@Doc: Dentist cum Automobile Electronics expert. Whatta combination!

The XC90 does look humongous but sure would be a breeze to drive.

Just a small query, is a FWD normally or fulltime AWD.

This is called dual zone climate control. Search the forum for dual zone/Multi Zone climate control.

Service costs is a different issue altogether!

Thanks MC. The drive is biased towards the front wheels, with lesser power (@30% IIRC) to the rear wheels. The ratio changes when the front wheels start losing traction or when DSTC needs to intervene.

That's right. The XC90 has multi-zone climate control.

Good SUV, but honestly outclassed in the price stratosphere that it competes in. The XC would make for a heck of a used buy though. Volvo passenger cars depreciate like stink...I wouldn't be surprised to see 3 year old examples hitting the market for 65 - 70% less (especially the guzzling petrols).

Thoroughly enjoyed reading your writeup, SS-Traveller. WRT the problem & solution, man....sometimes it's the simplest things, eh doc?

Thanks, GTO. It felt very good to find a solution that Volvo engineers couldn't figure out!

Nice writeup SST! The 4.4 litre V8 is made in Japan by Yamaha IIRC.

Thank you, Sid. This is the info I could find on the engine and drivetrain of the XC90. Volvo B8444S engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Quote:
The B8444S is a V8 automobile engine developed by Yamaha Motor Corporation for Volvo Cars. It is built in Japan and based on Volvo designs.Volvo began offering a 4.4 L V8 engine in its large P2 platform automobiles in 2005. It was initially offered in the Volvo XC90 SUV. It is available on the Volvo S80 and mated to a six speed Aisin Seiki transmission of Japan also with a Swedish Haldex all wheel drive system AWD. The 4.4 L V8 Volvo engine is built by Yamaha in Japan under Volvo design and specifications.

The engine is unique in Ford's wide range of V8 engines in that it is designed for transverse use and has a V6-like 60° bank angle. Officials of all three companies involved insist that the Volvo V8 is not related to the SHO engine.

As a Volvo V8, this new engine uses the similar Volvo engine naming system. The engine is called the Volvo B8444S. B being for Bensin (petrol), 8 for the number of cylinders, 4.4 for the total displacement of the engine and the last 4 for the number of valves per cylinder. This engine also uses original Volvo parts.

The engine is a 4.4 L aluminum DOHC V8 which produces 315 PS (232 kW; 311 hp) and 440 N·m (325 lb·ft). It has a 60 degree cylinder bank. The engine block and heads are cast from aluminium reducing its weight to a light 418 lbs.

^^^ Even I wondered - there's Volvo's design, Ford's inputs and Yamaha's manufacturing. And Ford uses the same engine too.

There is a 5-cyl diesel engine option available too. Volvo XC90 Engines ? Diesel, Petrol Engines.

The rear parking sensors can be switched off for when you are towing a trailer or a caravan, by the way

But why would they need sensors inside the car if its locked? Also the reduced level of security could take care of this "housefly" issues right?

That's right. Even the front parking sensors are turned off.

Parked car + window glass left down by mistake + in-cabin motion sensor = added safety. Yes the reduced security setting does turn off the sensors, but after every driving cycle the system resets to full security - and it's better to get rid of the flies than leave the car on reduced security all the time.

Our desi "Autocop" systems also have an in-cabin motion sensor. Primary purpose : To detect (thief) movement in a locked car. They even activate if someone breaks a window.

Don't know about this model, but the newer Volvos come with Heartbit sensors inside the cabin. So if car was locked and somehow if somebody manages to get into car, the heart bit sensor will pick that up and the red light will glow on the edge of car key. As per Volvo, it is an added security if the car is parked in remote parking garages or in dark.
