Riding Gear Updates: Track wear purchase

Shoutout: Big thanks to the friendly folks at 6kiom, Bangalore - Faiz and Navneeth for helping me out with this purchase. Faiz spent a good deal of time with me trying to explain how the fitment works and for checking the fitment for Furygan as well as RS Taichi. 100% recommended to try it out before ordering as the fitment for similar sizes on paper was completely different between the two brands. Thanks to Navneeth for sharing a ton of useful tips from his RACR trainer experience - valuable information for attending track days and also gear purchases. Overall - although this was my first purchase experience with 6kiom - highly recommend it based on my experience.

I was never into structured riding, after getting into big bikes directly from an old Pulsar 180 experience. 40k kms with 650cc machines have taught me to be more mature - but I haven't taken any formal learning sessions to improve my riding skills.

Which is something I'm hoping to do in 2024 and beyond. The focus, hopefully, will be to improve my skills rather than purchase more vehicles - with the garage looking very complete now.

As mentioned earlier - hopefully that target will get a booster start with California Superbike School. Now CSS allows for textile riding gear and also is very lenient as far as the participation conditions go - but I was persuaded by friends and family to play it safe and rent leathers before the event.

However, after speaking to multiple sources, I was not very convinced with the rentals. Different people had different negative experiences from self and friends, some of the common ones being:

1. Cleanliness - The suits are rarely cleaned thoroughly between sessions - just let out to dry! The one you are wearing could have endured a lot many sweaty sessions from other rides.
2. Damage penalty - Upon a crash or any damage sustained to the suit-. It could result in heavy repair penalties, in which case you pay a hefty price and don't even get the suit to keep.
3. Damage disqualification - Heard two cases were damage to the rental suit (like zip breaking off before the sessions) etc resulted in the riders getting disqualified from going on the track due to lack of safety concerns.

Moreover, I hope not to let CSS be a one-time thing and visit the track 3-4 times this year. Hence decided to purchase a riding suit. I had already considered purchasing another riding shoe because the Alpinestars Corosal boots that I have can't really be used on other bikes like the Street Triple 765RS etc and some of the smaller sportbikes like the RC390 and Ninja 400 that I am looking forward to riding soon. Hence this finally ended up becoming a full track gear purchase.

Track gear for a Tiger Sport 660 owner - what am I thinking? Well.. too late now! I might as well post it here so the compulsion of public credibility makes me keep me words on this!

Furygan Shifter Gloves

These are the full-gauntlet racing gloves from Furygan, claimed to be made of 100% goat leather on the abrasion points. I selected the black/white theme as with rest of the gear.

Forma Ice Pro Flow Racing Boots

Got these track ready boots as against my original choice - which was the Sport touring Forma Freccia boots. Opted for the black/white theme as with the gloves.

Finally coming to the big gun, the leather suit in itself. Some of the features mentioned include:
  • New T.I.P.S.(Taichi Impact Protection Slider) on shoulder and knee
  • T.R.A.D.(Taichi Racing Active Design) pattern
  • Approved CE level 2 protector on shoulder, elbow, and knee
  • Neck support on back to reduce damage caused by falls and support a neck, back and back of head.

Pictures shot during a short early morning coffee ride thanks to the holidays availed this week, to break in the new leathers. We took both the Triumphs (Tiger Sport 660 and Street Triple 765RS) out on the ride - but not documenting the ride as such because it was pretty uneventful.

But yes life is like that! Even our plan had to be completely dropped / re-booked in another direction due to the floods in Kanyakumari and the rising Covid concern at Kerala borders.
Just that my friend underwent a last-minute change of heart. Thereby jeopardizing my travel plans.

I’ll hit the roads soon, hopefully, before winter bids us goodbye!

Do look me up the next time you guys plan to meet up.

Those pictures are very droolworthy

Do you mind also sharing the cost of each of them please? Would help potential buyers plan their savings/investments for these

Also, any discounts offered since it's quite a big loot?

Congratulations!
You went for the "Street Hawk" look, or the dark theme! Expected a little lighter shades or some colors for visibility but then again at a track these doesn't really matter I suppose.

Looking forward to the Kari event in the new year! Hope you pick up some scuffs only on the sliders.

Happy testing,

Did not mention the costs because the discounts and prices keep varying. Either I or someone else will get disappointed in the prices are different than usual.

Will PM the prices - currently out on a ride and don't have the bills.

Thank you. Look was not intentional- I picked up what was available- if Furygan had worked for my sizing - that was cheaper and would have been a black&white scheme.

I doubt I can pick touch the sliders on a supersport ever, forget from the second floor seating of the Tiger Sport 660.

Ride Photolog:

Bangalore - Kohlapur - Ganpatipule - Goa - Hubli - Bangalore

Part 1/6

Thanks to KarthikK and csentil for coming up with this plan, and Karthik for taking care of the related route queries and bookings - and managing the last minute re-bookings and itinerary changes.

