I'm pretty sure they are.

Motorcycles are just one of the smaller items they can put pressure on. International relations with the US getting worse over such a small issue would not be something the Indian Government would want at this point.

Harley imports very less numbers into India as well. Forget Harley - premium bikes are themselves a very niche segment. Neither do they really contribute to the tax bottom line, nor do they hurt any of the Indian manufacturers.

No reason to keep such high CBU taxes only for some countries, atleast for 800cc and above. Or is there?

Trump today tweeted about this 50% one way taxation and said 'soon will start reciprocal tax'. Here's hoping a further reduction in CBU taxes and an open market for superbikes!

Re: Import duties on bikes revised, CBUs to cost less

I am planning to buy a Bonneville (pre-owned), as of now looking at pre-owned bikes. hope this tax change will impact the price? if it does, am sure will have a great impact on the pre-owned market as well.

Prices of Ducati's CBU bikes slashed by up to Rs.7.36 lakh

Ducati has announced a price cut on select completely built unit (CBU) models. The announcement comes in the wake of the recent revision in custom duty on CBU imports which was dropped from 75% to 50% on bikes with engine capacity greater 800 cc.

The Ducati Scrambler is imported from Thailand. Since India and Thailand have a Free Trade Agreement, the import duty is only 30% IIRC.

The revised prices are for motorcycles which are imported directly from Europe (earlier 75% import duty).

Re: Import duties on bikes revised, CBUs to cost less

I know this thread is focused on bike, but I can't help to mention that I see a loop hole. The commercial CBUs, trucks and buses are taxed only at 20%, all luxury lifestyle pickups will come under this category, off course as long as they are registered under yellow board. Does that mean a Mercedes X Class pickup @20% tax?

Quoting Trump "An Indian company sells a lot of motorcycles in the US".

I don't know which Indian company sells motorcycles in the US apart from Royal Enfield. And their sales are only around 1000 bikes an year.

Somebody tell him "Indian Motorcycles" is an American company.

Re: Import duties on bikes revised, CBUs to cost less

"US President Donald Trump admitted making up figures in a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to the Washington Post.

At a private fundraiser, he reportedly said he insisted to Mr Trudeau the US had a trade deficit with Canada, though he had "no idea" if it was true.

Mr Trump maintained in a tweet the US does have a trade deficit with Canada. But the US Department of Commerce says the US ran a $2.8bn (£2bn) trade surplus with Canada in 2017."

As expected Harley CKD's price hiked. From Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 70,000 depending on models.

Re: Import duties on bikes revised, CBUs to cost less

Customs duty on motorcycles with engine capacity over 800 cc will be raised up to 50 per cent[

Going by this news, it appears an increase in the duty from Imports from the USA. Certain models from Harley might get expensive. I don't think it's going to serve any purpose and given the past behaviour of Mr. President, this is not going to deter him. I won't be surprised if he instead retaliates in some other way and targets India elsewhere.

Yet another change in policy this year.

With all the uncertainty thats been happening recently - I wonder how these companies are taking any sort of decisions at all!
