Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Yup a Toyota Crown - one of the most popular imported cars in the 80s/90s (A look at the Supercar/Import section in the 80/90's.....). I guess spares will be easily available for this car so should be easy to restore this car to its original glory.

Back then it was considered as Toyota's S Class - the top of the line loaded with Air Suspension and a CD system and all the bells and whistles.

A 5th gen Honda Accord from the 90s (A look at the Supercar/Import section in the 80/90's.....) now abandoned (more like neglected) and gathering dust.

Anyways here is a W211 E Class.
Where do Old Mercs go to die? Shortage of space in Mumbai, these cars are taken to a scrapyard outside Mumbai and dumped there. Here are the above 2 Mercs that were spotted in 2016. There were a couple of other older Mercs there - one W124, 2 W210s, W202 and W203 C Class. I must say this looked like a very scenic barn find.

I happened to pass by this place very recently and believe me or not - looks like possibly all the Mercs , BMWs and Audi's reported in this thread were all present at one place.

For a brief moment that I slowed down to take a look, I seen a couple of
Audi's - Q7s, A3s, A6s and an A8
Mercedes - couple of E classes (mind you not the W123s or W124s, but W212s), C Classes.
BMWs - E90 3 Series and a F01 7 series.

A perfect heaven for people who are looking to salvage spare parts.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Spotted this unidentified import in Chennai near Elliot's Beach. It had been abandoned by the side of the road along with a White Maruti Zen as seen in the photo.

A mid-size luxury car of the 90's (A look at the Supercar/Import section in the 80/90's.....) - the Toyota Corsa / Tercel was imported in small numbers and used to compete with the likes of the Cielo, Astra and Escort (Cielo, Astra, Escort & other yesteryear Cars - Where have they disappeared?).

Most of these Corsa's / Tercel's were grey imports - and were available brand new for around 10 lakhs. In other markets I believe this competed with the Suzuki Esteem (or Baleno in other markets) -however due to it being imported, it was more expensive here.

Thanks to Swapnil for sharing these pics! Looks like yet another victim of the AIR SUSPENSION epidemic! Audi Q7 in a parking lot near the Vashi Railway Station.

How expensive it is to repair or replace the air suspension of such cars that the owners end up leaving them in an abandoned state? I guess we have a few Mercedes, Ranges and other such examples in the same thread where these chariots of kings are abandoned because of air suspension failure and are seen sitting low.
Looking at the pics of the Q7, I am doubtful if the air suspension can get so much expensive that it becomes pricier than the resale value of the car itself.

Additionally, why can't the owner 'plan out' something and get a total loss insurance claim for such cars?

Sad to see such a beauty in such condition. Its a October 2011 model with 2nd owner registered at Vashi RTO (Source: Vahan.nic.in).
Her primary hometown was pune and I had spotted her many times in and around Pune. Air suspension failure might not be the only reason for her present condition. She is 7 years old and her FMV as per current time would be anywhere around 25 lakhs.

So as per my knowledge, this might not only be the case of air suspension failure but also probably a flood damaged or stolen car. If she is flood damaged then she can be used as 'spare part' car. Other than electronic items all other parts should be intact.

In cases like this where the car is lying idle for many weeks/months, the air suspension will naturally leak (the same way as tyres lose air). Starting the car would probably restore the ride height in under a minute.

So the bottomed-out suspension could just be a byproduct of the car lying around, and not necessarily the reason it was abandoned.

For example, my friends W220 sags at one corner within a few hours of being parked, but within 30 seconds of starting the car - it looks & behaves just fine.