The original plan was to travel to Goa before the peak holidays hit, and take the coastal road from there all the way to Kanyakumari. However - all the planning and bookings went down the train in the last week due to two reasons - cyclone Michaung wrecking havoc in Kanyakumari and the concern of rising Covid numbers in Kerala causing disruptions in state borders.

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-img20231218wa0020.jpg

A last minute alternate plan had to be made - we decided to travel north instead of south. Goa had become extremely pricey for last minute bookings by then - so it made sense to minimize Goa and plan around it. As with most of the plans made by KarthikK - food is always a highlight and the center of attraction and was the case this time as well. The final plan made was:

Day 1:
Bangalore - Kohlapur
Enjoy delicious mutton thali meals

Day 2:
Kohlapur - Ganpatipule
Stay close to the beach and relax
Delicious seafood lunch
Relish on Maharashtrian veg thali for dinner
Modak for desserts

Day 3:
Ganpatipule - Goa
Enjoy traditional misal pav lunch

Day 4:
Relax 1.5 days in south Goa with relatively lesser crowds, spend time at the beach.
Enjoy seafood

Day 5:
Goa - Hubli
Relax and enjoy the in-house food options

Day 6:
Hubli - Bangalore

Three BHPian friends joined in for this ride - KarthikK and his better half on their Honda CB500X, ebmrajesh on the KTM 390 Adventure and csentil on the Royal Enfield Meteor 350

Started from home by 4:55 AM and reached the ParleG toll (the common meeting point) by 5:20AM. KarthikK was a bit late to the party this time and that delayed the group a bit - who all arrived 10 minutes later. Rajesh had plans to get the Ninja 1000, but the battery gave haath at the last minute - making him revert to the KTM 390 Adventure instead. It turned out to be a cold and foggy morning ride and we took a breather and had a cup of tea at the Tumkur toll:

Breakfast stop was planned at Davangere, for the famous Davangere benne masala dosa. In the interests of time, we skipped going inside the city to the more traditional places like Guru Kottureshwara Benne Dosa Hotel. Instead, we visited Apoorva resorts on the highway who make good quality dosa as well:

With batting done and stomach full of dosas, we are ready to roll once again:

It was a pretty uneventful ride from Davangere to Dharwad - with plain straight roads. Regrouped once again at the Hubli-Dharwad bypass toll gate:

Karthik can be seen scolding Rajesh and Senthil - Rajesh looks shocked and Senthil can be seen wiping his tears in fear! (PS: Not sure what the conversation actually was - but this caption does go with the image better! )

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20231221_110247.jpg

Most of the time it was the three ADVs riding together - not because the Royal Enfield was slow and behind us, but because he was faster and ahead of us!

As I have mentioned earlier elsewhere in the thread - him riding that Meteor 350 is a true eye opener for me. We even joke that he got a prototype motor instead of the regular production one! His bike can maintain 120kmph though it takes longer than the big bikes to get there - and his average speeds are generally higher than ours.

Taking a short break opposite the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belgavi:

The CB500X with the panniers and tailbox was the largest bike in this group - and gathered the most attention as well

Kudos to Mrs Karthik for taking up such long pillion rides and being the most enthusiastic traveller in the group:

Reached Hotel Opal, Kohlapur by around 3:50 PM. Hotel Opal was chosen for the food primarily- their famous thalis being the core reason for this stay:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-1698256694929.jpeg

However - a friend recommended to try the thali options at Dehati instead

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20231221_200610.jpg

To be frank - we found the whole Dehati experience to be average - the mutton and the veg. I loved the mutton kheema which was provided with the thali, but didn't find any of the other mutton dishes to be unique or particularly special. Even the sweets like Basundi were pretty unremarkable and the mashed texture is not what we expected for a traditional Basundi. Or is it?

Getting out of Dehati and walking into Opal for more desserts. Lol!

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20231221_210333.jpg

Found the desserts at Opal to be much more traditional and satisfying! We had Caramel Custard, Shrikhand, Aamrakhand and Basundi before calling it a night!

Great updates! Keep them coming, I believe the Forma boots will not be available now?

Want the motivation? I recommend a listen to the Bikers Radio Rodcast with Anand Dharmaraj. The way he lucidly describes his experiences at the track is life like, I want to take my Himmy to the track now. Didn’t even realise how the hour and 45 minutes passed! If Shumi was an inspiration, he’s the father of that inspiration.

I have not seen Karthik in person - but the difference in height and build is so jarring, it looks like the scene in Terminator - come with me if you want to live pops to mind immediately! With the all black riding gear and helmet he looks like quite the machine . I can only imagine how it looks in person!

Nice. That makes three Tiger Sports 660s on the forum that I know of! Good to see more people getting to enjoy this bike.

I'm sticking to IndianOil XP95 these days which is very easy to find even on tours, and is not too expensive compared to regular either. I guess regular petrol has been filled for only 10% of the running so far.

