Shelby 1962 replica crashes in Kolkata ?

Can anyone find out a little more about this ? A friend just called me and he said a blue Shelby 1962 crashed on the way to Kolaghat.

Front end damaged, alloys totalled.

Aren't replicas not allowed in India? How did they manage to import the kit? any details.

Nitrous Anna there is a vast difference between the Caterham and The Ac Cobra bodies. The Caterham is safe and is in Bombay. This is in Kolkata. I believe the owner had brought the body from America and the mechanicals were locally sourced and just a few parts imported.

This was the only replica of the Ac Cobra in India. I am sure the owner can get it fixed.

I wonder who told you that Replicas are not allowed in India. One way is,You can import a Body in Peices and use a Local chasis and engine. The meters and everything else can be brought ( Lamborghini countach, Ac Cobra). The second way is you build everything Localy itself. Useing the Design drawings and other literature (Lotus 7/Caterham).

@speedy : There was nothing localy sourced in this car, Everything was imported (dont ask me how and how was it registered) and the car was seriously damaged.

@Speedy - I always thought replicas were not allowed in India, due to copyright infringement issues. If you manufacture your own chassis how do you get it registered, probably by greasing some palms but how hard is it.

Even if you import the kit in parts how much import duty is charged?

If building a kit car in India was possible I would be very interested in it.

I heard the guy used a Bettle chassis for it. The body was imported and the engine had indian and imported components. I guess i was wrongly informed..

You have them dime a dozen abroad. I believe if you have a one off then there is no issues. My friend has built a car( Caterham/ Lotus 7) replica. He bought and used a 118NE chasis and engine plates for the car. There was no greasing of palms involved. The car was only tranfered to his name and whatever taxes were involved was cleared.

I would have to check on that. It would depend on weather it is brought in as personal item or normal channel.

It is very possible. Will discuss further when we talk.
