BMW has unveiled the replacement for the iconic big daddy of adventure motorcycles - the R1200GS. Meet the R 1250 GS -

Powered by a new 1254cc (Up from 1170cc) engine developing 136 hp at 7750 rpm, and 143 Nm at 6250 rpm (Up from 125hp, 125Nm). The highlight however is Variable Valve Timing - Shiftcam in BMW Speak.

With the extensively further advanced boxer engine, the new R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT not only achieve a whole new level of power and torque. It was also possible to significantly optimise refinement and running smoothness – especially within the lower engine speed range. What is more, the new engine offers improved emission and fuel consumption levels as well as a particularly satisfying sound. For this purpose, BMW ShiftCam Technology has been used for the first time in the serial production of BMW Motorrad engines: this enables variation of the valve timings and valve stroke on the intake side. In addition, the intake camshafts are designed for asynchronous opening of the two intake valves, resulting in enhanced swirl of the fresh, incoming mixture and therefore more effective combustion. Other technical changes to the engine relate to the camshaft drive – now taken care of by a toothed chain (previously a roller chain) – an optimised oil supply, twin-jet injection valves and a new exhaust system.

Powered by the same engine is also the new R 1250 RT - designed for more touring comfort.

This should be brilliant given its antecendents. A bump in cc, full color screen, brand new engine management system and that variable valve timing kind of system called shift cam.
Pretty much has everything to remain the queen of the hill. Come on KTM , bring that 1290 super ADV here already.

Bookings open for the R1250GS in India -

The German premium motorcycle manufacturer has not revealed a date yet but we have learnt that the R 1250 GS will reach dealerships in India this month. BMW Motorrad dealerships across the country have already started accepting booking for the 2019 BMW R 1250 GS wherein interested customers can book theirs for a token amount of up to Rs 5 lakh.

Got a chance to check the new GS and RT here in Canada last week, though could not ride due to weather. Those yellow Gold rims rims looks absolutely Stupid, hope they get regular black as well. Visually even after checking a while, I could not make any differences from the older ones. But heard it has better engine response from the guy who rode in Europe.

What is the advantage one gets in boxer engine, apart from the distinctive look on streets?
Doesn't the outward jutting engine pose a risk of burning the lower leg?
If the bike falls, then isn't there a chance of damaging the engine alignment?

One primary advantage I'm aware of - low center of gravity. The engine is placed as low as possible when compared to parallel twin, V twin, inline4 layouts.

Makes a difference on these tall adventure tourers, which are anyways happy to pull the rider down.

Correct, helps especially on these big bikes carrying 25-30 Ltr of Fuel in addition to the 200 Kg + Kerb Weight. BMW has pioneered these from very old days.

Now these bikes don't just have the Boxer engine but many also have something called - Telelever suspension. These bikes do not dive-in as others when you apply front breaks irrespective of speeds. Suspension setup on these bikes is totally unmatched and that's one reason this is one of the preferred bike for intercontinental trips. I will say these are more like Land Cruisers on 2 wheels and unlike BMW cars, very reliable

Not all all, the posture is rather very comfortable, one can easily do 300-400 km without a break.

It's not uncommon to get cylinder head or some other broken when you fall but there are engine protections which help in most cases. These are standard on GSA models and can be bought as accessories on GS and others.

Heard they are going to launch on 19th. Bikes are already at Dealerships and will be launched across dealerships same day. Both GS and GSA are available to order. GSA will be initially available in this beautiful exclusive color - Kalamata Metallic and GS in the White/ Racing blue.

Expected to be priced about 2-2,5 lac higher over the outgoing models will have standard LED instrument cluster.

Saw here in a motor show 2 days back and looked very nice under lights, at most places, we can spec it with Metzeler tyres but in India we will get more Road friendly tyres ( Dunlop unlike Michelin Anakee from previous)

It seems BMW has increased price for 1250 GS range exactly by one lakh from the 1200 GS range.

R 1250 GS Standard : Rs. 16.85 Lakh
R 1250 GSA Standard : Rs. 20.05 Lakh
