Brilliant. That means:

1. This bike should be immediately available at all tier 1 and 2 cities with a KTM presence immediately.

2. The ability to service and fix this bike at any KTM svc (or atleast access spares more importantly) will be a massive win.

This bike will be very close to what the z900 and the new CBR sells for onroad. Will be a tough sell in light of that competition and the fact that the bike looks extremely similar to the 390 duke.

While ability to service and fix is great, I am not too sure of wide availability of bike and spares right away. It is supposed to be CKD and only 100 units have been imported. KTM might just wait and watch to see the initial response.

Competition will indeed be tough. A lot of people might be swayed by the inline 4 sound of z900 or the sports bike look of CBR.

Now ACI says the launch has been postponed to next year due to 'homologation issues' -

Damn shame really. I can see a lot of people who were seriously looking at the Striples buy this as a value product. I think Triumph will need to bring in the Striple R to compete with this. I suspect that on road in Bangalore, the KTM will be around 10-10.5 L and from the reviews it rides like something between the Striple R and RS. If Triumph reduce the S price a bit and slot in the R at a 1-1.5L premium over the KTM, they won't lose too many sales to this totally awesome beast.

D790 will be dead in water at 10L OTR when you have inline 4's GSX750 & Z900 selling at a lower price point. So much emphasis on localisation etc shows clearly that KTM is trying hard to price it aggresively ... probably 50k-1L cheaper than segment leader Z900.

The 790 Ex show room is expected to be 7 odd lakhs. KTM has always managed to price products on par with what it is in the West. I'm sure they'll leave space for the small sibling, the 790 in the UK is around 8000 GBP, so realistically speaking, if it is priced well, it should be around 8-9 Ex Showroom. I think INR 700K is wishful thinking, but I'll take it any day! Ofcourse, I hope you are correct and it ends up being 8.5L on Road, in which case, it'll be the best road bike in the country as far as I'm concerned.

As far as the comparison with the Kawasaki and Suzuki are concerned, I'm not so sure it is a such an easy decision. The 790 is really light, has a load of tech, and completely different character to the Japanese competition. As such, the bikes will appeal to different riders. Either ways, between the GSX750,Z900,KTM790 and Striple we are going to be spoilt for choice. All of them ride well, all of them are great at what they do. If I can convince the wife to let me buy one, it will come down to the 790 or the Striple for me as these are what speak to me the most. I'd pay a 1 L premium for the KTM over the Japanese, but the Striple S is a bit striped down for me, the RS at 14 Lakhs on road would be priced out when compared to the 790.

Re: KTM teases Duke 790 prototype at the EICMA 2016

Received the same pics on WhatsApp. Apparently the launch is on September 5th and only 100 units will be made available for this calendar year.

Quickshifter with auto blipper, launch control, wheelie control, cornering ABS, cornering traction control, riding modes etc are supposedly standard.

Damn i dont know if i will get an exchange for my M821 but this thing looks supremely fun at 8lacs ex. Only downside, the Dukes all look the same! Clothes, color and the rest..wish KTM would have done something to differentiate this. At least a specific colour.

790 going for sale at 1 lakh discount in Bangalore. OTR 8.8L post discount. Thinking the discount will go up some more as we near the April 2020 timeline. At even 8.5 OTR, this seems like a serious contender for my upgrade. Coming from a 2013 390, this bike seems like a logical next step. Anyone here knows someone who owns the 790?
