This happened on NH-6 popularly known as "Bombay Road" in the morning at around 0930 hrs. Last heard the lady was in critical care at a Kolkata hospital.
The car, a Ferrari California T, has been written off.

Re: Supercars & Imports : Kolkata

So it finally happened. The california T was involved in a massive crash on the outskirts of Kolkata. From what I could gather on the net, the driver is no more and the passenger, a 20year old kid, is fighting for his life.

The group (Club GT) meanwhile has taken down its page on facebook I think and has gone completely silent. I would wager to say one of the gopros, either on that car or on the other cars would have caught the incident.

There are multiple videos of these guys doing well over 240ks on the expressways in and around Kolkata. I have always watched all those videos with interest but always felt somewhere in the back of my mind that they should have been more careful on public roads. Public road arent designed with such speeds in mind and every time you decide to feel adventurous your are risking not only your life but innocent people in the are as well. Granted, Kolkata doesnt have a track where you can utilise the full potential of these beasts, but that is no excuse to keep blasting around in fancy cars to become famous on the internet!

God knows even I have done stupid things while being behind the wheel, but everyone of us needs to be more careful.

However, I could not find a mention anywhere of how the accident occurred.

Speeding vehicle hit a divider while approaching a bridge
A man was on Sunday killed and his friend seriously injured when the sports car they were travelling in hit a divider and turned turtle at Domjur area of Howrah district.
The vehicle, which was coming at a high speed from Dankuni, hit the divider while approaching a bridge on National Highway 6 at Domjur, an hour’s drive from Kolkata, and landed upside down on the ground with a thud, a senior police officer said.

What a horrendous piece of driving. At times I feel, in India we simply don't deserve these high-end vehicles on our roads, partly because of the roads that we have and partly because of the screwballs that drive these vehicles.

When would we realize and respect - great power comes with even greater responsibilities. And driving like crazy just because you can do so by mere pressing of your accelerator is certainly not a responsible thing.

As I said, horrendous state of affairs.

Re: Supercars & Imports : Kolkata

Hi ,

I am feeling extremely sad to see this Kolkata crash. Good lives are lost and it has once again proved that no car is safe , no matter how safe the manufacturer's claims it to be. Something needs to be done for sure. It's sad that you buy your dream car and it ends your life. You are bound to drive them fast if they are capable of such high speeds . If such high speeds are not safe on public roads then why those cars are designed for such speeds. And why they are allowed to be driven on public roads. All enthusiast are going to hate this but I suggest as below. Concerned authorities should set some rules.

1) Such cars should be driven only on racing tracks , otherwise should be installed with some speed limiter. Govt should take initiative to build such tracks in every big city.
2) The owners / drivers should undergo a compulsory professional training and should be issued a special licence / certificate.

regards

Re: Supercar & Import Crashes in India

Yes, This car was part of the Club GT (Kolkata's Super Car Club) Sunday drive. A friend of mine is part of the group (but wasn't part of this particular drive) mentioned that Mr. Shibaji was one of the more careful drivers of the group and it was an unfortunate accident. This is what the official statement says:

Quote:
The carriageway narrows a little at the mouth of the flyover on NH6 or Bombay Road. One of the drivers in the convoy, who was behind Roy, said a truck had suddenly changed lanes and moved to the right without switching on its indicator lights.

"Had the truck not switched lanes, Shibaji would not have had any trouble. But with the truck moving to the right, he was forced to swerve further right and crashed into the parapet," he said.
Quote:
“Shibaji owns a Jaguar F Type but on Sunday he was driving my Ferrari as he was planning to buy it. He was test-driving it for a few days. Shibaji had started the drive with his son Shreyan, but on our way back, our friend Adarsh Suarana’s daughter Aashna hopped into the Ferrari. Adarsh was driving the BMW i8 and was just ahead of Shibaji,” said Suresh Tolani, owner of a popular sari store at Sudder Street and a super-car enthusiast.

Actually when this happened, it was being driven at around ~120KMPH.
It's an unfortunate accident.

A tragic accident. My condolences to his family. May God bless his soul. Here's a Telegraph article with more details - link.

See this image from thehindu.com. Looks like the car immediately activated its rollover protection (two chrome bars behind the seats):

Are you kidding me? The only thing that needs to be done is, everyone needs to drive safer. Clearly, someone was at fault here - either the alleged trucker or the Ferrari driver. But it's not the cars fault.

A Hyundai Verna can also cross 200 kmph. Sure doesn't mean you should do it!

This is the only part of your post that I agree with. All owners of Supercars & Superbikes must go through specialised training & track courses.

Re: Fatal Ferrari California accident in Kolkata

Indeed a sad happening, discussions about how it could have been avoided will go on.

A small suggestion which will be easy to implement, is to redesign the pipe which runs over the side guard wall of flyovers and bridges. in this instance a news report said that the pipe pierced the bonnet ,windshield, airbags and the chest of the driver.
Had the pipe been bent down and grounded into the ground before the guard wall,it wud not have run into the car as it happeneded in this case.
A simple relook at the start and end design of the pipe will help in enhancing safety to a great extent.
