Re: DSK Motowheels to bring Benelli Motorcycles to India

Don't know much about the brand except that its Italian. Did not even know that the engines are sourced from Yamaha till Ricci pointed it out. Interested like most of us just because its another entrant into the 600 class. We have so few that every new one is a welcome addition, for providing some choice, if not downright lust worthy or proper competition. All of the above notwithstanding if there is one thing thats common to anything Italian, its ooomph. And somehow I just dont get that oomph-y feeling from any of the bikes, seen from any angle. None of the 3 shown above are drop dead gorgeous. Not even close. Where did the Italian looks go?

Here's the review of Benelli TNT 1130R review by power drift. Amazing editing.

Saw the Benelli BN600i today at Wakdewadi. Lacks outright italian flair, but glorious music from those Ixil exhausts !!

I'll reserve personal judgment until I can sample both era builds. For the estimated price, they do look better VFM though, and with Yamaha engines, much of the reliability aspect should be taken care of.

I think this is not correct. Benelli does not use Yamaha engines. The factory was always involved in making its own engines. At one time Argentine Millionaire De Tomaso had bought both Benelli and Moto Guzzi together and created better engines with more infusion of capital. That is when the Sei was born (as pointed out by Sutripta). Later on both the brands were merged until the last part of the previous century and production once again began at Pesaro. Benelli bikes are built even today at Pesaro (the Chinese are just owners).

The engines for Benelli have been their own right from the beginning. They started with a two stroke 75cc engine and then made a complete motorcycle with a 98cc engine of their own. I think you are confusing Benelli for Bimota which is a chassis specialist and has used different engines from different makers. The DB series was with Ducati engines - Ducati Bimota, the HB series was with Honda, the SB with Suzuki, YB with Yamaha but their most successful collaboration from among the Japanese was with Kawasaki and they were sold as the KB series (not Kawasaki Bajaj). Benelli's engines are their own. They make parallel twins, in line fours, and large capacity in line three cylindered engines. In fact, the 600 cc series is an inline four engine based one while bigger capacities ranging from 899 to 1400 cc engines are triples.

Maybe so, I just recall a mention of Yamaha being the supplier of the inline 4 600 motors a while back, given Benelli isn't the most successful financially in the last decade and this one, funding for R&D of their engines would be hard to come by and asking for existing engines was an interim solution.

Anyway, I just did a short search of the engine dimensions, the borexstroke figures don't match the R6 at least.

I do know their 899 and 1130 engines are their own home-grown designs, and not at all mistaking Benelli for Bimota !

Re: DSK Motowheels to bring Benelli Motorcycles to India

Superb video. Makes our Indian TV shows bike reviews look amateurish.

It does make a difference if one has a biker who can ride well especially for 1000+CC and sporty bikes. The lean angles were neat and well shot.

Well I guess the prime reason why the Sei was special was because it was the world's first production motorcycle which came with 6 cylinders. It came as a 750 cc and also as a 900 cc. Alejandro De Tomaso who bought Benelli and Moto Guzzi wanted to fight off the Japanese with an unusual solution and that was why the six cylinder engines were made. Funnily enough there is a story that the Sei was to be branded as a Moto Guzzi but since the engine of 750 cc was claimed to have been a 6 cylinder reverse engineering of the 4 cylinder unit used on the CB 500 Honda and since Moto Guzzi was the more historically significant brand, it was decided to call it a Benelli. De Tomaso himself denied this claim and the myth is that he went to order the construction of the 900 cc 6 cylinder Sei. Most of this is now folklore and therefore very difficult to separate the chaff from the grain. I hope Sutripta this is what you were expecting me to mention about the Sei and what made it special.

It was meant to occupy mindspace, which it most certainly did. Benelli's claim to fame. So am surprised at the almost total lack of recall on this forum.

I believe there was one in Bombay. Maybe someone can help.

Re: DSK Motowheels to bring Benelli Motorcycles to India

Plenty of stuff happening for Benelli.

Bikes will be launched in a couple of weeks time. Benelli planning 7 dealerships by end of this month.

Although the bikes weigh upwards of 200kg, I was surprised how easily I could flick them around in corners, at Lavasa.

ABS might be considered in 2015

Can you please post your reviews here? I am shocked to hear that these bikes are not equipped with ABS. Aren't these supposed to be super/sports bikes?

Though the higher end benelli bikes have brembo brake setup (i guess even monoblock) but they dont have ABS and TCS.

Any ballpark figure on pricing front for 600gt? Your first hand out info would help.
