A screw is making that 5555 look like a 5655.

This is registered as a BMW made by Mercedes Benz

Isn't KA-22 the RTO code for Belgaum?

Anyways here is a W211 E Class.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Spotted this very nice 124 estate at the scrappers (Pudupet) long back. Seemed like a nice car which got into the wrong (ricer) hands later on in life. Followed up for a bit, but lost track after a while. A lot of Jugaad has been done to it over time. IIRC, it was claimed to be running a W210 petrol engine in it.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Imported Estate cars are very rare in India and to have one go to the scrappers is really a very sad thing. The body looks to be in good shape and it shouldn't be a difficult task to put a modern Mercedes engine into this and have it running. Also less electronics on the W124 would mean less problems and less maintenance.

The W124 was the basis for the Tata Estate and it shows in the design.

I am curious to know how you found this out? Is it because it appears so similar? Or Tata themselves state it?

I always suspected this was the case and my suspicions were confirmed when I met the guy who designed the Tata Estate and he confirmed he was inspired by the boss's Mercedes (Ratan Tata).

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Hi Foxbat, I merely went by the similarity in the appearances between the 2 cars. Maybe the designer took some cues from the W124T Merc's. If you look at the design of the Tata Estate wheel caps - the bear a lot of resemblance to the W124 alloys.

The W124, or any Mercedes were NOT the basis for the Tata Estate!

When, by the early 1970s, 66% new trucks on Indian roads were built by Tata, TELCO's legendary former chairman, Sumant Moolgaonkar and J R D Tata, wanted to get into passenger cars.

They signed up with Honda in 1986 to manufacture the Accord in India, but the government refused permission, forcing Telco to build their own designer studio in India.

The Tata Estate reused some body components of the 1986 Accord.
Measure and compare the Tata Estate doors, door-handles and dimensions and you will see what I mean.

My uncle was a director on the board of TELCO and CEO of one of the Tata companies. He had said that in a year or two, I could buy a "refined" Indian Tata passenger vehicle and made some drawings.

offtopic: Where were you in 1988? In 1988 I lived in upstate New York, writing software for IBM's Engg. Graphics Products. On a trip to India, I bought my first Mahindra MM540 4x4 with the Peugeot 2112 cc diesel.

Are you sure about this?

In 2005 I was an intern and GM, Halol in Gujarat and working on a project under the Head of Product Development. We were both from IIT and both enthusiastic about cars so we started discussing his career from the early 80s in Tata to GM.

He told me as a Management Trainee he met Ratan Tata and requested that they try to build a passenger car as new project. They took inspiration from his Mercedes (I am assuming it was a W124) and they developed the Tata Estate and Tata pickup. He also told me how they took the vehicle prototypes to the UK for testing.

In 1988 I lived in Connecticut and my uncle (mama) worked in IBM wrting codes

Once upon a time a favorite with most film stars and politicians - and today no one wants to even look at it.

Then came the Land cruisers and LX470s. Then the Porsche Cayennes , Range Rover's and Audi Q7s.

Hi Allen, tried to PM you but looks like you have reached the limit. Can you please pin point the location of this Pajero ? Will be helpful for a friend who has a similar model and can use this for scavenging parts.

its clear that this one is involved in some police case, its not easy to pick something up involved in a police case unless its up in an auction, and that happens once in a blue moon.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Yes I believe this one maybe involved in a police case. 2 reasons - 1. It was dumped outside a police station and 2. It has some markings on the rear window (maybe the case no). I doubt vehicles seized by the cops can be easily released or bought by the public unless they come up for auction. The best option would be to get a unused Pajero which is to be scrapped rather than one which is already scrapped. You will be able to salvage more from a "to-be" scrapped one.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Look what 6 years can do to a Porsche Cayenne.

First seen in 2008 when the facelift was just launched.

Then seen it 2 years ago in 2014 - not sure what's the current condition.
