Kawasaki to turn India into an export hub

According to a media report, Kawasaki is planning to turn India into an export hub to cater to markets in Africa and Latin America. The bike maker could also launch lower capacity bikes developed specifically for India.

Kawasaki is aiming to increase the annual output from its production facility in Maharashtra to about 10,000 units. The company also plans to localize more parts to make its products more competitive. The bike maker is evaluating models with an engine capacity of around 200 cc, which could be developed in India.

Expansion of the local dealer network is also on its agenda. Kawasaki aims to increase the number dealerships to 30 by the end of 2020 and hopes to sell around 5,000 bikes per year by that time.

Not a hard ask to increase the number of dealerships to 30. The current count is 29!

However- 5000 bikes per year is a very hard ask, and they need to try multiple times harder than the effort they have put in for a localized Ninja 300.

There is only one way for Kawasaki to achieve those numbers in India, and that is to take KTM head on. Much easier said than done because KTM rides on the volumes game played by Bajaj and is a very big export hub for them too.

Don't think they can compete with costs on 200cc segments. 250cc might be a much better starting point instead.

Kawasaki to Ramp Up Production in India

According to an article in Rideapart, Kawasaki is planning to ramp up production in India with an aim of rolling out 10,000 units a year.

Here's the article

This bodes well for the customer - more competition = better & maybe even cheaper (if they start local sourcing of components/ parts) products. This will force the homegrown motorcycle majors to match the competition in terms of refinement, power and quality, while giving a fillip to the local auto ancillaries industry.

Cheers !
