McLaren to enter India; official price announcement next week

After lots of speculation, McLaren has finally entered the Indian market officially, prospective customers being contacted. Price announcement for cars most likely next week!

Don’t know if the region selection for India was available earlier in the configurator, it is visible now though.

Well this is great news! I am a 100% sure that the Indian Market was not available as an option (owing to most of my time being spent on configurators :P).

I'm very sure McLaren are going to find a high amount of interest in their products, especially from F1 fans, considering how much Lando, Carlos & Ricciardo have done to promote the brand.

Even amongst the actual owners, I believe Ferrari & Lamborghini might be soon looking at reduced sales numbers, since McLaren brings a very new and fresh product line-up.

Now the only thing is that these cars should be reliable in Indian Conditions.

Re: McLaren to enter India; official price announcement next week

I don't think they will do all that well here.

Firstly, the market is tough and hasn't really grown much over the last five years or so, specifically the supercar space. Most of the luxury "lifestyle buys" has been absorbed by Lamborghini Urus and the rest by Mercedes and their AMG line-up. Even with Lamborghini, how many Aventadors have they managed to sell last 2-3 years?

The number of people who are willing to walk into a Ferrari showroom and actually order one is still pretty miniscule, about 15 cars per year. Granted, that is far ahead of what the situation was at the start of 2000s, but still, it is a very hesitant buy outside of the core enthusiast group.

The super-rich would obviously love to be seen in a supercar, but the terrible road infra, the low height, the lack of servicing and in general the very high ticket price (north of 5 crores), makes them an event buy whenever it happens. People are still not buying these like they buy a new Ghost or a Bentayga.

Indian supercar market is smaller than places like Thailand and without an SUV, McLaren will find it tough to sell more than 10 cars per year.

And lastly, the super rich love to be pampered and made to feel special. This does not happen much in India because the market is so small that most supercar manufacturers are loathe to spend too much to create large showrooms, event days, track days, luxury drives etc.

There are Ferrari enthusiasts but a section of the superrich for example want the car for the glitz and glamour. Here in the India showrooms close without warning, service centres close down and unless you know your cars and a quality independent, people usually sell off their cars and dont bother getting into another difficult supercar.

Thats why stuff like G63 sells by the bucketloads.

McLaren’s India launch is now confirmed and just around the corner. Autocar India did review the McLaren 720s in India.

The car has been kindly loaned to Autocar by Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India.

720s does 0-100kph in just 2.9sec and has a top speed of 341kph

Quote:
Verdict and expected price:

The lasting impression from this short drive is the matter-of-fact way in which the 720S serves up its performance. It won’t break into a sweat (and neither will the driver) when asked to keep up with a Ferrari F8. It rides better, doesn’t feel as edgy and hence is easier to handle too. So flawless is the 720S to drive that the driving experience feels a bit too clinical. At an estimated price of around Rs 4 crore (ex-showroom), is it a worthy rival to a F8 Tributo or a Lamborghini Huracán Evo then? Certainly. It won’t engage you as emotionally but will hook you with its engineering brilliance. Bring it on, McLaren.

AFAIK, Infinity Cars which also handles Lamborghini & Rolls Royce will be dealer principal in Mumbai. I imagine the McLaren dealership opens up its doors right next to Lamborghini Mumbai. Wouldn’t that be a sight to behold, then?

Looks like Bhushan paid the remaining of Kartik's remuneration in the form of a car and also managed to get a tax cut for it!

McLaren could also announce the launch of the Artura hybrid supercar in the Indian market on November 17. It’s the brand’s latest offering and is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 paired with an electric motor. It has a combined output of 671 BHP @ 7,500 rpm and 720 Nm @ 2,250 rpm.
