Neat comparo, Doc, will be very useful for people like me!

The bad tank range would be a real downer on the Duke, a deal breaker. But the pricing, wow, that much of a difference?

Apart from the 390, have any of the others been confirmed (even somewhat) for India soon? Wonder what happened to Yamaha and Suzuki, are they not interested in this growing segment?

Another aspect to think about, which brand(s) will offer good service backup. Have heard good things about all 3- Honda, Bajaj/KTM and Bajaj/Kawasaki service support for their existing bikes (CBR 250R, N250 and the D200). Hope that continues with the new launches.

4 Lacs for Ninja 300 makes it least value for money considering that 650 retails for a lakh and change more. But from the reviews so far it seems like this would be a very nice bike for our conditions. If they can price it the same as 250R then I might consider it as well.

On the same note 2.2 Lacs for 390 with ABS is going to be one hell of a bargain.

I strongly doubt it.

The 250r is already near about 3.5 lacs on the road. The 300 is a lot more bike than the 250r. Its not simply a replacement - its a big step up. Plus it has ABS.

The 650 (save for the weak brakes plaguing it) was always more VFM than the 250.

I want a 390 Adventure first bro. The costlier a bike is, the more careful you are with it, and that kind of negates the fun factor. Sort of like the diference betwen a jeep and a 25 lac SUV. And from whatever I have heard, the 690 if it ever comes, will be upward of 8 lacs.

Wow 800K is a bit too much for a thumper, how much would the Beemers retail for then? The Entry level 650? But the cherry for KTM is its kerb weight of only 150 Kilos. Which means it will be a super dirt basher. When will the 390 be let out of the cages? Any inclinations on the costing?
Apologies if am asking you too much

Internationally, the KTMs have been one of the few marques more pricy than the Beemers. So yes, without Indian involvement, and our really weak exchange, the 690 on its own as an import will be upward of 8 lacs. This is from the horse's mouth incidentally.

The 390 any day now the testers should be ready. Expect launch some time in June or July as things stand today. Just pre monsoon. What fun!

Re: *Strong Rumour* : KTM Duke 690 around Diwali

I rode a brand new 690 Duke last month at Jim Aim Motorcycles in Hedingham. They have the largest dealership of KTM bikes in the UK. Although my ride was only for around 20 miles around a little village with a 30 mph speed limit, I could do short bursts of speed in the twisting roads. It is very eager, the exhaust note is a sweet baaaaaarrrrrrrrrp every time you raise the throttle, and it lunges forward like a beast. Am sure it can do around 200 kph, but I could touch only 56 mph (just above 80 kmph or so). Because it had clocked only about 50 miles (they don't give bikes for test ride before they have clocked 250 miles), my right hand was going numb after every five minutes with vibrations.

The cycle parts are way better than you find on the 200, especially the brake pedal, which could be felt (unlike on the 200, where my boot always slips).

Not for pillion again, and now, after doing this ride, am tempted to go for the 390 after all. Lighter and lightning fast it will be.

Here's a pic. All this was possible thanks to Ian Aim, who used to work earlier with us in India and now joined his family business. His dad Jim Aim was a motocross champion in the 50s and 60s. Memorable day for me.

This aspect should definitely be addressed by Bajaj-KTM. 225-250 kms tank range is really pathetic. Anything less than 400 kms to a tankful is very poor for a bike used for touring - as many 390s will be. This one factor if taken care of will ensure the Duke kills the other two on price, everything else being near equal.
Bajaj/KTM are smarter though. I expect the larger tanks to come with the now *very strong* possibility of the 390 adventure late next year or early 2014.

Mod Note : This thread is being closed, until there is concrete information of the 690 being launched. Thanks

KTM has somehow managed to retain the family look amongst all their bikes. Even rural India will not have a problem in identifying a KTM be it any CC.
