Polaris mulls localisation of parts for Indian Motorcycles Polaris Industries is conducting a study to introduce bikes priced below Rs 10 lakh in India. The company owns the Indian Motorcycle brand, which it introduced in the country in 2014.
The company's bikes are priced between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 35 lakh. The recently launched Indian Scout is the cheapest of the range (Rs. 12 lakh) and will be the first bike from Indian to come to India via the CKD route.
However, Indian's rivals Harley-Davidson and Triumph have priced their entry level models at around Rs. 5.5 lakh, which is considerably lower. This has been possible since both the companies not only assemble their bikes in India, but also use localised parts. Polaris is considering adopting the same strategy for Indian. The company plans to start CKD and local assembly in the next three - five years.
Additionally, it will facilitate Indian component makers to supply to its manufacturing units in the US and Europe for ATVs, motorcycles and agriculture products.
Polaris is also working on extending its dealership network in India. At present, it has just two dealerships - one in Delhi and one in Bengaluru. It plans to open outlets in Mumbai and Chennai next month and in Ahmedabad and Hyderabad by August. The company is also planning to add six more outlets in 2016.
