Photolog - Tirunelli (Wayanad) overnighter

- Part 2/3

Entering Kerala by noon:

The checkpost is representative because we would soon be stopped 3 times in the next 2-3 kilometers - first by the police at the border, then by Excise and lastly the famous Kerala MVD. While the police were more interested with the silencers (which initially they said was too loud and later realized both were stock silencers), excise wanted to know if there was liquor in my tail bag (but they didn't check it because we were visiting the temple - they did cross check the story by asking both of us seperately) and MVD wanted to see the PUC document because the Karnataka one isn't getting updated in vahan portal.

Anyways, with 3 stops and 30 minutes wasted in the noon heat - we stopped for a small break soon after. This small shop at the border served pineapple juice which was much needed to cool us down.

Kerala roads (except the highways, which are a drastic contrast!) have gotten better over the years and the roads to Tirunelli are just a rider's paradise - excellent surface and flowing curves. The blue skies and the greenery begged for a small photobreak:

Showing the Bug-eyed RS that the Tiger Sport can be bug-eyed too! Lol

Few shot with the riders:

First view of the Brahmagiri hill meant another photo stop!

The mountains forms a natural border between Kerala and Karnataka - with Wayanad on the Kerala side and Kodagu on the Karnataka side. There is a trekking route, which we decided to explore one of these days.

By ~1:30PM - we were at Tirunelli: Was a hot and sunny day in the afternoon when we arrived:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240921_142635.jpg

Accommodation was booked right outside the temple, quite literally! This small village is not used to two triple-cylinder motorcycles with riders in alien gear, and it did catch some attention for a while - but then the hotel had parking behind the premises where nobody would notice the bikes.

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240921_135244.jpg

Rooms were decent and spacious - last time we had stayed in the non-a/c rooms due to the others being booked out and it felt small and cramped in comparison.

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240921_143000.jpg

Forest view from the other side - too hot and sunny to do anything much outside, so we decided to have lunch and take some rest:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240921_140636.jpg

There are only two vegetarian hotel options available, and the one right below the hotel served simple veg meals:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240921_141538.jpg

What was meant to be a 30-min rest turned into a 1.5 hour nap! And by the time we were up, the weather had completely changed - it rained and there was a slight chill in the air, typical of hill stations. Time to visit the temple then!

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240921_165941.jpg

After spending a good hour at the temple, i came out to witness the sunset- which was one of the most beautiful I have witnessed ever. Didn't want to break the view by going back to collect the phone- hence by the time I collected the phone much later, the colours were gone!

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240921_182951.jpg

Although some renovation activities have changed the old charm of this temple, it still feels like a place from an older timeframe and beliefs, there are documented evidences of its 1000 year history!

The hotel where we stayed:

The other good option outside, run by KTDC. Looks better, but the reviews aren't good for the place. It is better to stay outside with homestays instead.

Many shops outside, as is typical with Kerala temples:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240921_184424.jpg

Post-dinner, we took a walk. Everything closes down after 9PM and the darkness really do bring the stars out. So much so that mobile phones were enough to capture the stars!

Photolog - Tirunelli (Wayanad) overnighter

- Part 3/3

Apparently, my friend woke up at 4:30 AM in the morning and went to the temple. I woke up much later, somewhere around 6AM and decided to take a stroll around the neighbourhood. Turned out to be an absolutely wonderful decision - as the early morning fresh air, the fog, the beautiful rural landscape with the view of the majestic Brahmigiri hills playing hide and seek with the rising sun - all were quite a sight to take in!

This being hilly terrain - most fields employed a step irrigation system to retain the water needed for paddy:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240922_070435.jpg

On one side - you have the beautiful, seemingly large paddy fields with a large blanket of fog over them:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240922_070914.jpg

And on the other side - the mighty Brahmagiri hills painted a picturesque landscape:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240922_070702.jpg

Shooting with a wide-angle just because I don't want to get off the road into the slush:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240922_072937.jpg

Once back at the hotel, breakfast was a simple, typical Kerala preperation of puttu + kadala curry, with tea - which, once again, I never remembered to click a picture of! Outside the hotel - there was vendors with temporary stalls selling hot bamboo rice payasam (kheer) - that made for an excellent local treat too!

