Folks I see a lot of imports out there have suspected fudged papers and duty evasion being one of the most common laws broken. Through this thread I invite insights, info, experience, and knowledge that can come handy in the pruchase process and decision making to fellow members and genuine folks wanting peace of mind and not pieces of them :).
My experience:
I have found many times all markings are missing (chassis plate/serial number etc). I have found date of manufacture to be different on the books and car in question is much older. GTO mentions that the reverse (newer car older papers) too is done which is extremely detremental to future reselling so I don't know if that is the case. I have heard of cases where people have taken out their old cars for repair andbrought in newer ones!?
I have found hand written duty entries!! on RC books.
Facts: Bill of Entries have always been issued when cars come in to the country since many decades, I have seen a few and they have all the details of duty/year etc but some sellers claim that the same is not available, crappy photocopies, and flimsy excuses i.e don't worry DRI/customs does not open cases which are 5 years and older!! Any fine print on this?
I have been told informally that cases from anytime can be opened and people have got notices after 5 years too but don't know if that holds true as well?
