Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

The famous Khandala Rolls Royce has now started deteriorating - the windshield is broken, seats seem to have been unmounted, suspension has given way, number plates missing. Anyone knows the history of this Rolls - who owns it? I have a feeling this RR was featured in one of the BSM issues more than a decade ago and was mentioned to be some Talera's (of Talera Ford). Question is why is it left there to rot? Is there a dispute on the ownership? What would be the value of the car in "as is where is" condition? What kind of money needs to be spent to restore it to it's original state?

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

That Buick is a beauty - wonder why it has been abandoned. The body condition looks pretty good and just needs a good wash. Any idea if it is on sale or abandoned?

Regarding the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow I posted above - found some rather interesting stories.

I had the same thought. Even the interiors were very much intact and looks like recently abandoned.

Location seems to be a garage and going by this snap with radiator fan and few other stuffs on the rear seat, I doubt either it is awaiting spares or abandoned due to non availability of spares.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

There are 2 W124 Mercedes E Class (imported ones - pre facelift, pre 1995) which are probably on sale if anyone is interested. Both the cars are without engines and will be sold in as is where is condition. The cars are lying somewhere in Oshiwara. Just got to know about them a few days ago so thought I'll update this thread.

P.S. I do not know the owner nor the history of the cars.

Would be a great parts car for a W124 owner with spare space. All the cosmetic bits can be used (including the windscreen), and also some mechanical bits.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

These were all spotted at the Taxi stand in LaxmiBai Nagar, near INA market.

There were a few more in broken condition.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Sky Blue color 1978 VW Golf MK1

Hardly 100 meters from my home, there used to be this left hand drive 5 door hatch parked. Every Sunday morning, the gentleman owner (a very senior retired person from aviation industry) start this lovely car, take a short round of about a km and return home to park it. This was to keep the car in running condition. The terrible sound of the car and manner of this sound would make me feel how unhappy the pistons would be struggling to transmit the power in 2nd level of transmission (in which it was forced to run).

I was always a big fan of his car and wanted to click some pictures before it was too late. I indeed missed this "easiest" opportunity. Was this because I wasn't a BHPian then? Perhaps "yes".

Since, I too was maintaining an ol' 1987 Maruti Suzuki struggling for OEM SGP spares(brand new), I once asked this pepper and salt haired gentleman that how and from where was he managing to arrange spares for his '78 VW Golf MK1, to only to hear that some garages do "jugaad" (an improper but a practical workaround) and repair the old parts to make it workable and fit them again.

Later, as VW Polo was introduced in India, this gentleman was perhaps the first I know who bought one. I could easily make out his love for VW. The ol' Golf was still there besides two other cars he owned. Today, while I can still spot the VW Polo, I suppose its been 2-3 years since the Golf has vanished.

I will try to check with him on this whenever I happen to see him strolling around. I'd like to hear from him on how did he part with it? And if possible, will arrange some pictures to post here. Thanks.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Some reasons that I can think of for most of the cars :
  • Availability / costs of spares and high running costs are the primary reasons for many of these cars rotting.
  • Cars under family / company dispute and hence rotting around in car parks, residences, office basements.
  • Abandoned in garages due to major repair works which are not affordable for someone who has bought it used.
  • Cars lying in police station that are involved in accidents or other criminal cases.
  • Cars lying with the DRI offices which have avoided taxes.

Does anyone on Team-BHP have an import/classic car that is rotting or dumped away or neglected?

Hi V12!
How are you! Off-topic, but, silently read thru your Duke 390 thread a few days ago. Congrats on your acquisition. Coming to the question, Yes! I do have a LHD MB 123D '79 lying idle. I would not say rotting away as the car is still washed once a week or so, but the availability of spares has made it quite un-driveable now. Contacted a few workshops in KL for restoration, but all quote a hefty fee. So its parked as it is, I hope to restore it to its former glory as it is very close to my dad. He loves it, even now, he says he is yet to come across a car with such a stability. So, if i may ask, why the question?

cheers!

You forgot the biggest - TIME. Rich businessmen simply don't have the time to spend on old cars...and trust me, these cars need a lot of effort.

Time is money, V12!

Owner with more money than time = abandoned car.
Owner with more time than money = abandoned car.

Few people have both (time + money).

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Thanks for the wishes Nikhil! The question was just like that to know reasons why anyone would keep their vehicle idle and unused. Obviously there are a lot of genuine reasons too. Glad to know that you are planning to restore yours and all the very best to you. The W123 series is one of my favorite Merc's. Could you post some pics if you don't mind.

Thanks,
V12

Well i have a E36 that (for the lack of a better word) is dumped away right now. But its not because i cant maintain her or don't have the time to drive her- its because the registration has expired and i can't get the NoC to re-register her from Delhi. That being said, she is cleaned every 10 days and started almost every 3/4th day and will be serviced soon.

So you can add the damn NGT as another reason for many of the cars being dumped/neglected.

Belongs to RTDC, Jaipur. These were government owned and henced should have been auctioned off a long time ago. Tax paid money of the citizens rotting away out of sheer ignorance and carelessness of incompetent government employees.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Sad to see an iconic car like the Nissan 300ZX/Fairlady in such a state. Looks like a very buggered up car with 3 different wheels (one being a space saver). The 300ZX and the Toyota Corsa are MH registered cars - probably sold there and then dumped for major repair works.
