Glad I found them before I booked by ticket to Bhubhaneshwar.

The search goes on.
India's restrictive import policies on used cars make it the worst country for car enthusiasts on a limited budget. If we want something reasonably priced we need to search for damaged cars like this, talk to shady used car dealers / garage owners and RTO agents for registration and waste hours trying to restore rubbish cars because of exorbitant used car prices.

I wish the government would amend vintage car import rules by classifying 30 year old cars as vintage / classic cars and allow free import at low customs duty. This would have little to no impact on the protectionism that automakers in India currently enjoy.

Quite a few GTI’s for sale down south. One for sale in GJ as well.

You can have a look on the online platforms.

Even I was thinking of making a quick trip to gather some information about the car

This is a very mouth watering car even in its current condition.

True.

Leave the past license raj era. They could atleast change things now. Most countries have a liberal import policy for 25+ year old cars. Like, who is going to import a 25+ yr old vehicle for utilitarian purpose and take away sales from local manufacturers?

We have an exemption for pre-1950 cars, but (no offence to those collectors) that is elitist and for a group of concour level car owners. Would have been good, atleast if it had a rolling year criteria.

Anyways, as a result we have car prices jacked by atleast 10-50X times.

The GTIs listed for sale online are priced at 17 to 20 lakhs. Given that VW was unable to sell them at this price when they were new, in my opinion these prices are very high for a used car with potential DSG gearbox issues which are expected to come up in the future.

I would not mind buying a used GTI for around 7 lakhs but the listed prices do not seem realistic. If we can get a car in bad shape like the Odisha car for 3-4 lakhs and then spend another 3 to 4 lakhs getting it repaired then it would be a good buy IMO and I am guessing that is why there was interest in this car by forum members

Honestly its quite impossible to get a decent condition 2016/2017 onwards GT TSI for 7 lakhs these days let alone a GTI. The prices being quoted in the used car market is way too high citing high demand for the enthusiast segment that is already short on options and chip shortages on new cars has made the situation even more adverse.

I was in the fray for a Stage II GT TSI project but backed out looking at 9 out of 10 cars being plagued with weak gearboxes that are about to or already gone kaput (all less than 60k on the odo) in the Hyderabad used car market.

The GTI's are demanding a huge value proposition with depreciation not being considered anywhere in the country currently owing to aforementioned reasons and literally impossible to find a fine example south of 17 lakhs figure.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Spotted two 190Es on the weekend. The red car appears to be the donor vehicle, while the white one is getting prepped. Seemed to have fresh white paint.

The 60 Series of this iconic off-roader was built between 1980 and 1992. The Land Cruiser remains one of the most popular off-roaders ever built. Today, the J300 Series commands a 4-year waiting period globally.

Also, is that Mazda MX3 parked behind the 190Es ever used? It's been in the same spot for years, albeit washed and cleaned regularly.

Re: Pics: Imports gathering dust in India

Thought it was a Passat. A closer look yielded that this was the very car that was ridiculed as Ferdinand Piech’s folly. This VW Phaeton has certainly seen much better days. Parked in Sikanderpur market.

I have never understood why cars like these are parked on the roadside. The car shows it is registered to a real estate developer and I am sure they will have some enclosed property were they can park the vehicle.

An Audi A7 with its air suspension busted and it went so low down! On looking at the front from a distance, it looked like an R8.

The car is standing at Goregaon but looks like it's there for restoration.

How old are these images? If I am not mistaken, that Volvo wagon was seen in Chennai over the weekend looking fresh and running. Unless of course, there's another TN reg car in the same blue.
