Sire, how could i forget. That was a fantastic ride... And imagine, we couldnt even go into the temple lol. I am also very sorry i pushed you so far for lunch, i am so used to riding without a meal for hours on stretch. Is that why you never pinged me again lol! Selfish solo rider that i am. We must ride again together sometime, i promise to stick with you.

I am just so used to riding with a light breakfast, and then its either coffee or lime juice all the way to an early dinner at my destination. A mate I rode with a week back was begging me to stop for smokes and a chai, i just kept leading him on until we were about 50 kms from bangalore and he just pulled off the road and said, this is it bud!

What also makes our ride memorable is... That we dont have a single picture of it for it to be memorable! Christ, we were just riding our butts off werent we.

2nd Service @ 6,000 kms

It was time for second service, and all that was scheduled as per the service manual was to have a look into the brake pads and have them cleaned if required. I also had my air filter taken out and cleaned using an air compressor.

I decided to follow the service manual for the bike and opted out of the oil change at 6,000 km intervals which is what is normally followed by the service centers in India. So oil changes were at the mandated 12,000 km intervals now. I never use my motorcycle on a daily basis in the city - she is kept under wraps the whole week, and pulled out of the garage only on the week-ends. So there was no stop-go traffic eating away at the life of my bike.

I had also decided to go to KTM Indiranagar since it was just down the road from where I live.

Manju (the guy in the riding seat) is a fantastic technician, always smiles and always in glee when a 650 rolls through the shop floor. His manager sitting right behind him is also an extremely hands on person. Sadly, won't be meeting these guys again anytime soon (unless the 790 ADV R comes through

From today's ride to Dandiganahalli dam. Crazy driver joined me as well, and i think he will do a much more spectacular job with the trip log on his thread with pictures.

Ride to Dandiganahalli Dam

Posting up a few snaps that didn't make the cut to Crazy Driver's as usual Team-BHP benchmark crushing post on the topic

Since I suggested the destination, I was asked to take the lead up to the dam. The early morning was fantastic and we kicked things up to high gear all the way there. There was some kind of off-road (no tarmac), so it was a bit of fun.

Had to pass quite a few quaint little villages after Chikballapur, and they were quite stunned to see us - though I am sure they've seen a lot more expensive motorcycles come their way than any one of us could have seen in our lifetime.

We reached and were surprised by an army of about 50 motorcyclists already there (alright I'm exaggerating, it must have been 20). Thankfully, they left in about 10 minutes, so we had the whole place to ourselves.

The return was a tame affair, both Crazy Driver and myself split ahead from the troop and had some fun in the moderate twisties that we encountered (if they can be called that).

Fun times.

Ride to Jawadhu Hills

This Sunday that just passed - a few of us mates decided to ride out. This is how things panned out.

Monday
Me: Guys, how about a ride to Gundal Dam and Dhontseling Monastery?
Mate 1: Yeah, keep me posted, I'll join wherever.

Wednesday
Nasir Kaka: Hey man, I have a loaner 2017 BMW R1200 GS which I have been asked to take out for a ride. Can we ride somewhere close, say Krishnagiri for breakfast and back?
Me: Krishnagiri...damn, its boring. But I want to see the 1200 GS up close, so let me think about it.

Saturday
Mate 2: Hey, I would like to join the ride too, will let you know if the wife's health improves will tag in.
Me: Its probably to Krishnagiri, another mate has a 1200 GS, he wanted to ride somewhere short.
Mate 2: I dont really care where.
Nasir Kaka (after having started the 1200 GS for the first time in his life and taking it for a short spin around the owner's backyard): Hey man, why dont' we ride to Yelagiri, its just a short distance off from Krishnagiri
Me: Dear Lord, thank you for blessing us with this reward
Me: Dear Mate 2, we are riding to Yelagiri, is it alright?
Mate 2: Yeah, but there was another place just 30-40 kms off Yelagiri which I wanted to explore, but maybe next time.
Me: Eh? What place?
Mate 2: How about Jawadhu hills?
Me: Looked up Gmaps, full of green forest cover, some hills, case closed, venue changed.

Tesseract: Going further with the Kawasaki Versys 650. EDIT: 50,000 km completed-screenshot_20171128135429.png

Me: Lets all meet at 5.30 AM at just after the EC toll.
All mates: Thumbs up.

Tesseract: Going further with the Kawasaki Versys 650. EDIT: 50,000 km completed-img_20171126_060759065.jpg

The loaner beemer in all her glory. Nasir Kaka trying to figure out what the heck some of the buttons were for.

