That is a very tempting proposition, CD! I would have taken it if I was in your shoes

We should have a south India TBHP motorcyclists meetup once this corona thing passes and its safe to travel, to discuss this and other issues once and for all !

These are two different segments altogether. The Honda is limited to A2 norms and hence will always compete with the KTM Adv 390 in the sub 48 HP space. The 490 will be half a segment or a full segment above it. I would guess 60 HP and given that the Adv 390 is almost at Rs 4 L, I would guess that the 490 would be around Rs 6 L on road.

For outright power, light weight, and offroad genes, with a full suite of toys and electronics onboard its the 490 twin. I am thinking 65-70 hp going by their track record of being able to extract the most hp from small engines. Might also be cheaper. Say 5 on road Bangalore.
Yes agreed Honda reliability is nothing to be scoffed at. For people who live on the road, I am sure that it makes a lot of sense. I can't help but wonder though, how many would pick Honda reliability and finish over one of the Katooms. They might test ride it for the fancy apple-esque gizmos, they'll walk away with it for the sheer fun to ride factor. It's not like Honda has made the most exciting mid weights for many years now. You'd probably be able to buy the Honda after the first couple of KTM engine rebuilds though....

Problem is that price wise the Honda will compete with 490 ADV while performance wise it sits somewhere between a souped up Himalayan and KTM 390. It would be better for straight line stability and definitely better on reliability but in the end, they will price themselves out. If KTMs price philosophy is maintained, I suspect that the 490 ADV will be 5.2+/- OTR Bangalore. If that happens, it is bye bye birdie for the Honda. Versys 650 and Suzuki VS will still offer good value for what they are, but might find themselves losing out to the smaller Austrian.

I was quite interested to see what the ex showroom price of the 490 Adv would be like if KTM went along the lines of what you and Red Liner predicted. I used this helpful post from shyamg28 (The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!) to baseline the numbers. I just dont think that the new 490 platform is going to get the volumes needed for KTM to go super aggressive on the pricing front globally or in India.

I am one of those optimistic folks who is hoping for Honda to right price the new 500 series so that the market becomes quite structured into different slabs. For every Rs 50,000 increase in pricing, we would find different offerings, each appealing in a very different way to our wallet.

I think this is how the market is going to play out, all prices on road.

- Rs 3 to 3.5 L : Royal Enfield 650 twins and KTM Duke 390 and KTM RC 390
- Rs 3.5 to 4 L : KTM Adv 390 and bigger Royal Enfield offroader
- Rs 4 to 4.5 L : Honda CB500F and Rebel
- Rs 4.5 to 5 L : Honda CB500X and CB500R
- Rs 5 to 5.5 L : KTM Duke 490 and RC 490
- Rs 5.5 to 6 L : KTM Adv 490

Back to the thread topic, the price increase of the Kawasaki 650s has actually cleared up a lot of space in the market for the new lower middleweights (both A2 and non A2) to come in and spice things up.

Just thinking further along your line...
- Rs 1 to 1.5 L : Hero XPulse 200
- Rs 1.5 to 2.5 L: Hero Xpulse 300, Dominar, Himalayan twins (410 + 250)
- Rs 2.5 to 3 L: KTM 250 Adventure

- Rs 3 to 3.5 L : Royal Enfield 650 twins and KTM Duke 390 and KTM RC 390
- Rs 3.5 to 4 L : KTM 390 Adv and bigger Royal Enfield offroader
- Rs 4 to 4.5 L : Honda CB500F and Rebel and KTM Duke 490 and RC 490
- Rs 4.5 to 5 L : KTM 490 Adv and Euro 5 BMW G310 GS
- Rs 5 to 5.5 L : KTM 490 ADV R
- Rs 5.5 to 6 L : Honda CB500X and CB500R and Versys 300x

This is actually a great discussion. Should this get its own Thread as the under 650 cc adventure and touring bike chat? Feather weight class Maybe CD can do the honours.

Re: BS6 Kawasaki Z650, Z900, Ninja 650, Ninja 1000 bookings open

As guessed earlier, Ninja 1000 earns the SX moniker too like in the US and launched at 10.79L ex-showroom. The motorcycle also gets all the bells and whistles as other markets.

Re: BS6 Kawasaki Z650, Z900, Ninja 650, Ninja 1000 bookings open

The new ninja 1000 bookings have started in Delhi, amazing pricing of 12.20/- lakhs OtR. With all the new bells and whistles, I am sure that they will Start giving discounts as well in a few months like they have done in the past.

Although the peak torque is correct as per Kawasaki India website, slightly surprising to see the peak torque for Ninja 1000 SX abroad is 7,500 rpm as per Visordown's review and 7,800 rpm as per ultimatemotorcycling's recent review.

Regardless, I hope this doesn't affect the real world performance too much. Would love to know some feedback on this from the existing Ninja 1000 owners who enjoy the peak torque much earlier in the power band.

That's fantastic OTR pricing which should only get better with the usual Kawasaki discounts that we are used to by now.

I'm a big fan of those dual exhausts on the old Ninja 1000 and it saddens me to see the single sided exhaust setup. But it looses out a good 4.4 pounds in the process so no complaints.

Re: BS6 Kawasaki Z650, Z900, Ninja 650, Ninja 1000 bookings open

Don't know about the 2020 bike but I ride a 2017 N1K and the torque is awesome. Allows you to literally ride the bike like an automatic on the highway, don't need to change gears at all most of the time.

On @dkaile's thread of N1K ownership there is some talk about the features and would people upgrade. I, personally, do not find it enticing enough. The only feature that I would like to have is the quick shifter.

TFT - Doesn't really matter to me - nice to have but can easily manage without it, Cruise - IMO waste in Indian road conditions, Riding modes - Same combo can be achieved using a combination of KTRC and F/L - not sure if there is any map changes in the riding modes other than the above, Rideology app - been hearing some bad reviews about it.

Re: BS6 Kawasaki Z650, Z900, Ninja 650, Ninja 1000 bookings open

With the original BS6 prices being revised for both the Ninja 650 and the Z650, I hope we can expect a cheaper price tag for the Z900 as well.

Not only has it become a brilliant all-round package with the added electronics and modern features - but it also sounds better in the new avatar!
