Re: BMW Motorrad unveils new cruiser, the R18. Edit: Launched at INR 18.90 Lakhs Got the opportunity to test ride the BMW R18 first edition at BMW EVM Autokraft at Trivandrum in January 2021. Have been drooling over this bike since the day the concept was unveiled and absolutely jumped at the opportunity when the showroom called up telling me that the R18 on its nation wide trip is coming to Trivandrum for test rides!
Have attached some pictures below from my ride. Although I can in no way afford the bike right now , I aspire to have it someday when I retire. Seems ideal to me for that. Some points I noted :
1) BEAUTIFUL. The bike is an absolute work of art and built to a very very high standard with very tasteful materials. Wouldn't be out of place in a museum without doubt.
2) The 1800cc Boxer twin is an absolute beast as expected. The way it violently rocks side to side on thumbing the starter was both scary and extremely exhilarating. Plenty of power at any RPM and any gear. It had two riding modes: 'Rock' and 'roll'. (!!)
3) The starter motor can be used for reversing the bike. a small lever is provided on the right side for activating this. Absolute necessity as the bike is very heavy and with the extremely limited steering lock a pain to reverse.
4) The exhausts are a work of art as well and sound beautiful.
5) Very upright and comfortable seating position. Foot pegs are centre set and my boots were hitting the Cylinder heads. Still have marks on my boots.
6) Extremely low centre of gravity as expected. You will not feel the weight at all while on the move. Although the cylinders do jut out quite a bit so tough to maneuvre in traffic. Also the heads would be the first things you will scrape while leaning the bike. Scary.
Not a practical bike at all but god is it beautiful. Still want one. |
