The RE Classic 500 OTR Delhi is at - 1.5L

Now if HD with a Twin 750 and 60-70 Nm of Torque retails at 4.5L OTR (taking the ex-showroom to be 4L) how on earth would it dent RE sales ?

Please bear in mind that the RE Classic 500 in itself has 41.3 Nm of Torque available right from as low as 4000 RPM.

So I would assume that the lot paying 3L more for a cylinder, 20 odd Nm of Torque (no one has a clue on the HD BHP figures) and the HD TAG would be making a wrong call.

Now the other thing that could happen (sadly I don't think this will happen before 2013, got a friend working with RE who passed on this information) is,

RE launch a Twin (parallel) producing 800 odd CC, 70-75 Nm Torque, 50 odd BHP and price it @ 2.8 - 3L Ex-Showroom.

Now what we get at 3.5 OTR is -

A Bonneville lookalike (a twin RE is the closest thing that I can imagine to the Bonny) with decent figures at half the price of a Bonny or the Super Low.

My word - RE bring on the RE Twin !! - This would be pure Nirvana.

They had an interceptor (parallel twin) which was made outta UK long ago, so why is RE now so hesitant to bring out a parallel twin after all these players have entered the market is a million $ question by itself?
Is the marketing division asleep or Is the R&D not capable enough to do this? or Is the Production line cannot handle it?

Believe the HD folks are also working out on a 500CC specific for Indian market along with the 750CC!!! How much of this statement is true needs to be verified. Believe they did have a mouth watering price tag of 250K that they were aiming to achieve. Would you be aware of such a thing happening? In my humble opinion believe this should give RE if at all this is true.

It took them ages to move from CI to UCE, single to twin will take them half a century. LOL

Marketing cannot play a role till RE lays out a development plan.

Capability for a parallel twin with the amount that would go in the R&D is something that I surely doubt.

RE it seems is more than Happy with the sales of the RE Classic, it has done wonders for them since it's inception in Nov 2009.

Yeah RE was doing a sleeping beauty resting on its laurels of being the only motorcycle manufacturer that lasted in production for 50 years or something. Well, they might have woken up now for sure and the Classic is testimony to that. Only problem - production has not caught up. I've known scores of people who've moved to other bikes because of the waiting period.

And sorry, not looking forward to the RE twin or whatever - double the oil-leaks and other associated problems.

At the end of the day if I have to shell out 2 or 3 or 4.. lacs more than a RE for either a Triumph or a HD, I would prefer to do that. I am passionate about biking, but I also think with my head and not my heart- Reliability is still important and I personally cant accept a bike that is still 'work in progress' after 50 odd years.

I am sure there are lots of guys like me who have always fancied to buy a 'new' classic bike in India (RE was the only option all these years), but took 2 steps back when we hear about all the niggles even to this day on RE. Whereas both Triumph & HD put in a lot of work to retain their classic looks but inject new technology and more importantly use durable parts and give quality control serious weightage. So if we are going to have more options from those manufacturers like Shrini said, it is definitely something worth waiting for.

Before the invasion of Jap bikes, triumphs were even then known to be very reliable & comfortable bikes to ride, while HD with all their heritage & brand name etc still went back to the drawing board in the early 90s and all their bikes are reliable these days.
