Looked up a little more to understand what "Customizable seating position" meant and here is what i found on
Cycleworld. This sounds interesting and really will go a long way in making it one size fits all kinda bike. And that specifically includes all the ladies out there who want to ride but simply do not find something that works for them in terms of ergonomics!

I assume this is the same 650 cc engine that powers the Versys but tuned for better lower end torque. However , it is slightly surprising that the engine on the Vulcan has a lower power output than the one which is on the Versys.

And less torque than the Versys too.
But both the peak power and torque are produced at lower rpms. Peak power is produced significantly lower by about 1000 rpm earlier than in the Versys, where peak torque is produced 400 rpm earlier. Doesn't help that the Vulcan S is heavier too.
That said - It is a cheaper offering too. Prices in the US market are less than the new Ninja 650 ABS. So we could be expecting the Vulcan S to be priced straight against the 'made in India' Harley Davidson Street 750, if launched without accessories. Interesting battle here! Harley definitely has a better pedigree and would mostly remain unaffected. That said - Street 750 is not considered a pure Harley due to the characterless engine and has poor brakes - which might be the loophole Kawasaki must be targeting.
Would be interesting to see if they give the passenger seat. Passenger seat + Footpegs + back rest ends up as a $325 worth accessory in the US! Imagine asking INR 22500/- to an Indian customer just for carrying a pillion along! :uncontrol

There is a strong rumour going on that the Vulcan 650 S will be launched during Christmas this year. I didn't see any article pointing to a Jan 2018 launch either.
I am guessing the Vulcan S will be here sooner than expected.

I think we need to wait and get a feel of the state of tune to see if & how the torque curve is different from the other street / adv offerings using the same engine. One thing is for sure, the chopper like stance is going to make it stand out in the crowd from the Harleys / Triumphs. But like you said - we need to see how they manage to make it "double seat" friendly! The bobber look might turn away a few who simply like having the option of 2 seats by default though they may mostly always ride solo.
And until the Street Rod came, I totally agree that the Street 750 just didn't represent the Harley pedigree!
I saw in a review that the rear suspension was the same from Versys 650 and ER6n. If the suspension is well sorted out, this will be a super hit. I am loving the no plastic all metal look. Makes the occasional falls much easier to handle. Also being able to flat foot it under any circumstance is a great confidence booster.
I hope it will be two seater from stock.

Kawasaki Vulcan S Launched at Rs 5.44 lakh
The 650-cc Kawasaki Vulcan S was launched at a low-profile event, but will be unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo.
This is the first cruiser to launched by India Kawasaki Motor and gets an attractive price-tag since it is assembled in India at Kawasaki’s plant in Chakan, near Pune.
The cruiser is currently only available in one colour, Flat Ebony, and can be booked at Kawasaki showrooms across India. The Vulcan S will compete with the Harley-Davidson Street 750 and the upcoming Royal Enfield Interceptor.

Pricing is indeed good if with ABS.

ABS is standard as per the news articles from Autocar India, TOI and Zigwheels.
EDIT 1: Zigwheels reports that Vulcan S misses out on ABS. :Frustrati

As per inputs from Kawasaki Bangalore showroom
- Vulcan S comes with ABS !!!
- Will come with pillion seat as default.
- Bike will be available by Jan end
- Test drives will be available by Feb
- Booking is open & can be done for 50k
- On Road pricing not confirmed but something around 6.3-6.4

Something as important as ABS should find an explicit mention in the launch notification; it's a faux pas on the part of Kawasaki India.
That said, I'd be surprised if ABS is not there since it's public knowledge that ABS will be mandatory in India for all new vehicles sold from Apr 2018 onwards.
