Mercedes-Benz is all set to launch the SL55 AMG in India on June 22, 2023.



The SL is Mercedes's flagship convertible. It is currently in its seventh generation and will be imported into India as a completely built unit (CBU).



The Mercedes-AMG SL55 is a 2-door sports car that comes with a retractable fabric roof. It features aggressive yet stylish triangular headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights and a low-slung Panamericana grille.



The rear fascia comprises a set of sleek LED taillights that sit flush with the bodywork. This being the hot AMG version, it gets quad exhausts and sporty alloy wheels.

Powering the SL55 is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that makes 471 BHP and 700 Nm. The engine is mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system. It is also the first roadster to get rear-axle steering as standard.

Mercedes-AMG SL55 Roadster launched at Rs 2.35 crore

Mercedes-Benz has launched the AMG SL55 Roadster in India at a price of Rs 2.35 crore (ex-showroom). The 7th generation SL will be imported into the country via the CBU route.



The Mercedes-AMG SL55 is a 2-door convertible that comes with a retractable fabric roof. The roof can be opened or closed in 15 seconds at speeds of up to 60 km/h. The car features aggressive yet stylish triangular headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights and a low-slung Panamericana grille.

The rear fascia comprises a set of sleek LED taillights that sit flush with the bodywork and an adjustable spoiler. This being the hot AMG version, it gets quad exhausts and rides on 20-inch alloy wheels as standard.

Inside, the SL55 comes with AMG performance seats with Alcantara upholstery and carbon fibre trim. The roadster is equipped with an 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting and a head-up display.

Powering the SL55 is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that makes 469 BHP and 700 Nm. The engine is mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system. It is also the first roadster to get rear-axle steering as standard. Mercedes claims a 0-100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 295 km/h.

Would serve as a great halo car for Mercedes India. The market for the large luxury touring cars has been shrinking globally. Nonetheless, Mercedes has launched their latest generation in India where the market is even more less. After all, being a CBU doesn't take much effort. Don't know the exact reason why the rich old people have move away from these cars.

With this generation, I have heard that Mercedes finally made the car much more comfortable from the previous generation. However, I still don't think it will reignite the excitement in this market. Cars like the SL and M8 have been struggling to sell everywhere.

All that aside, looks like a fantastic launch event paying tribute to their older models. Especially that R230 SL looks so good. Also, love to see such good examples of W121, R107, R129. Dream to own one someday

The moment you realise this is cheaper than the base diesel G Wagon(leave alone the AMG)

Not rich, but old and will not look at this simply because when someone is spending so much, one will like to choose the best in that segment. Look at this screen size and steering. Don't you feel it's out of place for such a car? They are planting the same 15-20-inch tablets across the models. It doesn't work that way.




Carrera-S will be far more engaging over this any day. Pity we don't get 4S variants here.

Unfortunately, such models from MB don't excite actual buyers. G is different; people are crazy. It has such a cult following, especially in this part (a lot of Punjabi songs are one reason ).

Diesel or AMG, most won't notice the difference. Diesel has gone up in price but, at the same time, is now well-loaded as standard, and the options are very reasonable, unlike past.

That's true and a very valid point. SL would be like a barge compared to the 911. If I were to buy one in this segment, would get the Boxster GTS without second thoughts. For the 911, would get the coupe over the cabriolet. However, I feel buying used is the way better option here. An R230 SL or a 987.2 boxster offers so much fun for the current price.

I mean I'm in no financial position to afford a car that goes for around 2.9 Crore On-road here in Bangalore (and that's without options) but if I had that kind of money to throw around on a Convertible I'd rather go for something else.

A 718 Spyder for 2.2 Crore (4.0L NA Flat 6, 414hp/430nm) or 911 Carrera S Cabriolet for 2.52 Crore (3.0L Twin Turbo Flat 6, 444hp/530nm) would easily fit within budget and if you absolutely want a V8 then there's always the gorgeous Jaguar F-Type R-Dynamic Convertible for 1.94 Crore with the same Jaguar/Land Rover Supercharged 5.0L V8 from the SVR model but downtuned to 444hp/580nm compared to 567hp/700nm on the full fat SVR. (I mean you save almost a crore with the Jag over the SL55 AMG, so what's wrong with spending some money on mods to bring the power up to SVR spec )
