The speedcams are no longer operational, there was only one on the opposite side carriageway. I take this stretch at 70-80kmph everyday, no challans till date.

The cameras are only for surveillance now for insurance claims of which there are too many on this stretch.

Ofcourse over speeding is one of the major factors, but the design of the road might also be a part culprit here.

The turn is not sudden unless you are doing speeds over 150 kmph, and there are 8 rumble strips on the stretch of 1.2 km. Unless someone if absolutely retarded or love their bones being broken, they wouldn't do over 100 kmph on the stretch. The design has no play with how dumb people are.

I have friends who have taken this stretch at 120kmph on cars/bikes before the rumble strips and can affirm you have to be doing over 150kmph or somebody coming the wrong way, which did happen to a friend that you would crash into the barrier.

Saw these pictures of a Porsche 718 boxter from Mumbai on Instagram.

Re: Supercar & Import Crashes in India

Very suspicious circumstances to say the least !

According to WhatsApp forward and a YouTube video put up by the owner; Cyclone Tauktae opened the roof off this 718, raised the spoiler and the water caused "errors on the dashboard". So when the owner turned the car on to raise the roof again to prevent the interior from getting soaked, the car autonomously revved forward and crashed into the building it's parked in. No CCTV of when this 718 decided to act like a decepticon.

Some observations on pure common sense, I am neither an exotic car owner nor from an automotive engineering background:

* How does a cyclonic condition cause a Porsche to lower its roof especially on a car that's turned off and locked ?

* Assuming electronic issues raised the spoiler, turning the car on, it will turn over in P or N and the gear lever is mechanical and in control of the owner... how did it fall in gear and "rev forward". Secondly granting the drive by wire error and the engine revved, shouldn't it rev in P or N ? How did the handbrake lower ? Why was the handbrake lowered ? The roof can be raised in ACC on as well without turning the car over.

* That impact looks pretty high speed into a pillar.

No way discrediting the ordeal the poor owner faces, however it does throw up some food for thought especially in lockdown

If I put on my devil's advocate hat : prima facie , crying youtube video etc looks like a desperate attempt to add credibility to a lie, inorder to help with insurance claim.

However, nothing can be proved or disproved since there is no CCTV evidence. Upto the insurance company's surveyor.

This is the funniest explanation for a crash I’ve come across in a long time. Crashes are usually blamed on a scapegoat ‘driver’ or an imaginary dog crossing the road but this man here took it to a whole different level and blamed it on the cyclone.

Looks like he’s trying to finesse the system to claim insurance. It’ll be interesting to see where this ends up. *grabs pop corn*

Endless possibilities. Perhaps motivated by 'return to invoice' insurance claim or a plug of his company plastered on the side, either way the intended effect is there.

He's a viral WhatsApp forward.

As they say, no such thing as bad publicity.

In lighter vein, can imagine the cyclone's expression on being framed for vehicle damage...

Re: Supercar & Import Crashes in India

A lot of things can happen in commotion. Possibly, the convertible top was already off or because of some reasons it got opened (high wind/ not locked fully previously?), and while trying to close, the driver accidentally puts it into the gear, maybe trying to check if it works in Neutral/ Parking.

He should get the claim irrespective, as insurance companies also included self-damages.

Re: Supercar & Import Crashes in India

In many ways this seems like a complete setup. Most of the recent convertibles can drop the roof through keyfob. He claims car 'Revved forward' and caused the collision. The CCTV footage shows the car carefully taking right turn and then going full swing into the wall. This looks like a purposeful effort to avoid rear end collision with the car parked in front. If car accelerated as per his claims, car should have rammed into the car in front. Also Who would carry a camera gear to check out their car in the rain.

In the first video he himself claims it looks like a total loss, in that case the insurance company will have to pay the amount to the owner. Eitherways intentional stunt or not, he is getting the publicity and sympathy.

Re: Supercar & Import Crashes in India

I looked at the video posted. My gut feel is that the video looks edited and spliced. There are many people coming in and out of the building and also people moving around the Porsche. But the sequences are cut off, and people / objects appear on one screen and vanish in the next. I see a motorcycle arriving and departing, a person moving the green trash can towards the door, people entering and leaving through the main door.

There are people always around the Porsche, so it does not look like the car was left on its own and no one noticed anything off.

Also the wind speed is not that forceful to move the roof. From the frames, I can see the green dustbin and a motor cycle standing perfectly still with no movement. If the gale winds were strong the dustbin would have rolled off on its own.

I can't really see clearly but when the convertible top is lowered, there is someone moving in the car. But I can't be sure.

As other forum members have commented, this feels staged.

Also rear spoiler can't be activated manually, unlike what the owner is claiming. He cannot keep it closed as the spoiler activation is controlled by the ECU. Spoiler looks OEM and not the TECHART which is installed on the 718 as aftermarket. TECHART spoilers are manual as the wiring is cut and ECU is remapped

This is drama worthy though.

Re: Supercar & Import Crashes in India

The response of the owner after seeing the car crash into the pillar is like nothing happened!! If I see my own car crashing, I will surely be holding my head and my mouth gaping.

Even if the system fault is to be believed, if the driver could press the brake pedal and reverse, while shifting to D and turning the steering he must have forgotten to press the brake pedal and it crashed into the pillar.

Re: Supercar & Import Crashes in India

It looks like a genuine mishap to me. It's too tight a space to stage a crash for insurance fraud and it's not such a major crash for a mid engined car. Maybe the water in the footwell caused kickdown short circuit or something of that sort.

Re: Supercar & Import Crashes in India

Here's a Maserati GranTurismo (S?) lying in a plot of land in Bangalore which used to be a Bosch service center earlier. Supposedly this is the one that was originally owned by music maestro Harris Jayaraj in Chennai.

He says the start of the video is sped up, because the lights were on without much else happening for several minutes. You can also see the timestamp fast forwarding.

It's not the wind that moved the roof, but an electronic fault that caused the operation.

The wind might have aided in getting water into areas or the electricals that normal rainfall (or even a factory shower test) would not manage to do so.

As for the rear lights coming on on their own... that is also believable. It happens on my Vento even when it is not raining

This is the reflection of something above in the rear window, as it folds down.

Absolutely.

Seems just more like the driver's foot placement got confused a bit.

What I'd like to know is how familiar the driver was with this car... that would say a lot.

Reminds me of this Lamborghini valet accident, where I'm 99% sure the wrong pedal was pressed because of the crazy pedal layout in the Gallardo:

Interesting thought!

However, I'd imagine there's a lot of ECU cross-checking done to safely enable kickdown (eg. cross-checking that the Throttle Position Sensor is also in-range).

Given that the car moved in reverse very slowly, and then starts out forward very slowly as well -- this seems more like human error.
