Actually, I am looking for a V12 engine, hence I chose S600. I am already driving a V8, 360 bhp, looking forward to tame more horses!!

A W140 S280 seen at Prabhadevi in a pitiable state.

The KING of all cars is the W140 Mercedes. I've never owned one but lusted after them for years.

I don't think they're the best cars to own in Bombay given their size and horrific fuel consumption figures. But given the right roads, no car commands the same road presence or has ever been as well engineered.

Where in Prabhadevi? There used to a 1st Gen W140 (SEL lettering) in the lane behind Prabhadevi telephone exchange. Light blue in color, last saw it a year back or so.

I saw this one in the lane of the exchange, just outside the really tall building (Rameshwaram) that is there.

Rameshwaram is near the VSNL/Tata office, near the beach. Are you talking of Vision Crest? (40+ storeys). Nevertheless both places are nearby, I'll have a look!

Sad to see such an iconic car being wasted. Badged an S500 on the boot and had a V12 logo on the left front fender.

The above Mercedes is parked in Mahim, Bombay on tulsi pipe road. The condition seems to be poorly maintained.

Sucks to see such a beautiful beast being completely neglected. But then, it's too complex for anyone to attempt a rebuild. The mechanically-simpler W126 has a lot of fans and is relatively easier to restore. But such W140s will never see the light of day again.

I think this is applicable to the current lot of European cars too. They are too (electronically) complicated for anyone to be driving them 2 - 3 decades from now. Heck, they surely aren't built to last more than 10 - 15 years.

Imagine the perils of restoring a modern Euro with 2 - 3 kilometers of wiring length, dual-clutch transmissions, high pressure fuel injection systems....or an air-conditioner with like 50 sensors . Today's luxury cars are built to die in a decade.

Well, this statement is slowly being applicable to our regular cars too. Manufacturers are slowly adding complex technologies to our cars. They are replacing simple components with complicated ones. Hoards of sensors, circuit boards, on-board computers and the likes. These are perfect recipes to drill a big hole (relatively speaking) in our pocket if any one fails. And worst part, they are difficult/impossible to repair.

Suppose the integrated DRLs in one headlight conks off or even one LED fails, we have to replace the whole headlight. Spending 10k for a projector headlamp when we could have managed with a 10 rupee parking bulb had it been a normal headlamp. Similarly, a smart key costs 15-20k while the regular key used to cost 2-3k for OEM ones.

Re: Pics : Mercedes S500 and S600 (W140)

I live across a collector yard in Chennai. An S280 Jap spec in White on Blue and a S600 in Blue on Black that needs some work, besides a mint E46 320i are lying in front of my window.
Hope I can pick the E46 or the S280, both run and are in good order.

There are about 4 American muscle cars from the late 60's to early 70's there too in various states of restoration.

There are about 50 cars waiting for restoration, dreamland indeed.