During the onwards journey - I had some issue with the bags, which kept sliding forward ever so slightly whenever it could. So spent some time trying to figure out a better method - and this setup worked like a charm!

Out of Kerala and in the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve once again:

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240922_112810.jpg

Had a heart-in-the-mouth event with a run-in (quite literally!) with elephants.

I was coming around a corner, concentrating on the bad conditions of the roads - when a movement caught the periphery of my eyes the same time as my friend starting to shout on intercom "aaana... aaana (elephant)". Within a second of me noticing that there were a few of them in the forests slightly to the right and ahead of me - I realize that there is a large matriach in the bushes close to me. Before I could even process my response to this situation - the matriarch starts trumpeting and does a warning charge towards me, raising dust!

In hindsight - I suppose there may have been a calf in the group.

Brain didn't think much - just accelerated out of the situation in reflex before she could reach the road - but the next second I was staring at the mirrors wondering if she would turn around for the Street Triple. He was wondering whether to turn back in haste, but the matriach withdrew into the forest after having made her intentions clear with me, probably due to the additional sound of an approaching bus. With her at a safe distance and the rest of the family calmly walking back - he clicked this picture before moving on.

I later joked (PJ, i know!) on the intercom that elephants are known to be aggressive towards 'Tigers' , but this was not a comfortable situation (though not life threatening or anything as I still had distance between us!) and I would certainly be more wary of elephants while crossing forest areas in the future

PS: He so missed capturing this on video - that an Insta360 x4 has been quickly ordered!

Posing with the fake one, after being threatened by the real one:

Beautiful roads out of Nagarhole once again, leading back to H D Kote

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240922_114010.jpg

Short break at H D Kote before hitting the highways, same place as we stopped during the onward journey.

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-20240922_121617.jpg

The return from here was pretty ordinary and nothing much could top the elephant experience - so didn't click any pics afterwards. Was back home by around 6PM after dropping off his luggage at his place. He seems to have had an absolute blast with the 765 RS - so hoping to see more of the bike again in action as compared to the Honda!

Prospec Easy Ride ER 750

I had been planning to order this one for the last few months and had it wishlisted in the Amazon cart - but over a discussion during the last weekend ride, came to know that my friend had one sitting at home, unused. He had originally bought this for the Honda CB500X, but never used it as he changed his mind and opted for a Puig full sized visor instead.

So I decided to pick it up for a trial regardless of the spec- and turned out to be the exact same one I had shortlisted anyways. Installed the same yesterday and put 100kms on the clock today - first impressions are really good.

Pros:

+ Good noise reduction - never realized I had so much extra noise in the helmet that I could rid off - was feeling like ear got blocked while riding today. Took time to adjust to this new normal.
+ With the wind noise reduced - the sweet triple note from the engine is better audible - I'm liking it.
+ Can ride till highway speeds with the visor open - earlier I had to close it above 30-40kmph due to a lot of air and dusk getting picked up near the eyes. I really hate the hot feeling inside the helmet, so usually open the visor as soon as I get stuck in city traffic.
+ Not fully closed off - still getting a mild breeze which helps circulate the air near the helmet.
+ VFM / Made in India, as compared to expensive imported solutions.

Cons:

- Visible vibration on the visor - the Tiger Sport visor was always prone to vibrations, but had died down after I had the fairing brace installed. Now with the added weight and the resistance on top, the vibrations seem to have slightly increased. That said - i don't think it will be a cause for concern, but is noticeable nevertheless.
- Looks aftermarket'ish (I think I like this - looks purposeful!)

The fitment and longevity remains to be seen. Meanwhile, a few pics:

Absolutely. Fully enjoyable once you turn right from the main road at Kaattikulam.

Sorry I missed the part as I scroll the pics. Do they allow bikes inside Nagarhole reserve forest route? I once was denied couple of years back, I took HD Kote and Kabini route to come back to Bangalore.

Nice pics though. Please do add me for any Bangalore based bike rides

This was the H D Kote route itself - mostly the Nagarhole buffer zone.

Thank you. Sure

I rarely do organized group rides though - mostly its just last minute plans made with friends, some of them being BHPians.

