Re: Triumph Street Triple: Ownership Review

My first long ride with the Striple, or rather our first long ride: The home minister and I were discussing on how to spend our 4- day long weekend and she quickly said 'Let's do a bike ride, car we can go some other time' What sweeter words could I have asked for? We started looking at all nearby places, and most places turned out to be in the thick of monsoons. Rain rides are good, but we weren't in the mood for one and decided on hitting the opposite coast. We finalised on Pondicherry, after recollecting our previous visit, remembering the mouthwatering wood-burnt pizzas.

Loaded up the white horse and we were good to go. We took the much advised B'lore-Vellore- Arcot-Cheyyar-Vandavasi-Tinidvanam-Pondi route and were pleased with the quality of roads. Traffic too was sparse and the weather, most amenable.

First stop at Saravana Bhava, Shoolagiri

We had decided we would take a break every hour, preferably at the toll booths. The B'lore -Chennai highway is a hoot to ride, 6 lane fun. Could easily do 100-110kmph most of the time, with occasional high speed bursts.

Had a sumptuous lunch and took some rest, before we headed out for the evening.
A welcome shower in the evening really cooled things down, and we had a great walk on the Promenade Beach. Finished off the night with some French dinner.

Riding back on the Chennai highway, we encountered some heavy head wind and cross winds. Always a hindrance in the monsoons, but nevertheless, made it back in good time

900 + kms of great riding!

Overall, the bike averaged around 24kmpl, thanks to the home minister keeping a check on the throttle.
Looking forward to more rides, even as I type this

Good ride there Sharath! Nice clicks too. So apart from Pondi, you did not encounter any rain through the ride i guess! 24kmpl is pretty decent for cruising in 3 digit speeds with some speed bursts thrown in.

Re: Triumph Street Triple: Ownership Review

For a lanky guy like yourself, the size of the bike seems perfect. Which is good news for me as Im quite large built too. When it comes to the litre class I guess a lot of people like to go to Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki which is probably why the speed triple is not a favourite?

I see the new helmet on you mobike. Was this picture taken recently?

Some thoughts on the Speed: bike is significantly larger than the Street, and the extra weight too is very apparent. Haven't ridden one, so don't know about the riding characteristics. Certainly quite a handful for small guys like me. The above quoted mileage seems true, bigger engine, when given the stick will gulp more fuel.

Quite a confusing and mixed comment. You say your large built but, say Street Tripple suits you better and Speed isn't popular because its still smaller than the other Jap brands?

Care to clarify?

Re: Triumph Street Triple: Ownership Review

Amazing ride info my friend. It's always a thrill to ride on that stretch. How much time did you take to reach Pondi from Bangalore? We have a ride planned end of this month and was just curious on it.

Amazing ride that you have. I guess all team BHPIans from Bangalore should meet and ride together once. Looking forward for such a ride to catch up with all you experts and your expert opinion out there.

Sorry Mobike. I meant to say the speed triple and its seating height seems to be suitable for a large guy like me. I have my eye on the speed triple and the z1000 but Kawasaki's uptight sales tone makes me lean more towards the triumph.

I meant the speed triple isnt selling in numbers probably because the japanese street bikes are more popular when it comes to the litre class?!

Except for the Z1000, I doubt if the other popular Jap bikes like the Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha come for the same price as the Speed Tripple

I feel the reason for low sales is because of little unfamiliarity of Triumph brand in India in the sport bike segment ( we all grew up with jap brands as the symbols of sportsbikes, didnt we?) but, as more and more people start buying then people will realize how good the Triumph bikes are

Re: Triumph Street Triple: Ownership Review

Excellent pictures. Especially the 4th and last one

Along with pictures do share your experiences of bike's performance/anecdotes etc...would be fun to read them as you clock more miles on it

Re: Triumph Street Triple: Ownership Review

In terms of experience, there isn't much I can write that isn't conveyed by the pics, but here goes:

- I'm very well versed with the bike now, and the bike is simply amazing at handling. I can use it as a commuter and as a tourer, just requires different modulation from the right hand. Very easy to ride at even single digit speeds, in crawling traffic

- Post the first service, the engine heat has really come down. Nowadays, I rarely even feel the engine heating up, even in peak Bangalore traffic

- Longest ride has been the Bangalore- Pondicherry ride, around 1000kms. Every kilometer was enjoyable and even the pillion was well catered to, considering it is a sports bike.

- Have covered around 5k kms now, and (touch wood ) haven't come across any issues with the bike. Infact, I took her into the ASS just for a look over and thought the chain might need some tightening but to my surprise, everything was within tolerance. Very happy with the quality of the parts used. Goes to show with due care and smart riding, owning a big bike will not burn a big hole in the pocket

-Looks and questions galore: With a lot of big bikes coming in ( Triumph's own bikes, Kawa Z800, Z1000 ), I thought people might have lost interest in the big bikes, since they're becoming so common place. But I notice a lot of people still craning their necks to catch a good look of the bike, questions about the origin of the bike, the cubic capacity etc. To my surprise, the mileage questions have gone down, and my answer of around 20kmpl is actually considered 'Good', for such a bike

- That intake growl, and the inline triple sound, is something that will keep enthusiasts coming back again, and again and again. It's simply intoxicating

- The wet weather has kept me away from riding in the ghats and twisties, so that's definitely on the cards, once the weather clears up. But that being said, the tires offer very good grip even in the wet, and the rider never loses confidence or composure even with wide throttle openings in the wet, or heavy braking. I've felt the ABS kicking in only once or twice, but the assurance it provides is immense. One can brake with confidence and things will always be in order.

- Coming to some downsides.......
The rear hugger is absolutely pathetic, doesn't help in anyway at all.... completely useless. All the muck is splashed up onto the pillion, or the rear seat. That's just 7000 bucks down the drain.

-Which bring s me to the next downside, the accessories though cheaper than the US or Europe, are still expensive and the choice is just too much

- Suspension is designed for European build riders, which means it's on the stiffer side, and for a lighter bloke like me, the ride gets pretty bumpy

I guess that sums up my experience so far, looking forward to many more happy miles

P.S: My experience won't be complete without mentioning the BRATS: The Bangalore Riders Association of Triumph (B.R.A.T.S) is one amazing group to be a part of, and I'm very happy to have company of such enthusiastic and passionate people. The interactions are always interesting and the rides even better. The group is ever growing and a great medley of people from varied backgrounds. Always looking forward to rides with the BRATS, which are almost there every Sunday, whether it's just a breakfast ride, a long overnighter or just a meet inside the city.
