earlier version though!

Supposedly, the car has clocked 2:12.711 at Buddh International Circuit, which is fastest by any road legal(?) car. It was driven by Karun Chandok. Still less than GHS's 458 Challenge GT.

The comparison made by you is completely wrong here. A street car cannot and should not be compared to a track built car. The time set by the R8 V10 Plus is commendable for the simple reason no tuning or fine alterations are made to it after a few laps like the 458 Challange, The laps the R8 would have done the time in would definately be under 200 odd laps. If you recollect it took 187 odd laps with breaks to retune the car and set the angle of the rear wing for the 458 Challange to set the 2 min something time.

R8 Plus = Race driver + Street legal car as apposed to the 458 Challange GT = Street/ Rally/ Drift/Race driver = Track built car.
