Re: 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review

Made 5x 12V Power Sockets for our Ninja 1000 Owners Club, at a fraction of the cost of what Kawasaki wants from us (a preposterous 7000+ bucks). This same socket will work on all Kawasaki motorcycles (Versys etc.) with Power Socket compatibility and accessory wire provision as a plug and play device.

2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-5x-power-sockets-kawasaki-13112017.jpg

Also received this Oil Filter Removal Tool/Wrench specifically for our Kawasaki Ninja 1000 (same will work on Versys etc.) from AliExpress for a mere 155 bucks - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2017...311.0.0.AUA9Zi

The Oil Filter location on the Ninja 1000

The tool easily slides over and fits properly

Just use a square drive to open the old filter and then refit the new oil filter. This will make future servicing of our bikes at home a easy affair.

I got the 12v power socket from sw motech for 3500 bucks. I am sure yours is hell cheaper than that though.

Dont even get mr started on the OEM kit.

Ninja has to be Green!

Here in Kerala, both Triumph and Harley do service at Trivandrum every quarter ( Triumph is more prompt on this) and they would be available for 2 days. Its quite helpful because the showroom is at Cochin which is around 230 kms away.

Searched everywhere for the Service Manual for the 2017/18 Ninja 1000 but to no avail. The latest that was available online was for the 2011 model. Finally some investment paid off. Here it is for the Ninja 1000 Community, 1st anywhere in the world for now -

Re: 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review

1st Service @794 kms on 16-11-2017 and Wheel RIMS changed

As some gentleman had pointed out on Day 1 - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/superb...ml#post4288694 , my alloy wheel rims had bent on Day 1 while bringing the bike back to Meerut after delivery while hitting a big pothole on NH58 which I was unable to spot in the dead of the night. Just plain bad luck I suppose. Though the mechanics had assured me that both these bends were very minor and can easily be hammered back into place as there was no loss of any air pressure neither any handling issues at speed even after a month. But still I was not convinced and went ahead with getting both the alloy wheels changed.

ALLOY WHEELS CHANGED

Both the wheels reach the dealership, securely packed and opened in my presence.

Eye watering pricing. Rs. 58,630/- for the Rear Wheel Assembly though Made in Japan.

Re: 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review

1st Service @794 kms on 16-11-2017

The bike reached 794kms on the Odo by the time I reached the dealership from Meerut
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_1.jpg

My packing kit for the service...lolz. The first job was to fit the additional horn.
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_2.jpg

All the fairings were removed as was the original horn and bracket. The head mechanic (Lalaram) wondering where he will get the horn fitted in such tight fairing with no unused space in the Ninja 1000.
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_3.jpg

This was the wiring diagram used. I had already prepared all initial wiring accordingly. My first choice were the Minda Trumpets but there was just no space to fit them in, not even a single unit as it was too wide. So had to settle for the Roots Smartones.
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-roots-windtone-24102017_1.jpg

The Relay was finally placed and zip tied at a spot where it caused no interference
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_4.jpg

A Y-Bracket was formed and all bolts were properly Loctite'd so that they do not come loose at speed
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_5.jpg

The Horns were securely hidden off with no interference or touching any ends even on full turns.
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_6.jpg

The Oil Filter. Rs. 730/-
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_8.jpg

And it was promptly replaced after draining the oil
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_7.jpg

Now there was some lengthy discussions on which Motul 100% fully synthetic oil to use - 300V vs 7100? 300V was a pure race spec oil which was thinner and hence provided enhanced performance but lower service life and slightly lower protection. Also it was not rated by JASO and had it's own Motul ratings which were equivalent/higher to JASO MA1. Also no other oil could be mixed into it, in case of any emergency. This oil was a double ester based product and was more suited for purely race track oriented bikes like the ZX10R. It costed Rs. 1150/- a litre
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_9.jpg

And then the main choice was made in favour of 7100. It was the official oil specified by Motul for the Ninja 1000. It was JASO MA2 (the latest) rated, 100% synthetic, single ester based product. It was thicker and had a longer service life, more protection for the engine, more safer for the catalytic convertor, was perfect for a pure touring bike purpose and other oils could be mixed into it in case of any emergency.
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_10.jpg

It's specifications
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_11.jpg

It was priced at Rs. 810/- per litre
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_12.jpg

3.8 Litres was used and charged

The oil being refilled. Notice the Red color.

The HSRP was also fitted to the bike. Also the chain was properly cleaned with kerosene and brush and then given a nice rinse. Finally it was lubed by Motul Chain Lube.
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_29.jpg

The bike finally ready for delivery after 1st service and wheel rims change.
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_30.jpg

Aurum Automobile, Delhi has also developed it's Service Van for outstation servicing of bikes and the owner assured me that my next service will be given at my doorstep at Meerut. Petrol charges for these vans are borne by IKM, Pune.
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_31.jpg

The final Spare Parts cost was Rs. 3,807.98
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_35.jpg

And the Total Bill for 1st Service was Rs. 4,869.98p. including labour charges of Rs. 1,062/- including GST. Quite reasonable I would say. IKM has now started charging for all services as per each work done. I did not undergo washing (Rs. 350/-+GST) as my bike would again get dirty by the time I reached Meerut. Also Air Filter Cleaning (Rs. 1400/-+GST) was not required in 1st service (and not specified in maintenance schedule for 1st service) as the service duration was too low. Many dealerships however unnecessarily carry out air filter cleaning on 1st service leading to inflated bills. So, wake up consumers...
2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review-ninja-1000-1st-service-794kms-16112017_36.jpg

Overall a quite pleasing experience contrary to all the news floating around about the 'dreaded' Kawasaki Service. Basically also depends upon how aware and proactive you are, otherwise the world is there to fleece you! Hope this clears the air.

Cheers...

Mighty impressive of the dealership to replace the alloys as good will warranty, or you were looking at an expense of close to 1.2 lacs. The alloys and assembly is pretty expensive.

It was a Goodwill Warranty Replacement by IKM, Pune and not the dealer, on my complaint directly to IKM as well as to the dealer. Though the dealer did help facilitate the process to my satisfaction. Again depends upon how proactive you are. And YES, IKM parts are darned costly but then so are any other big bike brands, whether Harley or Triumph etc.

Goodwill warranty replacements of over a lakh! Last time I heard of bend alloys was when 'IronH4WK' had this issue with the Ninja 650 and he was even denied insurance coverage (ICICI !!! (The Ninja & me - 2015 Kawasaki Ninja 650!)).

That is one of the reasons I don't believe in comprehensive insurance after the first year of any of my vehicles. These insurance companies are mostly useless and when you actually need them, they let you down. I deposit all the premium amount that I save from them in a separate fund which I keep as FD in case anything does go wrong with the 7-8 vehicles that I do own.

Cheers...

Re: 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 - The Comprehensive Review

Fantastic to know Dhiraj that IKM has replaced the entire rim as goodwill warranty. Simply unbelievable stuff !!

I have to also share that Kawasaki is really turned things around and gaining ground on their service and attitude front in a positive manner.

Hopefully, near future should come clean from their erstwhile bad service reputation. We too are seeing major change at our ASC as well so it's all good for us Kwackers