Got mine too!

Finally, inspired by this awesome thread from CD sir, and after pestering him with many questions, I took delivery of my own red baby tiger!

One bike to tame them all! | Part - II | My Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Edit: 20,000 kms up!-mastani.png

[Note: Since this thread by CD sir is The One(TM) definitive thread on the Tiger 660 ownership experience, I will not commit the gustaakhi (crime) of starting a separate one.]

As of now I'm plugging away diligently at finishing the 1000 km running-in period at the recommended sedate pace, but I can't wait to hit the highways soon with her.

In terms of additions, so far I have only installed a radiator guard (unknown make, gifted by a friend), crash guards (SW Motech) and side stand extender (Sw Motech, another gift).

The purchasing experience with Shaman Triumph (Andheri), Mumbai, has been phenomenal from generous test rides to freewheeling discussions about all things biking. The sales advisor Ramin really made the process extremely engaging and smooth - I wish, as a Sales guy, I could learn his art of subtle, non-intrusive follow up, and gentle pursuasion!

As CD sir had mentioned in his kind reply to me, the heat is something I'm always aware of, but never bothered by - so that's one great relief. Road clearance is yet to be tested, but I will update for sure - have chosen NOT to get a sump guard until I have carefully traversed some of my usual ride routes. Will surely decide post that.

The height, though, continues to be a challenge (for me, at 168 cm), and any time I have to stop in a tricky situation I get tense - but I'm sure it will work out with practice. Riding in Mumbai traffic (WEH, for those familiar with Mumbai) has not posed any particular challenges, so far.

I'm going to do some research into the windscreen brace that has been talked about in this thread, since the vibration / movement of the windscreen and console is extremely apparent - it looks like it is just about ready to fall off if I hit a bad enough pothole! Other than that and some luggage solutions no further additions planned as of now. Really looking forward to enjoying riding this amazing machine.

PS - Wife has decided to name her "Mastani" since I still have retained my old faithful "Kashi" Honda H'ness (movie reference). I, however, am no Bajirao for sure, and hence have promptly put up a classified on TBHP to seek worthy suitors for my Kashi.

Thank you once again to TBHP and CD sir for making me feel like I already knew my Mastani for years, before I even saw her! :-)

Cheers,
R_S

I am not able to find the links for the RAW Performance product anymore, which was a copy of the Puig brace and made in India.

Here is the original Puig - https://puig.tv/en/tuning-motos/wind...cement-support

Is there a considerable airflow through the gap? wouldn't it make more sense to position it behind the stock windscreen? (I have no idea about the aerodynamics)

A small review on the helmet would be helpful. Specifically regarding the wind noise and airflow.

Congratulations roadie_swift! A lovely choice. I have test ridden Tiger 660 once and it was such a blast. A very nimble bike with no top heavy feel (as compared to my ex-bike).
Why no more pics?

My height is similar to yours and my bike's seat height is 830 mm as well. Try fiddling with the rear pre-load setting so as to make your self comfortable. Also, with these bikes, try to be in riding shoes always. It will protect you from heat and give those extra cms to balance bike more confidently.

Above was just my 2 paise buddy! Do enjoy the lovely triple and ride safe!

Someone like KarthikK or neil.jericho might be able to do a far better job of this. Will tag them to reply.

I lack one critical aspect needed to review helmets - exposure. I have used only three helmets over the last decade- MT Revenge, MT Thunder 3 SV and this Shoei GT Air II.

Feels like not too long ago (but actually it was a similar time last year) that we did a photoshoot ride to Markonahalli hills for KarthikK's lime green Kawasaki Ninja 400.

From last year -

As many of you who follow his updates would know by now - the Ninja 400 ownership report never came out and the bike has been replaced by a proper liter class supersport - the Kawasaki ZX-10R.

Although it's been more than a month since the upgrade happened - we finally did a short photoshoot ride today to Nandi backhills, one of my usual spots. The place was not as usual today though - due to a lot of grass growth post the rains and some construction activity on the other side, but we made the best of the situation as much as we could.

Back for a photoshoot with the limegreen monster-

Soon my friend joined with the Street Triple 765RS-
