Mouthwatering pictures of the 997, and in a great house too. I see some other German cars, though the Santro looks woefully out of place there.

That's nasty. You should get your M3 a front bra for the high-speed expressway runs.

Pulled in to the petrol pump to fill up the ///M yesterday and what do I see in front of me...?!

Got out and had a nice chat with the owner, it felt great meeting a fellow ///M-er!

Oddly enough, I feel the M3 is a total sleeper here and the M5 probably even more so. That's one of the best things about the car to my mind, it affords a certain anonymity that something more exotic wouldn't.

You won't believe the number of passers-by, drivers, etc that I've overheard talking about the car and, invariably, one will be telling the other that it's JUST a BMW!

Really AM, would you trade your M3 for an M5? I know I wouldn't!

Interesting thing about this particular M5, it had an after-market box on the back, I think it was an Eisenmann, not sure. The pipes were definitely wider diameter than stock.

Youre right kbk,

This M5 has an aftermarket Einesmann exhaust system. The car sounds awesome at full revvs.

I wouldn't either, I have been looking to acquire a Red M3 or a Carrera 4s . Cant decide between the two

Which brings to my mind , what is your take on modding the car? I placed an order for a 09 M3 and it should be delivered by April end and I have a host of mods already researched for.

Are you , too , wanting to make that sweet ride growl louder/go faster?

Well, they will be very similar performance-wise, but the character of the two cars is completely different. The M3 is a totally practical vehicle that happens to be seriously quick and a real hoot to drive. The C4S is more about unadulterated driving pleasure. Here are some things to consider:

M3 Plusses:
Can comfortably seat 4 adults with luggage
Ride is very comfortable in comfort mode (if you have chosen EDC option)
Available locally, service also available locally
Very quick, great handling and lively rear end!
Ground clearance is quite good for a sports car
Does not attract too much attention (this may be a minus for some!)

M3 Minuses:
Drinks fuel (average around 4.5 Km/L combined)

C4S Plusses:
Dynamically brilliant
Very quick
Should give better mileage than M3

C4S Minuses:
Can only seat two adults with a small amount of luggage
Ground clearance can be an issue over bad roads and big speed breakers
Service quality is a question mark for some
Will attract attention, it is, after all, a Porsche! (Some would say it's a plus)

So if you're not concerned with practicality and just want a really nice car for occasional use, the Porsche is a great fit. (I would personally look at the Carrera S and not the C4S, if I was buying the car. Something about RWD being more fun and also lighter!). If, on the other hand, you want a car that will be more usable, more of the time and just as quick look at the M3!

Thanks for those, R. I had seen one of the threads, not the review.

One thing I will say I have sometimes felt is that the exhaust note is not aggressive enough on the M3, especially inside the car. To that end an after-market silencer may be a decent mod. I'm all for performance and not so much for the "show" of things though, so I didn't really feel it was worth getting a (quite expensive) Eisenmann exhaust that didn't really add any performance, but just made a more aggressive sound. In addition, I believe the Eisenmann box requires that you cut your OE exhaust pipes just before the silencer and then weld the Eisenmann box to them, which I did not want to do either. There are a few more easy to do mods such as custom air intakes and things, which I am not so convinced about either. For the most part I'd say the car doesn't really need any mods. Now if you were to add a blower to the car, maybe that would be a worthwhile mod!

Edit: One thing I forgot to add! I was once told by a cop that my silencer had a problem and that I should get it fixed! So from the outside apparently the stock exhaust IS loud enough!
