BMW HP4 Race : Carbon fibre-framed Ducati Superleggera competitor

The HP4 did could easily have been the best superbike money could buy. But BMW could not rest on those laurels. With Ducati revealing the Superleggera 1299, they had to do something to trump the Italians. Thankfully they do have a lot of Carbon fibre left at their factory from their i3 and i8 cars.

They seem to have gathered those resources, put it together to make

The frame

The wheels

and a whole lot more

into a bike with mind boggling numbers.

Revealed late last year. The bike is track only version competitor to the Ducati Superleggera 1299.

The bike improves on what was considered electronic wizardry in the HP4 and is borderline magic

and carries famed cycle parts

MCN - Motorcyclenews.com gets to ride the BMW HP4 Race.

The headline figures are very similar to the Ducati, but the dry weight at 146 Kg is known to be 10 Kgs lower than the latter. Probably on account of lack of road friendly features like headlights, mirrors and a Euro 4 compliant exhaust.

MCN also unveils more details.

Boy that bike sounds wicked in the video!

A perfect competitor for the Superleggera. Though the HP4 falls in the litre class, it makes the same amount of power and is lighter.

Based on the S 1000 RR, the bike does look stunning but not as clean as the Superleggera. In terms of pure design philosophy, the Italians take away the ball.

In terms of technology, IMO the Superleggera seems to be getting pretty close to the MotoGP technology while the HP4 race is inclined towards the the WSBK. Although the Superleggera can be ridden on the streets, the HP4 race cannot.

Here's a quick comparo of the two bikes.

Another point to add to the comparison:

BMW recommends replacing the race spec engine every 5000 km (at a cost of 15000 euros) and it is claimed to be cheaper than rebuilding the existing engine.

The Ducati has 12000 km service intervals and that engine definitely lasts much longer.
