Harley Davidson today launched the 2014 lineup of its motorcycles today in the US - http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...torcycles.html

Key changes to the Sportster Lineup including the Superlow, Iron, 48 includes -

1. New Foundation Brake System - whereby they have increased the size of the brake rotors from 292mm to 300mm, and added a more powerful, stylized front caliper with 34mm pistons, and stylized rear caliper to match. Other system features include an improved all-aluminum integrated rear master cylinder with reservoir, new all-aluminum front master cylinder with reduced friction and higher efficiency, and stainless steel braided lines. Adding to more confidence on the road, and more power and predictability when you squeeze the brakes.

2. Optional Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) - on all Sportster models. ABS improves overall braking performance, and keeps you from locking up under heavy braking. Plus, the entire system is smartly integrated into the design of the bike, so nothing gets in the way of your steel work of art.



3. New Ergonomic Hand Controls - with some new features, like a trip switch and vehicle “start” switch on keyless models.

4. Integrated Electrical System - every 2014 Sportster model now has a new body controller with updated routing. It has a cleaner look and reduces the number of wiring harnesses, switches, relays and fuses. We’ve also added a new voltage regulator with modified fins and integrated connectors to improve heat rejection.



5. New Closed Loop Exhaust System -Designed to meet future worldwide emissions standards. The new closed loop exhaust system delivers heart-pounding performance in the key of the trademark Harley-Davidson rumble. With its robust, soul-stirring big twin design, new durable mufflers with exhaust shields, a catalyst and mini heated oxygen sensors that improve emissions and drivability, this system is not only better for the environment, it makes riding better.



6. New Tacho and Gear Indicator Readout on Speedometer - The 2014 Sportster models get a new speedometer with a gear indicator readout and a tachometer that can be activated by your trip switch.



7. Plus there is 'unconfirmed' news that all headlights are now HID's.

Besides these changes to the Sportster range, they have discontinued many models and also made similar changes to their other line-ups.

On a related subject, seems there are going to be some interesting tech/comfort upgrades to their touring line up very soon. In fact Harley does it in such a way that it does not stick out but is beautifully integrated within their set styling philosophy and they dont give you an overdose of tech gizmos (read- more things to go wrong).

2014 Superlow - Revised exhausts with heat shields and larger disk brakes and ABS visible... Very little visual differences otherwise from the 2013 model.

I drove this 2013 model(and many other including Night rod) during the demo day. This one, I felt more engine vibration than other models and which will make this bike only suitable for short distance < 50 - 60 kms. Looking forward for the Demo day for 2014 models in Oct.

Aah! I am looking forward to the demo day. Not sure if future owners (the one's that have just booked) will also be made aware of the event/Invited.

The demo day was in US dealerships.I am not sure whether in India they would do that considering the fact that many people have two wheeler license when compared to US. This demo day is conducted twice a year all over US by the dealers and Harley on different dates and open to public who has US Motorcycle license.

Hi chaps. I visited the dealers in Pune. FYI I was told that the ABS on all sportster models wont apply to the 2014 models sold in India. Meaning we still get the non abs versions on the superlow and iron. Also the iron 883 will only be sold in two colours amber whisky and denim black. Pearl blue is discontinued on the iron and the superlow will be sold only in vivid black and brilliant silver.

I specifically asked about Gear Indicator - India bound models (2014 models) do not have them. Is what the showroom folks told me. I am yet to check them myself.

It is indeed sad to know that the rest of the world gets the new mods for the 2014 models but we Indians do not. Also not happy that the big blue pearl colour on the iron has been discontinued. IMO that was the grooviest colour option.

Also they could've introduced Sand Cammo Denim color too. They just added Amber Whiskey to the India bound Sportsters! :(

Spotted this new Harley Davidson XL 883 in Hyderabad a few days ago, when I was there.

Two typical Indian style questions -

(a) What is the on-road price?
(b) What is the average fuel consumption?

Answers by the owner, who fielded such questions for the "n th" time, since he bought this beauty -

(a) Rs 8.80 L on road Hyderabad
(b) 18 kmpl (the Yamaha RD 350 also delivered some 18 kmpl, but for such bikes "average" is not what they symbolise and stand for) .
