Kill me for this but I kinda like the way the stock exhaust sounds past 8000 rpm when the servo valve opens up and the engine goes into crazy mode. But yeah, some more power is always welcome

Re: 2016 Kawasaki ZX-10R : Shredder joins the family

So while i was shopping for the cowl on ebay, i happened to bump onto another product which seemed quite nifty and thought what the hell, lets try it.

Presenting the Motoskin scratch protector film for your motorcycle meter console. Now its not rocket science, just the same stuff as your regular cellphone scratch protector film but someone made a business out of cutting it into shape and size for automobile consoles.

Paid $16 for it and it shipped for free and landed at my doorstep in about 2 weeks.

Installation was simple stuff and the product finish and clarity is good. Hope it stays on for a while and keeps the screen free of scratches which mostly happen thanks to dust and grime.

OCD much?? Maybe !! :P

P.S- the yellow tint is only the top layer which is removed on installation. The actual film is clear in finish.

Re: 2016 Kawasaki ZX-10R : Shredder joins the family

I must admit its the first time I ve seen a guard for a motorcycle console. Although i have seen local blokes getting the screen on their bikes (not super bikes) covered with a clear screen guard at accessory stores.
As far as the one for the console goes, never really felt the need for it but when the pennies are less no harm in trying out I guess.

I was gonna get the exact same thing for the my Z. It was the orange color one - but I never knew the actual screen protector is a transparent one. Think I should but it now.

Check the product description on the site properly before you buy. There are tinted ones (green, orange, blue etc) also available. The description for this said clear hence i bought it.

Varun keep a close watch on the degradation of that scratch guard when it gets exposed to heat. I have a feeling it will turn yellowish after prolonged exposure to sun and might be difficult to remove it later.

I have seen some old P220's used to have such film on the odometer and owners never removed it causing it degrade.

In any case, if it works well even after prolonged use, I would love to see more products on these lines for motorcycles.

Re: 2016 Kawasaki ZX-10R : Shredder joins the family

Went for another track weekend to Kari motorspeedway at Coimbatore for an Open session with Apex Racing Academy. Happened to bump into fellow bhpian Ajay who had ridden down all the way from Kerala for his Level 1 training on his Z800.

Since this was Shredder's second outing at Kari, I was relatively more confident on her and this greatly impacted my pace. But there is still some time before I completely put my faith in her and give her the beans around the track the way I would my 650. She still does scare me albeit a little lesser than before.

In the absence of SC2s, stuck to the stock RS10s for this trackday and they did perform well except on two occasions where the TC kicked in abruptly and almost threw me off my seat. The guy tailing me on one lap saw this Bharatnatyam happen live and thought I was going to go into a highside. But then thats just Shredder, she likes a bit of drama now. I went through the corner with me praying and her grinning.

Actually it was rider error which made her snub her nose at me. I whacked the throttle a wee bit earlier than usual trying to go faster and the street oriented RS10s protested in return. The thing about the 10R's TC is that it lets your purposely induce a bit of slide before it throws in the towel. For a pro guy, this is god-sent. For a noob like me, It can get your suit dirty in the wrong places. Thankfully, she has these electronics in place so that dimwits like me dont end up going over the handlebars on such occasions. Are the electronics as polished as lets say an Aprilia? Nope. The Japs came much late to the electronic rider aids party and it shows.

Her power is still mind-numbing but I realised I badly need to get her sprocketed correctly to use all that power. On a tight track like Kari, by the time I came into the power band I was already on my next braking marker. A-1/+2 sprocket change and a 520 conversion should give her a lot more teeth in terms of low down acceleration. On it goes into the shopping list.

Oh and that MRA screen is heavenly in keeping my 6ft frame safely tucked away from wind blast on the straights. A good investment.

Thanks. I wasnt timing myself much but focusing more on certain weak areas basis feedback from the coaches. My estimate is I was somewhere around that 1.17-1.19 ballpark. The more tracktime i get on her I'll be able to cut down my times further. I had to unlearn my entire 2.5 years of reference markers and race lines learnt on the 650 because a litre bike is a completely different animal around the track vs smaller bikes

.
Had read your posts and never expected to meet you at Kari and was pretty surprised. Anyways, should say had a real blast at Kari, a real eye opener. Believe 2017 schedule's are out and they are providing some sessions at MMRT, chennai. Again, look forward to meet you there.

Cheers.

Hey Vasuki,

Good to see you enjoy the training. Would definitely recommend you try MMRT. Its a completely different kind of fun from Kari, specially for the bigger bikes. I should hopefully (time permitting) be there for a session or two. I am sure you are already planning to get to level 2 soon. Good luck

Re: 2016 Kawasaki ZX-10R : Shredder joins the family

After some good weekend runs Shredder was due for her second service at 5,000 kms odd. Thankfully despite the ongoing split between IKM and Bajaj, the present service setup was operational albiet a little low on spares and overloaded with work.
Thanks to the service incharge at Bangalore dealer, Mr. Bhanu, I was able to source the elusive Oil filter from the Cochin dealership and the lucky last piece of air filter at the Bangalore centre. Hopefully things should be more streamlined once the exclusive Kawa setup opens up soon.

So after the last trackday I realised that the stock gearing on the bike is a bit too tall for our Indian racetracks (its possibly ok for BIC). After days of research and discussions on the global forums decided to go 2 up on the rear sprocket. Promptly ordered Vortex light weight steel sprockets (525 pitch, 17 front, 41 rear) and the best-in-the-market-presently 3D chain from EK (which also happens to be the OEM part, good work Kawa) from STG. But thanks to murphy, the good 'ol chaps at Kawa service did not have the washer and nut needed for the front sprocket replacement and hence the sprocket job is pending till the parts arrive. Hopefully and If the Japanese gods are kind, it should happen before my upcoming trackday.
The flipside of going 2 up on the rear?? The top speed theortically comes down from 315 to 300 kmph (the stock bike is limited electronically to 299 anyways). The gains? The bike rushes through the rev-range to power band. The maths roughly says that vs the stock gearing, I would now be approx 1000 rpm higher for the same speed. Basically, I get more drive coming out of corners and can hit the powerband earlier.

Anyways, coming to the service, Shredder got a fresh diet of oil, oil filter (thank you Kerala) and surprisingly a new air filter (blame that Ram Air intake and our riding conditions).
She also swapped her stock brake pads with EBC Extreme Pro ones and the stock bar ends which were losing paint thanks to my gloves (bad bad paintjob Kawa) got swapped out with spanking new R&G bar end sliders .
She also gets fresh rubber for the trackdays. Hello Pirelli Supercorsa SC2.
Overall the bike feels and rides much smoother and eager post the service and the EBC pads feel wow. I mean the Stock Brembo pads were very nice but the EBCs are just so much better. And they havent even bedded in yet!!!

Her sprocket job is next on the cards and she has a track outing coming up at MMSC. Stay tuned....

Have you tried the GSX SF pictured? How does it compare to the litre class bikes, though it's more comfort oriented?

A superb machine. A very good sports tourer option. Though it wont be fair or prudent to pitch it against a supersport. They are both made for different purposes
