Re: Harley Davidson - Fatboy or Crossbones

Is it not the fact Harley Davidson parts particularly the chrome one to be in good quality to prevent rust? I raise this question as many as people were saying that you are going to stay in Chennai (not one in TBHP claimed that yet) so chances of getting the chromed componet getting rusted against the poweder coated parts that could be repainted if required without loosing thickness of the surface.

Any comment?

Re: Harley Davidson - Fatboy or Crossbones - Ultra Classic wins!

Hi TBHPians,

I have been thinking of buying a Harley Davidson for almost four years. I literally had so much of online/offline discussions selecting the right motorcycle.

Long story short, I finally bought a Harley Davidson Ultra Classic touring bike few days ago. The bike has been upgraded to match almost everything that comes with CVO models of the same class. This bike will come with me to India after a year or two. Since it is pretty new experience riding a motorcycle in this class, other than finding it very very heavy and hard to maneuver at slow speeds I have nothing much to write about the motorcycle at this point as I'm learning. I'm also planning to take it for few long rides here in US after the winter. But gladly sharing pictures of the motorcycle here:

Great Bike. The electra glide is really the iconic HD.

Just a word of caution when bringing over the bike, registering it in India will be a real pain.

Thank you. But why do you think the registration is going to be a pain when brought through legal channel?

I've also brought a couple of vehicles through legal channels.

With the new RTO systems at least here in Bangalore and AFAIK in other big cities to register the vehicle the state RTA has to accept and add the vehicle to the RTO system so that it can be registered.

Getting this done is a drawn out hassle assuming you have a good RTO agent who will do the running around for you. My bike took almost 7 months to get registered.

I see your point but I personally experienced TN RTOs are bit acceptable compared to KA ones. Also my passport address is in tier 3 city not in the big ones.

Great, I hope it works out easier for you then. Just wanted you to be aware. No sense in other going through the same hassles.

Re: Harley Davidson - Fatboy or Crossbones

Perfectly right, that is the main purpose of forums like this for fellow enthusiasts. Thanks for the word of caution.

Personally I have at least one more year to enjoy the rides here. Anything may change during the course of time. For now I will keep reading about good, bad, ugly stories of import experiences to makeup my mind at the tail end of my stay in US.

Thanks again.

Re: Harley Davidson - Fatboy or Crossbones

Congrats Trammway on the beautiful Ultra Classic. One of the iconic HDs
Although it will be hard work in congested city traffic, will be a joy on the open highways

Post our discussions here, I also imported my R1200GS thru the same agent of Shrini 3 years back and the agent did a fantastic job. He had the bike cleared in 3 days. But, yes like VellVector said, the registration process at RTO was a different story as it took about 4 months and lots of follow-up by my wife in my absence. Luckily, my 1200GS name was already inputed in the RTO system (even the HD Ultra Classic should be in the system as I have seen UC bikes with TN & KA plates) so that delay was avoided. But my registration delay was a combination of 2 things- 1) I decided I am importing something legally and I will not pay a single penny bribe. 2) Many past RTO guys have landed in soup from DRI after they registered bikes that were fraudulently imported paying minimal customs and hence they need to make double & triple sure of everything. Although, its well within the authority of the concerned RTO to issue the registration, they want the final green signal to come from the Transport Commissioners office which takes time. So lots of patience is required at RTO.

Good wishes for many many enjoyable miles on your UC