Rumour is that Forma will be difficult to source from January till the ISI regulations are sorted. But I doubt it will take long - and even otherwise- international brands like A* and TCX will be available through TVS and RE partnerships.

Karthik is strongly built and can totally manhandle even the Ninja 1000. Probably the only one I know who can reverse the Ninja out of most tricky situations without any external help.

Bangalore - Kohlapur - Ganpatipule - Goa - Hubli - Bangalore

Part 2/6

At Hotel Opal, Kohlapur - the day started with a nice Maharashtrian breakfast - Misal Pav, Batata Vada, Kanda Poha and Shira - with bread butter, tea/coffee and banana etc.

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20231222_080831.jpg

I quite enjoyed this breakfast - except I didn't quite understand that the Misal had to be had with the bread (apparently bread is used and not pav in these regions) that they had kept alongside. I basically had it like a soup - a nice soup nevertheless. Lol!

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20231222_081302.jpg

We were out on the road by around 10:05 AM - filled up XP95 at one of the bunks in the city and slowly made our way to the highways. Traffic was quite a handful inside the town, but reduced significantly once we hit the highway.

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-aatp5084.jpg

Day 2 was a relaxed day - just needing to cover ~150 kms between Kohlapur and Ganpatipule. We took it easy and took a few extra breathers and photo breaks.

Mrs Karthik taking a break from the pillion seat - an interesting perspective which we discussed later was that she prefers the pillion seat of the Ninja 1000 as compared to the CB500X. I would have assumed otherwise!

Progress was not so smooth through Amba ghat. There were grazing goats...

... and no roads at times that kept slowing us down. I was a bit cautious with the panniers and taking it easy through the rough stuff.

Some respite from the heat - sugar cane juice. Strangely - for a place known for sugarcane produce, we found very less sugarcane juice stalls along this route.

Back on the road, but in just another 30 mins - the Amba ghat reveals a good photo-opp location. The two debating where to stop, we quickly move ahead and stop at one of the clearings instead.

But I soon get tired of the heat - December is not supposed to be this hot. Or is it so in these regions? My base layer was getting drenched every time we stopped for some reason.

Reached Ganpatipule at around 2:15pm. Our destination for lunch was O'Nest O'Fish restaurant at Gaywadi beach

The place had a good variety of seafood. When asked for local fish catch - they listed three, and we ended up ordering one of each. Lol!

The vegetarians among us were not left behind as well- good food generally was the overall feedback. I guess we would have also finished a dozen Solkadhi glasses between us!

Post lunch, we headed for our place of stay - another nearby property by the same management - O'nest Nakshatra beach resort. Good clean rooms, though a bit cramped for space:

And seaview rooms are a bit of a stretch by any imagination. However, overall, not bad for the place and price during this vacation season - that too for a last minute booking!

After relaxing for an hour in the room, we went out to the beach to watch the sunset. Meanwhile, I see the tyres and reflect on the day of fun we had. These Michelins continue to impress further on every single ride - and has quite a lot of tread depth left at approximately 15k kms odd.

Why should panniers restrict some good old fun?

What is the engine oil consumption in your Tiger 660? With running, the engine oil level must have gone down, roughly how many kms did you run per 100ml of top up?
Thank you :-)

I haven't checked this way. Instead I went for a mid-term service and filled it up. Will check and revert.

How about you? What's the pattern you follow?

I am some 550 kms from dealer. I took the delivery and came back to my city Kanpur. I called Triumph technician for home (out station) service when the bike was around 850 kms. He came and serviced it. Oil & filter were duly changed. Engine Oil that was poured in was 3 litres.

After 3 or 4 days of service, some how, out of some instinct I checked oil level. I was surprised to see that oil level was below minimum mark. I asked dealer about it & they said we have filled 3 litres as per manual - however the manual says oil needed is 2.8 litres for oil & filter change. I was very worried as the bike was new & started doing my research on various Tiger 660 forums and found that many people are facing this oil issue. The manual says that 2.8 litres is needed for oil & filter change however in actual the bike takes around 3.4 litres.

I checked the oil level by the procedure given in manual - bike upright - both wheels on ground - let the engine run for 5 mins and cool it for 3 mins then check the oil level. You can give few rev's after 60 secs from engine start so that oil reaches all parts of engine. The dip stick should be totally screwed in for correct level. My bike took 400ml of oil to reach max level on dipstick - so total 3.4 litres. This exactly was the figure that I read on some forum. Confirmed.

Now, after this top up, I have ridden 3000kms - the ride was mostly on highways + Trip to Pokhara, Nepal which was a mix of highways and hills. I checked 2 days back - the oil level had gone down and had to top up some 100ml of oil. So in a run of 3000 kms, engine oil consumption is approx 100ml. Generally I do spirited ride.

On dipstick, min to max takes around 250 ml and that 1 diamond mark in between min to max corresponds to 50ml (by experience).

If you have not checked your bike's engine oil level then you should.

Hope it helps

Further, please check your latest bike service bill and see for how many litres of engine oil they have billed you.
