Intermot: 2017 Kawasaki Ninja 650 unveiled EDIT: Launched in India at Rs 5.69 lakhs

Kawasaki has unveiled the 2017 Ninja 650 at the Intermot Motorcycle Show, which is currently underway at Cologne, Germany. The new model gets comprehensive updates, including a new platform and a design that is inspired from its bigger siblings, like the Ninja ZX-10R.

The 2017 Ninja 650 is built on a trellis-type steel chassis and gets an aluminium swing-arm. This new platform has helped Kawasaki engineers to shed 19 kgs of weight from the bike. The company claims that the weight reduction has also helped in making the bike 6.8% more fuel efficient.

Other design elements on the new bike include an all-digital instrument cluster, a conventionally placed monoshock at the rear, and a three-level manually adjustable windscreen. While the seat height remains identical to the older model, handlebars of the new Ninja 650 have been placed slightly lower. It will be available in three colour options - lime green and ebony, metallic black, pearl white and candy burnt orange.

Powering the 2017 Ninja 650 is a 649 cc parallel-twin engine, which is similar to what was offered on its predecessor. However, engineers have tweaked the engine to be Euro IV compliant. This has resulted in a power output drop of 2 BHP, which now stands at 69 BHP. The bike also gets a slipper clutch and ABS as standard.

Kawasaki is expected to launch the 2017 Ninja 650 in India in the second half of next year.

Totally loving this transformation. But even more interesting fact is that the new 650 is much lighter than the earlier iteration. 19kgs!

Hopefully we will get ABS as well when it is launched.

This looks like a proper upgrade to Ninja 300 now. The current version doesn't gel with the sharp styling of N300. But this seems a proper upgrade keeping the same design language. Currently the Versys is a better package than N650 at some additional cost, but this version puts the N650 back into consideration. Looks very hot now.

The relaxed riding position of N650 combined with the sharp styling of N300 is a very interesting combination! I hope that India gets it in colours, and not just an all black version.

This is without factoring the 2017 updates to Versys. While it may not be so much of a design update, but there are lots of functional updates expected in 2017.

^^ praful Oh yes, Versys 650 2017 has got a lot of interesting upgrades too, I agree. But unlike current version when the N650 looks too plain jane between N300 and Versys, this new version has got a chance to be considered.

New Versys 650 is a whole another discussion, and very interesting at that. Taking design cues from Versys1000 is perfect and can't wait to see it revealed.

I wonder that except design, N300 hasn't received any upgrade from its launce. In India, Kawasaki has been stubborn not to offer ABS on it, but no other parts/design has been changed since its inception. Guess they don't want to mess up perfection

I like it. It has a lot of ZX10R character in its looks.

But I still prefer the Z1000 . I wonder if there's going to be an update for that this year.

The ride position is supposed to have got a bit more sportier and committed as the handle has been lowered a bit. Provides more differentiation now from the versys and suits the character of the brand ninja I guess.

Hope they provide abs here this time around!
The new z650 looks smashing as well! A radical change from the earlier er650n

Here's a web commercial for the new N650. I agree that it looks a lot more pleasing now!

Quite a few models which have been updated for the next year seem to carry the ZX 10R design cues.

And I don't think the Z1000 would be updated since the Z900 is rumored to replace it.

I love this styling and I agree it feels like a proper upgrade to the N 300 now.

I REALLY hope they launch it with ABS this time and don't hike the prices obscenely.

Since Ninja 650 shall be coming with a slipper clutch and a different styling and console, it might be priced at around 8 lacs. ABS might be included as a std package.

As previously said, Z900 might eat away z800 and z1000 and might be priced at around 11-12 lacs since it has lost weight and might be including a new or similar console as in 2017 N650 models. Might be coming with a slipper clutch or traction control or riding modes, as well to justify the price hike. Lets wait for couple of days for official release to get more clarity.

Is this pricing coming from some authentic source or just your guess. I really don't think something like slipper clutch, console and abs could skyrocket price to 8 lakh for a N. 650cc offering. For that price you're in strike range of street triple not to mention the widely overpriced CBR 650 which importantly is a proper in line 4 cylinder option.

Similarly, I don't think 800 moving to 900 could cause such a big price jump.

Finally on pricing, i believe these bikes would only make it to india mid next year. I doubt we can get an indication of "india" pricing within the next few days or even weeks. At best you can observe international pricing, compare with previous international pricing and make some guesses on indian pricing correspondingly - but anything definitive on this front is unlikely in my view in the coming days.

N650 still has a budget suspension. A slipper clutch + ABS+new frame+new styling could push price northwards by around 60K - 70K and not more than that. If they price it near 8L then this will lead to a huge gap between N300 and N650. Yamaha is contemplating assembling MT-09 and can price it around 8.5L to 9L.

I believe all new N650 will be a fantastic value proposition going forward as well.

Z900 will be mostly manufactured in Thailand and it has same KYB suspension with only rebound/preload adjustment as Z800. Major changes are increasing in Cubic capacity + all new steel trellis frame+slipper clutch. This frame has been borrowed from H2 family and does not increase cost significantly as it is still a high tensile steel frame. So Z900 is not exactly a proper upgrade when compared to Z800. Its like a more polished one

Also FTA with Thailand will not push price higher and i guess 9L ex-showroom price is possible.

But for some reason they have not updated Z1000 just like they did to N1000 as they might discontinue Z.

I doubt the 650 will gain a 2 lakh price increase just basis a slipper clutch, ABS and new console. Remember the mechanicals (engine, gearbox etc) are mostly the same, the chassis is now a simpler version (similar to the smaller kawis) instead of the dual tube perimeter kinds. Dont shoot me for this, but my money is on the price being bumped up max by 50k. I wont be surprised if they keep it the same as the present model. eg. - the new 10R carried a $600 price gain over the previous gen despite carrying a full factory of Bajaj Electricals inside it and much improved cycle parts.

The Z900 will carry a slipper clutch for sure. TC and Riding modes are good-to-have but may not make it if they want to keep the price at that 11 lakh mark. The problem is, add too much stuff and the pricing will push 12- 13 which will isolate their entire Z800 market. Keep it too basic and price it at 10-11 and the Z1000 customers will start moving to other litre nakeds.

The bike I am eagerly waiting for is the new Ninja1000. That thing now looks sweeter and carries way more punch in terms of kit. I mean which sports tourer under 15 lakhs (hoping) carries a Bosch IMU on it (that too the same one as the 10R).

Kawasaki has the right products to hold the market's interest for the next 2-3 years now. Hope they get their act together on the customer service and support front as well.

Hi Varun,
I am just wondering as to how IMU is useful on a sports tourer? I thought its best used on a sports bike like yours.

IMU helps the electronics interact with each other to in effect release a single output. Imagine you are on your sports tourer, leaned over in a ghat section, the rear wheel goes over a little too hard on power and induces a slip on the rear tyre. You feel the slip and try braking (panic response mostly). The IMU detects this entire circus and kicks in the TC to control the rear slip, at the same time since it knows you are leaned over it activates your cornering ABS so you still make the turn and dont go down the railing. If you ask me, the IMU kit makes more sense for the road where the variables are way more than the track and your control on them is inversely proportional. It is more on the street where you need the safety net of the electronics to keep the rubber side down. Not that they arent needed on the track but on the street their effect on your risks is way higher.

I may be wrong on this but my hunch is the Multistrada has one as well. And on the Ducati it stitches all the rider aids together beautifully.