Tesseract: Going further with the Kawasaki Versys 650. EDIT: 50,000 km completed-img_20171126_060813856.jpg

The guys. We were 4 of us. 3 Versys 650's and 1 R1200 GS.

Tesseract: Going further with the Kawasaki Versys 650. EDIT: 50,000 km completed-img_20171126_060834.jpg

Take off time.

We headed down the highway towards Chennai. I was asked to take the lead, so lead I did. Two of the Versys' overtook me and stopped at a brand spanking new Saravana Bhavan after Shoolagiri. I stopped by there and since it was still a bit too early (7 am I think), I asked them to ride further down, take the left to Chennai, and lets keep riding until we hit another good restaurant.

That restaurant never came, and the guys were ready to kill me. I hadn't had dinner the previous evening, so I thought I would fall dead myself anyway. And the turn off to Vaniyambadi had already come up. We were warned that there is nothing of repute to eat at after we turn in to Vaniyambadi.

Getting fried over the breakfast stop call.

However a few 10 kilometres down, we were blessed with both a short drizzle and this.

Fantastic wood fire idli's, vadas, pongal, dosas, and omelettes.

Tesseract: Going further with the Kawasaki Versys 650. EDIT: 50,000 km completed-img_20171126_075536.jpg

Another view. Such wood fire drills can only be gotten in the smaller villages. Everyone was thrilled and much happy we rode down here to get our food.

Breakfast was swiftly put away, and the bill for the 4 of us was a princely Rs 170. Nasir Kaka was kind enough to foot the bill. Well, he was riding the GS anyway, so...

We arrived at a checkpost, we had to pay a small fee (some 10-15 bucks per head) to enter the Jawadhu hills area. The kind fellow at the restaurant we ate at suggested we ride down to Bheema Falls, there's plenty water now - dont miss out.

This was the view that greeted us when we reached the entry point of Bheemavaram Falls.

Re: Ride to Jawadhu Hills

Did you try this route? This doesn't come up in G maps. This route goes through a mini forest ( as per locals) but its scenic. After Amirthi, you need to ask around a bit to reach vellore.

We decided to head back. Back at the parking spot, we found quite a few "bikers" hanging around...the BMW. Nobody gave a damn about the Versys. A mate even forgot to lock his Versys. Pfft.

Fired the engines up, and started riding down the forest all the way to Chengam. We were spoilt for spots to stop and do photoshoots. I'll just quickly compile most of them down in the next post.

As with any ride, everyone just bolted home - a mate's wife was making some mutton dish for lunch and we saw him just once after we touched the Krishnagiri highway from Chengam

This is the opposite of the direction we took. We went down towards Chengam. This is up. Yes, the route down was also a mini forest. I can imagine how the direction you pointed out above must be. Definitely a must visit one of these Sunday's. Thanks for sharing mate!

Hey Red Liner

Place looks very good but GS is killing

You didn't write your first impressions of riding GS, waiting for that.

Also, can you put your ride on the Gmap with names showing, it will sure make a good ride, will mark it.

Hey kk saar,

We weren't even allowed to touch the GS let alone ride it! Lol. Only nasir kaka has ridden the bike, and will leave it to him to post his insights.

I can tell you one thing... That akrapovic exhaust just floors everything in sight.

re: Tesseract: Going further with the Kawasaki Versys 650. EDIT: 50,000 km completed

First thing that caught my attention was that the Versys runs on 10W40 oil, I'm fairly surprised, might be cause I'm old school and use 20W50 on whatever I ride.

As for the hand-guard's its a wise investment, got a similar pair for 1.8k a while ago. I cannot for the love of it remember the number of times it has saved my fingers from impact, thought after a couple of hits the stickers do come off.

Very low compression for the versys 650 allows it to run 10w40 for about 10k kms (factory interval is 12000 kms for an oil change). Although the 7100 motul oil is terrible and should not be recommended. And nor is the 300v,although many use it and change it at 6000 kms which seems to early.

I have moved to shell, and i find the oil much better in comparison. My other options to try include mobil 1 and liquimoly, but considering how well shell fully synth is priced, i doubt i will go to either of the other two oils mentioned.

Will wait for the next oil change and see how the shell oil looks once drained out of the bike.

Re: Ride to Jawadhu Hills

Missed this ride. Being the last weekend on the month - my bike (and my bank account) was quite literally running on fumes.

Now that looks so good. Plain, simple and clean.
