re: 2022 Ducati DesertX. Now launched at 17.9 lakhs

This bike looks pure dope. Simple and timeless design. 223kg kerb weight is on the higher side, hope it is low-slung and well balanced. 875mm seat height could be an issue and Ducati should provide a low seat option.

The optional rear tank and pillion seat to luggage rack conversion are smart options. Some more details of the bike are below:

- To be launched in the US around June 2022 at an MSRP of $16,795
- Regular service at 9,000 miles and valve clearance check at 18,000 miles
- front suspension has 230mm travel and the rear has 220mm

Way too heavy, way too tall. Looks cool though. Hope Ducati decide one day to make a 500cc bike. Something like this will sip too much fuel and worry me too much about repair costs to ever take off tarmac.

Any updates on this? Powerdrift seems set to demo it and I also saw it on overdrive or summat?2022 Ducati DesertX. Now launched at 17.9 lakhs-7593e8dab9434e8694e82a1583bfae46.jpeg

What a stunning stunning ride. And going by the western reviews it’s seems a seriously brilliant all-rounder. I mean it clearly (obviously) was going to be a rally and dirt slayer but people seem to be really amazed at how well it also handles on road.

Wonder how they’ll spec and price it here.

Thats exactly what I am looking for. A Dakar inspired 500cc motorcycle with the body line as the above will be an ultimate, usable motorcycle for Indian conditions. Litre class motorcycles are not usable to their full potential and as you rightly said will be too high on running cost and maintenance.

The DesertX made its debut at the Ducati World Premiere in December 2021. It is powered by a 937cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine that can also be found on the Multistrada V2. It churns out 108 BHP @ 9,250 rpm and 92 Nm @ 6,500 rpm.

The Ducati DesertX is an off-road-focused motorcycle. The bike rides on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wire-spoke wheels with 46 mm upside-down Kayaba fork suspension at the front and a Kayaba mono-shock at the rear. The fully adjustable suspension offers a ground clearance of 250 mm.

The DesertX is equipped with 6 riding modes, 4 power modes, engine brake control, traction control, wheelie control, cornering ABS and a bi-directional quick-shifter. The motorcycle is also fitted with full-LED lighting and a 5-inch TFT display.

Oof! That’s a couple of lakhs more than some of the most pessimistic speculators! Within striking distance of the base Tiger 1200. Well it’s a Duc I suppose… Hmmm….

re: 2022 Ducati DesertX. Now launched at 17.9 lakhs

Few points on the pricing (at least when compared to other bikes from the Ducati stable, specially Multi V2).

The price announced is the 2023 price. I am told that all Ducatis will see a 6% across the board hike in 2023. Current Multi V2 price is about 17.5L but if indeed it gets a 6% hike its 2023, that'll make it about 60k higher than the Desert X. That's kind of where I would expect the Desert X to sit vis a vis the V2 Multi.

CBU doesn't help matters either so expect an on road price tag, at least in MH and similar expensive CBU states, that's perilously close to the Tiger 1200 GT (although they are very different bikes in terms of the use case).

The closest competitors I feel are the 900 Rally Pro (RP) and the Africa Twin. I expect 2023 Hondas to also get some price hike at least in 2023 which will bring their price not too far from the Desert X. The 900 RP of course is relatively more VFM but then again, the Desert X does out spec both the Honda and the Triumph on the performance metrics.

I think at this price also the Desert X will have plenty takers, particularly Ducati loyalists who really haven't had this close a competitor from this stable for bikes like the Tiger and AT. Lets see how well the bike does next year.

Re: 2022 Ducati DesertX. Now launched at 17.9 lakhs

Ducati DesertX 18L vs

BMW 850 GS Adventure 13.25L
Tiger 900 Rally Pro 15.5L
Africa Twin MT 16L
Africa Twin DCT 17.5L
Tiger 1200 Rally Pro 20.2L

There is such a vast feature/cycle part disparity between the DesertX and these other bikes that it's 24L OTR price in MH is much ridiculous.

The Ducati DesertX has silly budget grade cycle parts and a lacklustre engine (lacklustre for its 24L price, decent in isolation) that I don't find it worth it's asking price.

For 24L OTR, a motorcycle better be special in every which way. A mere Ducati sticker here or there doesn't count.

This motorcycle is worth not more than 14-15L OTR if one looks at it objectively.

There is a questionable pride of possession in owning this motorcycle only to realize one doesn't get anything other than a 937cc parts bin chassis, (rough, unrefined) engine and (clunky false neutralish) transmission put together in Thailand (and not some exotic factory in Italy serving unlimited plates of tortellini).

While this may be harsh criticism of Ducati, one does not expect a budget-grade motorcycle from the brand at this price point.

This is one of the best reviews I came across of the Desert X. Worth a watch - trademark Ryan from Fortnine.

Here’s one particularly interesting screen grab from the above video.

Love his videos. He is one of the rare breeds which actually offers useful technical information in a simplest way for the viewers. The humour is equally good too.

That graph in the end sums it up for me what DesertX is. Unfortunately, a little overpriced in India but nowadays which big bike isn't?

This bike makes me go weak in the knees. Trust Ducati to make ugly ADVs look so gorgeous. I would buy this in a heartbeat if I had the money.

However here's reality for a large number of us who are very average riders with negligible skills on the dirt
